True Detective - Season 2 - We get the Season we deserve - Sundays on HBO

That shit was kind of lame. Does Vince Vaugn get to tell those gangsters what to do because he can fight better than everyone else? The guy running away in the mask? The hilarious fat guy taking a picture of the PCH bike cop after he punched his buddy? Just casually walking around on a film set? Wtf?? Half this episode seemed like shitty lazy writing. I know that makes me sound like a douchebag but I dunno... the weird moment where the PCH bike cop made eye contact with Vince Vaughn for 10 whole seconds felt pretty out of place. Or I guess in place given how goofy some of the other moments were

Good scenes: Colin Farrell. When he called the bud grass. And just every other time he was on screen.

it's decent but i don't think anything was ever going to be as good as season 1.

vince vaughn is terrible. so much of the subplots feel tacked on and just unimportant.

it's like that 7/10 sequel to that groundbreaking movie/game/TV show that we seem to get. it's just too hard to catch lightning in a bottle twice

i do love rachel mcdams character though

They need to do something with Rachel's hair. I get it's suppose to look like that, but fuck it just looks so tacky. Her hair is clearly done by a professional then they just run their hands through it real quick and call it a day.

It bothers me so much. Just fucking comb it.

I totally get the lukewarm reviews, since critics were sent these first 3 episodes. Episodes 1 and 3 were way too unfocused and scattershot. On first viewing I can't even tell who the dead guy is, except some goon under Vince Vaughn's umbrella. And Vaughn is definitely the weak link so far, not convincing at all.

So the reviews are based on 3 episodes? That means they change when the whole season has been aired?

This episode would've put me to sleep if I was any more tired tbh. Some of the dialogue was just yikes, and nothing was happening visually. Felt like The Killing minus the rainy atmosphere and Holder dropping goofy lines every 5 minutes......so basically minus any redeeming factors of The Killing.

I like the Farrell/McAdams pairing, but they aren't being given much to work with here.

EDIT: And Vince Vaughn's been throwing up nothing but airballs. I was willing to give him a chance, but if that was him tapping into "the guy he used to be"......nah, it's not working. Tim Riggins is falling flat too.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

I so wanted Colin's character to take an exit.

I wanted them to all take an exit. There's not one interesting person so far.

Video game caliber dialogue, characters and acting.

I'm not sure I'll finish this series.

.. The mayor's son was GTA character.
I thought the dead guy looked like one of the GTAV characters.

Every fucking episode gets worse than the last one.

It looks pedestrian, the acting is nearly universally shit, it's boring as hell, and every other line is a clunker that would be among the worst of any other show I watch. I didn't even really like season one that much, but holy shit it's Shakespeare compared to this mess.

I'm apoplectic.

i'm seemingly enjoying this season more than most people, but after this episode it really feels like the whole "yo dudes this takes place in Cali-fucking-fornia" motif was written by someone who's never actually been to California. there's just something that rings hollow about it. every other shot looks like its trying to replicate something from a David Lynch or Michael Mann film and coming up completely short.

the scene with the woman (seriously who are even half of these characters) telling Bezzerides to essentially seduce Velcoro was so bad. also boo to the self-hating gay trope.

The problem I'm having is none of the characters except for Colin are interesting.
That lady cop and the biker dude are so bland and boring. They pretty much have the same personality.

Do we know why Woodrugh and Ani went to the Mayor's house? I think I may have missed something

A large number of calls had been placed from that second house Colin Farrell found to the Mayor's house.

And I liked tonight's episode well enough. I can understand that some of the dialogue is poorly written and Vince Vaughn isn't doing this show any favors, but McAdams and Farrell are killing it.

The telegraphing of Kitsch's character being gay is getting ridiculous. This is 3 episodes in a row where everything his character does only serves the purpose to remind the audience that he's having a internal battle with coming to terms with his sexuality. Hopefully they do something else with his character that's not just scene after scene of "you know he's gay right?"

The weird thing is that it's almost LA-themed, yet these places are all on the outskirts. Very strange.

almost like the entire premise of Vinci (based on real-life Vernon, CA) has been completely mishandled and is ultimately kind of pointless if all you really wanted was to set your show in Southern California. they might as well have just set the damn show in Los Angeles.

Better.

Can anyone who understands shotguns explain to me what happened though? I either didn't understand or misheard what he said...

I thought it was good. Best 'shot' episode IMO.

The scene with Vince and the Russian was great. Loved the blocking.

Liked Vince fighting but it lacked any ferocity, it was like a fight from a Marvel film where it's more cutesy than brutal. The ending was nice, getting rid of those teeth, but the pliers seemed unnecessary when a more brutal fight might have had him smash them out with his fists.

I was expecting VV to go home and bang his girlfriend after gaining his virility back.

I definitely don't hate VV like everyone else, but CF is leading the pack.

I'm still enjoying it even though there has been no real narrative push yet.

EDIT:
VV's main henchman is probably the worst actor I've ever seen. Even his face is a bad actor...he just looks stupid.

Not bad. I completely get everyone's complaints, but I'm still really enjoying the show.

