Toronto-Age |OT3| Going Off the Rails on a Gravy Train

Fuzzy

I would bang a hot farmer!
I had a great time at work today. Monday the foreman told my work partner what he wanted done when I wasn't there. My partner told me and it didn't make sense so I told him what I thought we should do instead but he wouldn't listen to me because he's 30 years older than me which means I'm a moron. Today the foreman came by and saw that it wasn't done the way he wanted and explained exactly what he wanted and it was what I said word for word. I told the foreman I wished he had told me from the start and when he was about to say he did, he remembered he told my partner. Fuck that guy. :lol

Another funny story from today. When we have to take time off of work to go to trade school we go on EI for the 8-10 weeks while we're in school. An apprentice who started school last week found out he was 16 hours short of qualifying for EI so that means he won't be getting anything. The best part is that for the 4 weeks before going to school he missed 1 day each week for no reason other than he didn't feel like going to work that day. Fucking idiot. :lol

Lee's Palace is certainly a Toronto institution. The artwork was done by this guy:

I was very relieved when they hired the same guy to do a new mural when they renovated the place a few years ago.

So the province is refusing to give Toronto a special deal on the casino which seems like the perfect way for everyone (except the casinos) to back away from the whole thing with their head held high. Casino opponents win. Wynne gets to project the image that she's not Toronto-centric (and Hudak and Howarth certainly aren't going to oppose her on this) and Ford gets to act righteous and angry that Toronto isn't getting a better deal on casino kickbacks.

Which is fine by me because the casino was an absurd idea. Old people can continue taking the bus to Rama.

I haven't gone to the Toronto Reference Library in 2 years. On my last visit I was terrorized and traumatized; being farted on while I'm just chilling.

*weeps*

I should sue them.

Yeah seriously that's something I've noticed. Why do so many people go to the library to fart?

Where are my Taro's Fish opinion posts? I just ordered a party tray from them. Damn good!

OH! My bad. I forgot to post back.

Yes. It was really, really good. The fish really stood out. Incredibly fresh. Definitely going there from now exclusively since I live close.

I still have to try Sushi Kaji.

Good day for me, got an internship at a really interesting company. Start on Apr 1st, and they'll let me know within 1 1/2 months if they want me permanent. Looks like I'm going to work my balls off for the next 1 1/2 months.

You motherfucker! >=[
Edit: Mikado is more or less on the same level and it's a proper sit down place. After Mikado, you'd be looking at places with one Japanese chef who can offer a good omakase (up to the chef's choice) like Hiro Sushi and a few others. Then we get into the crazy places for diplomats like Kaiseki and Kaji.

Hmmm...GAF meet up within the next 1 1/2 month. Gonna get you drunk, boyo.

Can you give us any details? How'd you get it? What do you do?

hehe :D

Is Kaiseki the one that costs a good 200-300?

April 19th to be exact. We shall get him fired!

Old news but haven't seen it posted in this thread.

Toronto Region Board of Trade came up with a list of ideas it wants implemented to fund the 25 years in $50 billion in transit expansion projects of the Big Move.

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/tra...ld_transit_recommended_by_business_group.html

The Ontario NDP rejected the proposal on grounds that they want to see corporate tax loopholes closed before they agree to any non-corporate taxes, and that the plan puts to much strain on residents and not enough on corporations.

It's up to Metrolinx's report that will come in June to include revenue tools that the NDP can agree with, because the PCs are going to say no to any tax increases.

And in more recent news, Ford wants the money that will be coming from the Feds in the 2013 budget to be spent on the Sheppard Subway rather than the Downtown Relief Line. Thankfully, nobody agrees with him.

Company is Called OnMedia (startup), I just saw a job posting and went for it - my contract in my current job is running up soon, and there was a chance they'd renew it for a year but... I really didn't want the job. I mean, it was a decent job and paid well but it went from being 3/10 technical to 1/10 technical - which isn't good enough for me when I really want some development experience.

The position is for a Database dev - they're growing like cray and have spent the last few months hiring, they got some new Senior developers but of course they also need juniors.

The company itself is really interesting, and the culture is very appealing.

High occupancy tolls?! City may revolt!

It's an interesting concept and I'm curious as to how it would be enforced. But, ultimately, it's not enough on its own. A parking levy would be another disincentive to drive into the city, but parking's already so expensive, it could well be we're on the verge of pricing drivers out of the market, and we don't have the transit capacity to take on former-drivers if they do switch.

Taxing business' parking spaces also puts a heavier burden on businesses than it does on consumers, and in Toronto, we already ask more of our businesses than we do our residents. So, that's not really fair.

Gas tax is an option, but over time revenues will diminish from that, as more people transition to high-fuel-efficiency vehicles or ones that don't require gasoline to run - or switch to transit altogether. It's an effective mid-term solution, though.

Which leaves a sales tax. Prices in Toronto are already higher than they are outside the GTA, but, ultimately, it may be the only way to go. As much as we don't want to punish consumption through taxation (rather, encourage it by virtue of having more and better ways to get here!), it's probably the most stable, long-term solution.

I think you'll need a transponder like on the 407, which you use to tell how many people are in your car, and then you'll be charged the appropriate rate.

The taxes and the parking are for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, and will probably include the Niagara Region, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph and Barrie as well (areas served by GO transit), so I don't imagine anyone driving out of the region to avoid these charges, except in the fringes. And there aren't many people from outside driving into the region in the first place so I question whether the loss in drivers to other regions will be that much.

I think you have a point about the gas taxes though. In Vancouver where Translink gets a lot of its revenue from gas taxes, a gas tax increase has actually resulted in less revenue as people buy more fuel efficient cars. I guess that is in our long-term interest but it seems to be a very stick rather than carrot approach to getting people off their cars, which hurts the poor more than the people who can afford it.

Does anyone know of a place likes Snakes and Latte's that's not too far from a subway station? I'd like to go to Snakes and Latte but the line up there, if I leave my house now, will be insane. >__>

Had an opportunity to check out that Game-On exhibit at the Science Centre earlier today and it's fucking amazing. Nice range of older consoles and newer stuff, all playable and enjoyable. Hell, they even had Johann Sebastian Joust, ten-player Saturn Bomberman and tons more. Me and my buddy just went wild with everything, especially that NBA Jam TE cabinet. Simply amazing.

Thanks to whoever recommended it in here a while ago. Everyone in TO-GAF needs to make the trek over there at some point to experience it.
