True Detective - Season 2 - We get the Season we deserve - Sundays on HBO

I'm surprised at the negativity about Vaughn.

I actually really like him here.

I wonder what this season's big action moment will be. We got the oner in Season 1 with the robbery gone wrong. I bet it'll be something quieter, maybe one of the protagonists enduring prolonged torture similar to Casper at the hands of Birdman.

I'm hoping he has an amazing scene but as of right now he's just like the rest of them, just super serious and the character doesn't have a sense of humor. In fact everybody is way too serious. We can crack a smile can't we?

Is the birdman from Hotline Miami?

Here's to hoping!

wat? he talked about being bummed out to have to jack off into a cup for his wifes IVF treatments. i didn't get the "super serious all the time" vibe but maybe it's because it's vince vaughn. i'm not exactly looking for beanie from old school here!

must've missed that line. The one time I cracked up was with Velcoro's 'buttfuck your father' line

Why is it that at the end, the three leads introduce themselves to each other, and then Antigone's partner says "The fuck is Vinci" and then walks away.

That's unprofessional dude.

Agreed. I was fine with Vince.

I hate vince Vaughn in general, but I enjoyed his character so far. Nothing amazing, but seems like there's potential and the little banter between him and Ferrel could turn into a great dynamic.

Most of the criticism in here is so forced it's actually hilarious.
Seriously, if I had enough time and cared enough, I'd start rounding up some of these over the top posts to repost once the show is over and everyone is gushing over it.

I'm probably not going to articulate this very well, but the guy is upset because Velcoro walks up and claims "jurisdiction." ("This is my missing person," or something to that effect) My impression is that Antigone and the guy who gets upset are LA or CA state cops, and here's this guy from the tiny town of Vinci, sort of carved out of the LA sprawl, elbowing in on a high profile case. Uncoincidentally, I expect "The fuck is Vinci?" to be a running question throughout the season. Kind of a cool note to end on, I thought.

Based solely off the first episode, parts of it felt like a parody of a "serious" crime show to me. Especially when they were at the bar with the super depressing, emaciated singer on stage.

It's hard to gauge the quality of a season off the first episode, but I'm just hoping it surprises me as it goes along. So far, all of the super dour leads are equally uninteresting to me.

So since they're playing up Vince to be a crooked guy gone straight...

I am excited to see him crack and kick some ass during this show. I think he could act in a role like that.

Basically I'm just excited to see where all the characters go already.
and to discover what the kink is. pls be choking

Well, that was not great.

Exposition and cliches. Exposition and cliches everywhere.

I liked Rachel and Vince Vaughn the best. And Vince Vaughn's wife.

Oh well, it was just the first episode. And I will certainly stay with it for now.

So from what I understand, the whole department of Vince where Velcoro belongs is pretty much corrupted from top to bottom, right? They are all tied to the newspaper article.

Just realized that Velcro's partner is Bill from The Last of Us (plus Deadwood)...

Yup! He's pretty good so far, from the little we've seen of him.

Just finished the first episode and damn this is great. Starts off strong and stays that way throughout. I especially loved the last 10 minutes. The bar scene with Vince and Colin was really interesting, with them starting off just staring at eachother/outwards while that creepy song played in the background.

I was worried that this would end up being kinda generic since the cult stuff is done (at least for now), but all these characters are fucked up in some way and that's part of what makes them interesting. McAdams' character is the only one that hasn't grabbed me just yet, but it's early days.

Yea Im gonna reiterate it.
I watched the intro with "Least Favorite Life" synced up to it and its waaaay better than the official.

I wish it was the intro theme, it's so damn atmospheric!

Absolutely loved it, I am a huge fan of this genre, so I am very excited to see the rest of the season. I don't think it can live up to season one, though, as that was a masterpiece, but season 2 is worthy

The first ep of the first season (from what I recall) was also ambiguous with the plot and the direction of the show, but at least I knew who the leads were and that the show was going to track down some kind of ritualistic murderer.

The first ep of this I don't know what's happening. Kidnapping, extortion, corruption, organised crime, gambling, government bribery -it could be anything. And because I don't know what it is I don't know who the primary characters are and who the secondary characters are.

There were a lot of characters introduced and because I don't know if the main plot will be murder stuff, gambling stuff, cult stuff, bribery stuff I don't know where my fosuc is. I guess some of it ties together but they haven't pulled any thread yet. I get that they're just setting things up but they dumped a lot of stuff in the first ep.

I'm sure it'll pull into focus over the weeks but this first ep was way too ambitious. Way too much material here.

What do you guys think ani's kink is? I think it something bigger than just anal, something violent. Maybe pegging or choking.

Knife play.

She's obsessed with knives. She puts three on her in the locker room scene, and she has a whole wall of blade weapons in her apartment. I like her hippy dad.

Farrell's character was scary - especially the drunk meeting kid at school scene, followed by the domestic knuckle dusting. I figured he was on the edge, but holy shit at that school scene - the kid who's playing his kid looked legit terrified CF was going to smack him.

Not too sure about viagra cop, but I was impressed by the fact they made his cheeks wobble in the simulated wind while he was riding the bike.

VV was good - like other posters I'm looking forward to watching him crack and completely loose it. I'm also looking forward to how Kelly Reilly's character develops - clearly not your average mobster moll.

For me, this quote from the OP nails it:

The result often plays like a cousin of The Wire as directed by Michael Mann

I got about 2/3 of the way into this episode and was all 'WTF is going on? Who are these people?' and the scene with VV & CF in the bar, and the crimescene shot at the end bought the whole thing together. Like a good rug brings a room together.

Very much looking forward to ep2.

Odd start for a season premiere, but I can appreciate the shows pacing thus far. Felt a little lost in the middle, but everything came to a head by the end in a way that excited me for next weeks episode.

Colin Farrell is my favorite thus far.

I liked it. Not as defined as S1 and I doubt it'll touch those heights but I have faith that it will gel by the end and be pretty decent.

Farrell and McAdams characters are the best so far. Kitsch was stiff as hell which is disappointing because everyone else always says that about him in everything else he does and I feel like this is the first time he's lived up to that crappy reputation in my eyes. Vaughn is a nice change from the the 3 detectives who even if I like, are wayyyyyyy too serious.

Colin Farrell is the master at playing real pieces of shit. I mean, he's not entirely a bad guy in this, but he has some very familiar tendencies in a film called Pride and Glory where he threatens to burn a BABY WITH AN IRON in order to get information. Dude is fucking nuts.

Check it out.

I actually really like him here.

Vaughn's performance has been okay so far, I just find him too distracting because of all his past comedic roles. Even though he's acting serious here, it's hard for me to take him seriously. I'm hoping that feeling fades as the season progresses.

I'd rather have an actor like Ed Harris in the role.

I don't understand that at all. Hell, Jim Carrey could be playing the same character. If they are acting, they're acting. You're only doing yourself a disservice by not being able to separate actors from previous roles and intentionally judging a current performance based off of that.

I was actually hoping they'd pull a The Wire and have the same title song as S1, but different vocalist/style or something.

Not a big deal.
I don't like the new song as much, but it helps give this season it's own identity. That's important, I think.

The problem is not his past roles. The problem is that he's not a very good actor. His scenes were so god damn boring, both because of the writing and because he has zero charisma or presence. He just looked sad and uncomfortable the whole time. Now that might end up suiting the role, but for this episode it was just not engaging in the slightest.

He was the damp towl to Colin Farrell's crazy inferno
