Anyone got tips for soloing Survival? I'm managing to get to the DZ but then I just get trounced by NPC's
Long post of my experiences inc...
At the start, if you're on the east side, head towards the streets to the east of the lower levels of the DZ. There are a lot of buildings with loot there and usually only a few red or purple enemies. Try to get to the DZ fairly quickly, since even the red enemies there can drop purple gear/weapons. If you're on the west side or the south, then I find it is harder but head to the areas near the DZ and into sewers/subways. Just avoid going too far north on the streets that run north/south next to the DZ walls since there are usually yellow enemies patrolling there. In the DZ, pick your fights and don't go for landmarks unless you're well geared or have a spot where you can cheese the enemies. Don't bother going to the higher DZ zones unless you are going to divtech spots, or have to in order to get your virus samples though if they are at the regular DZ6 rooftop extraction, its hard. I've heard that you can extract without the samples, though I've never done it and you might need to wait for someone else to call an extraction.
I try to get at least all blue before I go into the DZ, and hopefully lucky with some purples, esp weapons from chests. You only need -17C clothes to be warm in the DZ and I've finished it before with -15C clothes. I find LMGs to be the best and I mostly use the M60, and then whatever else I can find or craft, usually a sniper rifle. My experience is that SMGs and shotguns are mostly crap in the DZ, though okay outside, since you likely won't have the toughness or talents to run and gun and enemies love flanking, but AR's and sniper rifles are pretty good. Don't waste your time with gear with electronics, except maybe if it has armor or you actually have a useful talent like Predatory. You want lots of stamina and some firearms. So make sure to check your stats, and sometimes a higher level gear item will be worse. Don't forget to craft the extra medkit pouch, and the advanced filter is useful since there is usually good loot/divtech in contaminated areas, which you can use to craft yellow gear/weapons and also turn into yellow mats if you have enough. If you have enough mats, gear and weapon mods are useful too. Always use medicine/pills as soon as you get them, use water/soda liberally and eat food or head to a safehouse to regen health rather than use a medkit after a fight.
As for skills, I use the turret, which is excellent for taunting enemies and showing you where they are with the red line. It can also do some decent damage to red/purple enemies. Just be aware that heavies will run up and kick the shit out of it, so if you use it then drop it somewhere they can't get on top of. I use the support station for heals, since I don't find first aid heals enough or has a short enough cooldown to be worth it. If you do use the station, remember to destroy it right away if you have to retreat out of it, since the cooldown only starts when its dead.
Be sure to prepare for extraction properly. The helicopter takes about 3 minutes to arrive, so make sure you have enough time/medicine. Also, ime, you can't even open your inventory while the Hunter is around. There are probably two 'best' strategies for fighting Hunters: get fairly close and burst damage the Hunter down quickly, and snipe/MG him down at range. I don't like the risk of getting close right away, since Hunters have random abilities and weapons and move a lot. Plus, their melee attack is a one-shot. I always extract at the park, since I have a solid strategy there that has never failed me. I shoot my flare on the east side and immediately head towards the eastern double-story building, dropping my turret before I get disrupted. I go upstairs and to the balcony where I find it is easier to fight the hunter since a lot of their skills can't reach. I usually just cut him down with sustained MG fire. I find using grenades against the Hunter to be a mixed bag. Hunters dodge very well most of the time, but if you can hit him with a shock grenade, then you can probably kill him before he can heal. Their heals are also limited to about 4 I think, though they may also have healing skills.
Importantly, other people may come and that can lead to more Hunters spawning. After you kill your Hunter, you can run down to grab the loot the Hunter dropped and then hide in the buildings again until the chopper is almost there. I don't play PVP Survival so I'm not sure about that side of things, though I imagine that will be like the regular DZ.
As you play solo, you'll learn what gear level is effective for what enemies, where the enemies tend to be, how they tend to react and so what positioning is best, where loot/divtech is, where the easier landmarks are, etc... Other people swear by the shield, using pulse, extracting at DZ2, getting to -17C and rushing DZ without worrying about gear, so you'll have to find whatever works for your playstyle. I spent a long time soloing in the DZ pre-1.4, and I've developed a rather conservative playstyle that works for me in Survival too. So far, my highest score has been about 15600. Hopefully something here will be helpful to you.
