Toronto-Age |OT3| Going Off the Rails on a Gravy Train

How could it legitimately cost $30 per trip?

If you take a charter bus to the airport from downtown they charge about the same price. So I think it's them getting as much as they can while not upsetting the other options. This has the added bonus of paying off the line at an accelerated rate. The downside is that customers get screwed.

The express bus shuttle takes $26 (one way) right now.
And leaving a little earlier to take the Airport Rocket for $3 is sounding better and better.

It really was a different city back then. But Toronto has even changed quite a bit in the last decade. We'll have 'around' 44 highrises exceeding 150 metres in 2015, up from 13 in 2005. That's amazing growth. Stunning really.

Toronto has certainly bucked the worldwide economic trends. The level of construction in Toronto is much, much greater than places like New York.
It's all very exciting but the infrastructure needs to be built now to sustain all of this instead of waiting til it's way too late and then scrambling to catch up. (or are we already there?)

Pretty sure Toronto hasn't had enough infrastructure for its population since the the 70s population spike. Just imagine the roads around here in 2050 if transit expansion continues to expand at a snails pace. And those 50 student first grade classrooms should be fun. Gulp.

A lot of cities place a premium on their rail transit to the airport and rip people off. Even taking a bus down from the north bay to SFO is about $30. As with BlogTO's comparison, one of the discounted Amtrak fares could land you in LA for a similar price.

Shuttles and buses will still be available, but of course, most people will shell out for the train because it's easier. We're not the first city to be taken advantage of like this. But of course we wouldn't be so lucky as to avoid it. Too bad the Eglinton LRT was cut short in the new 'Transit City'. I'd take having to transfer at Eglinton West and saving $27.

I remember when I last took the train from Gatwick Airport to Central London, it cost me 17 pounds. I don't know what that is in Canadian dollars but I remember thinking it was kind of expensive.
(just checked.. it's $26.. so yeah, $30 is ridiculous)

I just think our leaders are incredibly bad at decision making, which leads to such user fees. It's a common trend in Toronto, unfortunately.

I was using Viva the other day and my Presto card (unsurprisingly) died on me when I went to tap. Third card this has happened to. I was late for work so I decided to get on the bus anyway since I always pay the fare. As I sit down the enforcer approaches me and tries to validate my card, which obviously doesn't work. I was told to get off and try it again when the next bus arrived. Fortunately he spared me the fine.

I really need to vent.

My school usually holds exams in a huge convention centre with around 2,000 students in the same room at a given time. Today was my last exam and I had it in there. They have this rule where you have to put your coat and bags in the front. So I did. after my exam, I went to get my coat only to find out some fucking piece of shit, half-witted, scum took my coat. I checked and rechecked, but I still couldn't find my coat. I check different spots, walked all around the place... nothing. I talked to a security guard and he said to just "chill around here until the exam is over." What... so wait around for another 2 fucking hours while you do nothing?! I talked to another guy and he took a report, but told me that I was pretty much shit out of luck. This is the 4th incident today. People walk in without a coat and then walk out with one. There goes my $500 dollar jacket. I had to walk to the bank in the cold to get money for public transit, and then walk home in the cold after getting off my train. I was so fucking pissed... still am. I actually felt like stabbing them with a pen if I found the person.

Whoever stole my coat, I hope you die a slow and painful death you fucking piece of shit.

Now I have to spend money to get myself another coat. I sure as hell am not spending that much again.

FUCK YOU. FUCK THE SCHOOL POLICY. FUCK MYSELF FOR NOT KNOWING THERE WAS A COAT CHECK BEFORE THE EXAM. FUCK THIS WHOLE DAY. FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK!

Yeah, there's such a weird element of trust that the system feels so broken at times. I heard UofT has a dedicated exam center now, so I hope that at least they have some kind of coat check system, but if you're just holding an exam in some random room or whatever... you're kind of fucked.

That said, this is the first time I've ever heard of someone stealing a jacket. I do remember being extra paranoid and choosing to sit near the front/side just to be able to keep an eye on my crap back in my undergrad days though.

Yep, had exams at the MTCC when I was in first and second year, brought the warmest and cheapest thing in my closet, trust absolutely no one in that building.

This isn't the first time I've heard of this and it has happened to one of my Uni friends, best of luck getting the jacket back. :(

Ah man sorry to hear. Honestly I never really thought about that but now I'm going to be extra careful with my jackets and exams.

Every school needs a dedicated exam center with appropriate coat checks. We are paying a shit ton each year the least we can get it some insurance that nobody is going to steal our stuff. Can you believe York doesn't even have a real building dedicated to convocation? That's just being cheap.

happens ALL the time. when i was in school i always made sure to sit in the first row and put my jacket right in front of me, just in case.

I had my bag stolen from inside a school bus at Wonderland, after the security personnel at the park told us to leave our stuff there. Fortunately, I only had a spare shirt to change into, but others lost way more. Go figure.

Now, I'm pretty paranoid about my things. We had our exams in the gym, where you have 200+ people packed in and no sort of check-in system for items. I would sit by the corner where everyone keeps their things to keep an eye on my jacket and bag.

Which school?
Ryerson.

Yeah, we really need a dedicated exam centre. In my 4 years so far, this is the first time I've ever had a problem like this. I wish I could have sat near the front, but everyone is assigned seats and I ended up pretty much in the middle of the whole place. It's shit like this that makes me really wish Ryerson had a facility or at least the room to hold exams for all the different sections of a class, instead of pooling in 2000 students into one area. I hear York now uses the Rexall Centre for their exams and they allow you to bring your stuff to your desk as long as its under the desk/seat.

I really wish I could find out who stole my stuff so I can stab them in the eye.

Really sucks but you didn't know there was a coat check after 4 years?

Not paying for buses is stupid. If you use them, pay for them. "It's only stealing if you get caught" is rediculious.

Definitely, but most people just don't give a shit about where they live anyway. Trash the buses they ride, don't pay fare, be rude to other riders, or drivers. It's always hilarious when people try to board the back of the 501 and there are cops back there checking fare. Some try to talk there way out of it, but much people just try to back out of the streetcar into a crowd.

I didn't even know it existed until this happened. They told me they gave announcements regarding the coat check, but I was wearing headphones while studying. But yeah, in the 4 years, I had no idea. No one ever mentioned it or told me about it.

I guess this is somehow partially my fault.
Can't you take it up with someone higher up than the security guard?
I talked to a guard and I think his super. The super took down my details, but told me that once its gone, it's gone.

I don't think I can go to the school, because I highly doubt they'd care.

What free NYE events are going on in TO this year?

At York we had exams in the gym or in hockey rink, I think we were usually allowed to leave coats and bags on the floor by our table but I really can't remember