- Vince Vaughn. I like him here! The fight scene could have used more oomph, yeah, but I liked how it ended. "Is that any way to greet the world?". Plus, if my wife was sitting at the end like that waiting for me, I would not just sullenly walk off to my room.

- Stan! Honestly, I thought Stan was one of Frank's goons at first.

- You could feel the change of director here. Really wish Lin stuck around for the whole season.

- I think everyone pretty much called Brokeback Afghanistan over there. I actually think any amusing side plotline would be Woody teamed up with the male hooker who awakens within him, himself.

- The Mayor of Vinci continues to crack me up. Also, his fucked up family, looooool. His son, what a ridiculous person. His absurdly hot Russian mail order wife. Dude's like the real life Mayor Quimby!

- Okay, the State Attorney or whatever, and that garbage line to Rachel MacAdams. There is NO WAY that everyone didn't cringe when she was trying to get Antigone to like... hit on Ray or something. The fuck? That was the worst piece of dialogue.

- Regarding some of the dialogue, I honestly think that after someone says something weird or oblique, and there is someone else in the room, the other person should just be like "What... the fuck are you talking about?"

- That opening scene had me in stitches. I Love You, Pizzaman.

- Farrell continues to by the MVP of this season. His scene with his ex-wife, his dad, the corrupt bureaucracy, the doctor, dude's KILLING it! He remains a fascinating derailed human trainwreck that maybe has a shot of getting his shit together. I like that he quit drinking cause he wants to stay pissed.

- Lol, that scene with the mustachioed cop and Antigone.

- I found it funny that Woody rarely met anyone's eye after he punched his gay buddy. These two have a bright future together!

Alright, Birdman Suspect List:

- The Mayor's daughter
- The Mayor's supertan weirdo son
- The Mayor's drugged out wife
- Ray's Lieutenant (my current primary suspect! - part of the corrupt bureaucracy, has access to the riot rounds)
- Frank's Right Hand Man
- Future Ghost of Ben Casper

I mean why even use a fictitious city at all, I don't see the point.

Probably cause the season will end with the (on paper) destruction of Vinci. The rest of the world keeps on turning, but the powers that be will probably have a downfall. Easier to pull with a fake town then saying "Oh, Vernon got taken down cause of Colin Farrel and Vince Vaughn".

Better.

Can anyone who understands shotguns explain to me what happened though? I either didn't understand or misheard what he said...

Ray got shot by a rubber bullet or beanbag round. Less-than-lethal riot control ammunition. Birdman wasn't looking to kill him.

what did colin farrell say when he saved mcadams from the truck?

couldn't understand it properly

"Tell me what State has on me"

I was expecting VV to go home and bang his girlfriend after gaining his virility back.

So was I, hahaha

Do you mean when he asked her to thank him by telling him what the state has on him? (Basically, what evidence does the state have against him.)

Edit: Beaten!

Dialogue delivery is shit or the sound mixing is shit. Can't even understand half the time what they are saying. Fuck this show.

Sound mix is fine, but absurdly low. I have to turn my shit a lot. When watching Ballers after (on HBOGO), I have to turn it way back down to normal levels.

Don't know about you, but I have been having hard time with dialogues. Lot of people on Reddit have same problem too.

Yeah, some of the stuff is mumbly and whispery.

The scene in the club where Vaughn is talking to the escort was so weird. It was silent and bright as day in there.

Season 1 was something special. Season 2 is generic procedural cop drama.

The sound mix on Hannibal is insane too.

whisper whisper BLLRRRAAAANNNGGHHH whisper whisper BLLLAAAARRRRRRNGG.

Was good, but weakest of the 3. The writing is a lot worse than S1. I mean two eps in a row of the "mysterious badguy" just waiting until the cops show up to destroy evidence (and the whole badly running away chase scene in this ep; dude was knocking into so many things he should've just been caught) and yeah the internal sexuality battle of motor-cop is getting old quick.

Also not killing Farrel makes me wonder if the original script killed him but the studio wouldn't let them kill their star 2 eps in. Killing him makes so much sense since his story arc could basically have been finished by ep2. We know his entire story, he wants out, he'll never get out until he's dead. The end. Tragic character. And killing him like that would've shown that the series was unpredictable and no one is safe, raising the stakes of the show and making it far more exciting. Would be a way to set S2 apart from S1 right from the get go.

Otoh, by not killing him they keep their best actor and most interesting "human" character. McAdams is entertaining but too one-note. Vaugh just...can't act :| At this point we just need to accept that his story will be kind of crappy straight-to-tv acted and enjoy it for what it is.

That is exactly what ran through my head. It would have given the show crazy buzz too. And you know what, it would have really helped if they could get rid of one of the "stars." The first season was fine with McConaughey and Harrelson, I don't know why they expanded this season to four central characters. There's just too much to follow.

He is like the LBJ in Cavs. You get rid of him and you end up with a big pile of crap. Only reason I am watching this is because of his role, and maybe Mc Addams.

Lera Lynn not being in this episode singing a depressing song was a shame.

Okay, so whoever is doing the killing, they're directly targeting Frank. Though they're okay with killing people, so why not just fucking kill him.
