I've always wanted to check her out ever since I listened to her duet with Maynard and heard how well of an artist she was. I orginally borrowed (from the library, yeah) Scarlet's Walk and for whatever reason couldn't get into it. Although I didn't give it that much of a listen. So, a few weeks ago I pick up this:

I figure a greatest hits would be appropriate to get into an artist. I really dig some of these songs. "Precious Things," "Angels," "Crucify" and "Silent All These Years" are fantastic. There's some weak tracks too: the a capella song is kind of weird to have on a collection of songs album. I have to listen to it more but have to say the songs that I do like are really awesome. Anyone have any recommendations as to what albums are must haves? What are some of your favorite songs?

She is awesome. The first albums were the best.
Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink and Boys for Pele are my favourites.

If by "Tori Amos is phat" you mean that "Tori Amos is an insufferable shrill prat-eater that hasn't written a song of note since 1996., and is ugly, and fat, and unlistenable" then I have to agree.

Oh, I also hope she gets hit by a bus of Tori pie-wagon gals whose only redeeming quality is that they may eventually move on to listening to something less turgid and overwrought. She is a pox upon the singer-songwriter tradition, and is ugly.

The end. End of discussion. Next please.

goddamit, Griese!
her duet with maynard is so very, very beautiful. that is the best example i've ever heard of hearing just how pure Maynard's voice is. the mp3 of that still gives me chills today.

What's the deal with Ani Difranco? As far as I can tell, she's made a career out of pretending to be a lesbian or something. And her music? I've heard Skrewdriver songs that were less offensive.

That kind of bitterness can only come from a man who has had an ex-girlfriend who was a Tori fan.
:lol

My favorite Tori pic is where she is nursing a pig on the inside of one of her CD covers (Boys for Pele).

saw tori amos on may 15 at perth concert hall - awesome :D
she hadn't been to australia for 11 years beforehand..hopefully won't be that long again

scarlet's walk (the album) is pretty awesome, same as 'to venus and back' and 'from the choirgirl hotel' ... i generally prefer her newer stuff..

some other awesome songs are datura, spring haze, cruel, black dove, tear in your hand, past the mission (trent reznor sings backup) , beauty queen/horses... too many to list ;P

edit : if you wanna sample some of this stuff before grabbing all the albums there's a massive archive of recorded live performances (concert and also studio radio performances) here.

Her fans are insufferable, with only Queen Amos herself being more pretentious and flakey. You could combine her with Maynard and Billy Corgan to build the ultimate mega-robot of horrifyingly over-worshipped late 90's alternative acts (Reznor sez: "And I'll form the head!").

That said, her first two albums are great at least (there's a reason why the greatest hits CD leans pretty heavily on them). After that there are some good songs amidst a lot of droning and mostly self-indulgent claptrap. She sucks now live, too.....or at least she's not good enough to warrant putting up with a music hall full of her adorers.

you can't exactly blame an artist for their fans though :p all bands have insufferable know-it-all and obnoxious fans (seeing her recently i was fearing the hordes of teenage fairy-wing wearing freaks... but they were nowhere to be seen - in fact the audience was quite an older lot..) i think i'm actually drawn to pretentious claptrap as you put it - cos those artists you mentioned are some of my favourites :lol nothing like a bit of overblown drama on cd!!

I'm having flashbacks to junior high when I pretended to like Tori Amos so a girl would go out with me. Good times.

From the Choirgirl Hotel is super awesome, but Scarlet's Walk has 2 good songs, and The Beekeeper has 2 fewer than that. Oh mighty 90s acts, how you have fallen.

Who the hell is "Maynard," though?

I guarantee you most lesbians/feminists like her because she was raped and able to make something of herself. Thats what I get from anyone who actually listens to her music. Like they are using Tori Amos as a tool to make men sleep less at night.

Her shit is awful but then again, I don't like the post alternative crap.

This man is correct.

I would also add that Little Earthquakes is generally an enjoyable album.

How can someone who's "Little Earthquake's" was released in 1992, be considered "post" alternative?

If you can't appreciate her early music, then you have other issues going on.

I don't know anything about her and I'm not a lesbian/feminist; I just like some of this music a real lot. I forgot to mention how awesome "Winter" and "God" are.

I liked Cars & Guitars on the last one.

Though I like the first few CDs a lot, I tend to like Tori more when her songs get more ornate and weird... From the Choirgirl Hotel is very good, as is the disc of new stuff on that Venus cd.

Nowadays she's just some kinda bland easy listening though... It's a bit of a shame. She should get raped again or lose another baby to save her career.

Tori Amos - nothing but a Kate Bush wannabe. Hated her since Little Earthquakes.
Sinead, Fiona Apple or Tori - who's more like nails scratching on a board?

Well, I just lumped them all together because many post alternative acts sound the same. Kind of the same depressed feeling without the grunge aspects. I'm just not a fan of her type of music. That is fine if you do.

I don't know anything about her and I'm not a lesbian/feminist

I didn't say anyone who listened to her was a lesbian/feminist. I said most lesbian/feminists listen to her because she was raped.

I think she put out a record last year sometime. I really like her too going all the way back to 10,000 Maniacs, but she really doesn't do the type of music that will get radio play.

That's idiotic. There's other female musicians and actors that have been raped, but don't have a very big lesbian/feminist following.
