Tom Henderson - EXCLUSIVE - PlayStation 6 is Planned to Have a Detachable Disc Drive on Launch

I support this mainly because it makes the system easier to repair. If your disc drive went out in the OG PS5 you had to send the entire system back, have all the shit wiped on your SSD, and wait for them to ship it back to you.

At least with this you can play digital games while waiting on another disc drive.

I'm just relieved for the physical bros. It was a non-zero chance it wasn't going to have one at all.

But this means it is literally the last gen for physical. It's already very low numbers compared to digital. Imagine how low it's going to be when you have to opt-in, and spend extra money. We're talking less than 10% are going to be physical. I doubt physical games last until the end of PS6 for anything but the most mainstream stuff, or Limited Run Games boutique runs.

It's going to be less than 5% if they launch a handheld also, and digital is required to use any games.

Who knows

PS6 could last for decades

Who will be left unsatisfied with the graphics to warrant a PS7?

Physical game sales keep geeting replaced by digital sales and addons. By the time PS6 gets replaced will be almost zero.

So I think that the SKU with disc drive integrated won't exist, and I think that if Sony makes a detachable disc will be mostly or exclusively for BC and movies.

Imagine thinking its a mockup and it turns out it was the real deal
Well, very likely PS6 is still 2+ years away from release. Meaning, they now are starting to complete its hardware specs but still not final ones. So very likely Sony still doesn't know how it's going to look like because key hardware that it will have still doesn't exist, so don't know exact sizes, cooling system needed, etc.

I'm good with it. I just hope blue ray disc have the full game in it instead using the internet to download most of the games like Western Games (Indiana Jones, etc)

Of course it will have a detachable drive, stardard features are paid extras now and you should be thankful and if you don't like it there's that sweet digital version waiting for you.
Did we already say our prices on PSN are shit and stay shit? Yeah you're welcome, suckers.

I would like to remove the PS3 disks from my collection. I only have a few left. Uncharted 1-3, A bunch of Ratchet and Clank games, Motorstorm, Dead Island, One of the One Piece games.
If the PS3 disk has a digital version I got it.
Really wishing they would release these old PS3 games on my PC. Digital me.

Ikr, some of the comments already are advocating for digital only.

Does the fact that being digital only mean you are at the mercy of one single source to purchase games where you already now pay top price. Like WTF.

PC gaming is digital only, but there are so many places to buy games and CD keys for a decent chunk less than full price from brand new games.

Sony, MS and Nintendo have their customers by the balls.

MS customers are going to be multistore as well.

Personally, I'm not advocating for digital only. I'm just stating how I think it is. I do think one of these days people will find out that their stuff isn't carrying forward, and might have regrets. So my posts are always about telling the truth as I see it, bluntly, so people can decide what they want to do.

It's a good news. One generation more of physical games, possibility to attach it to the handheld dock, easier to prepare, and loy one SKU to produce (well, two, handheld and main one).

I was told physical media is dead? Fortunately while one company goes balls deep all digital there's two companies still supporting it.
This is Sony delivering the death blow to physical media. Some people just don't see it yet. At the very least, it'll give a lifeline for people for their BC libraries.

Do we know global splits for digital versus disk drive ps5?

We have the Japan numbers.....

  • PS5: 4,915 (total 5,749,227)
  • PS5 DE: 952 (total 985,382)
  • PS5 Pro: 2,437 (total 243,633)

Next thing will be the PS6 uses the Dual Sense, so on launch it will be just the digital console. Curious if that disc drive will be the same as the current removable drive?

What's the point? If it isn't the default hardly anyone is going to make physical versions of games anyway.

Only reason I can see is backwards compatability.

Nice, you get to pay 700, instead of 800 for the disc drive included, or wait 3 years and pay 800 instead of 900 when they decide to jack up the prices on a whim...

Oh you thought after the current ps5 with optional disk drive ps6 would go back to all units having disk drives?

Actually I seem to remember a lot of people claiming ps5 would be last of the disk drive units and ps6 was going to be all digital....

If they launch a handheld, no one in Japan will buy a physical game on PS again.

Who is to say that they won't offer some sort of game key card solution for the handheld? It would be minimal manufacturing costs and Sony could even offer a detachable game key card reader for the main console so that the games work there too.

This is pretty much what I expected. I think most people expected exactly this.

That is an interesting idea. If people buying discs really can only play at best 1 game loaded on their PS6 at a time if they want to use the handheld, with the disc in the tray, it'll be brutal. Buying physical basically means you get 1 copy of the game instead of 2.

Options is never a bad thing
Yes, but if so few people have a disc drive there won't be many publishers making physical games, so the option becomes pointless.

It's like buying a VR headset to play all new AAA games in VR mode. Hardly anyone has the VR set, so hardly anyone makes big budget VR games or bothers adding VR modes to their games.

What do you mean? The base PS5 has a disc drive built in and makes up the vast majority of PS5s on the market.

Sony stopped making the built-in (not attachable) disc drive version when the slim released. I imagine PS6 will do the same. Sony has had trouble keeping up with demand for the attachable disc drive.

Option for me is never pointless as I still enjoy older titles as I have a nice library of discs (which you already brought up BC) and I will always buy the disc version of a game when I can

I actually enjoy owning my games and being able to play offline if I need or just want to

Which raises the question will this current odd looking disc drive work moving forward or is Sony going to try and keep up making 2 skus of disc drives?
