I'm about to catch up on Sherlock and I need a new show to start watching. Recommendations please!

Here's a list of shows I've watched or I'm catching up with that I like:

The Walking Dead
Breaking Bad
The Shield
SuperNatural
Sherlock
The Wire
Dexter (Up to Season 4. Didn't watch anything beyond this point)

Is each episode it's own story or does it have continuity?

Shameless (US), Archer, Louie, Southland, Mad Men, Eastbound & Down, Fringe, Portlandia.

Doctor Who has both standalone episodes and continuity episodes. The eps the other person posted give you enough information to start season 5 (when they introduce a new doctor) and still understand everything.

Started watching Doctor Who (the new series). It's strangely addicting, and I was a bit afraid going in, since there are so many damn episodes. Now I'm about eight episodes in and excited for more.

I've just finished S2 of Boardwalk Empire.

It's just so mundane, the production values are amazing but that's it. The writing has been done before, the characters are ripped straight from The Sopranos, same with the stories. The relationships are forced. Steve Buscemi just isn't fearsome as Nuckey. Terrible all round.

Just plowed through the first 4 seasons of Foyle's War. It's so addicting despite being rather simplistic detective stories.

After watching this and a year or two ago watching all of Wire in the Blood, I really wish more shows followed that true hour and half long format with shorter seasons of only 4 hour so episodes. You really get a feel for whats going on and the characters. It's not some quick 40 minute affair that just shoots through everything to the end.

I recently watched all of Always Sunny, since they finally put it on Netflix. Holy shit, I was not ready for how great it was. Probably my new favorite comedy. I had caught it in syndication from time to time but they were always the same episodes and were censored, so glad I finally got to seeing them all.

Also just started Wilfred, haven't seen the Australian show but I'd be interested considering how great the U.S. Version has been so far.

The moral of the story is, I love Netflix

My wife got hooked on Doctor Who a few years ago and now my kids also enjoy it. I enjoy them enjoying it - that makes any sense. They're cheesy and formulaic but they make the house a happier place when they're on. The Doctor is very a very positive kind of character.

I caught up with the 2nd season of Game of Thrones and I thought it was better than Season 1, which wasn't bad by any means. I also watched the latest season of Weeds and though I've enjoyed the show from the beginning I think I'm just about done with it now.

Just gone done with the first season of Shameless (US). It's one of my favorite seasons in a long time.

This is the perfect show for you to sit back, turn your head off from the rest of the world and watch. It's funny, dirty, creative, heart-felting, and sometimes, dark. The whole cast is top-notch, and it's a big one. The way they connect is just a pleasure to watch.

Amy Smart made her first appearance in the penultimate episode, and I already wanted her to become a regular. I hope we see her around for S2. My favorite character is Lip. He's boss.

I couldn't recommend this show enough.

Deadwood.

I actually had it on my queue for a long time but never bothered to watch it. I'm in the mood for something more modern.

btw thank you to the guy who recommended Sherlock. I absolutely love it. It's a shame that there are only 6 episodes so far.

Edit: I started watching Dr. Who. It's interesting so far, but it hasn't clicked with me yet.

Stick with it-especially if you haven't gotten to season 5 yet. Matt Smith is the best.

I began watching Deadwood a few days ago after years of reading praise to the series dialogue and great character portrayals. Calamity Jane is fucking hilarious.

My favorite character, however, is Al for his character's color is of the deepest shade of gray. His current situation in season 2 is quite unfavorable I must admit. If you watched the show you know exactly what I'm talking about. Those scenes with Al are the most gruesome, fist clenching, sweat inducing scenes I've witnessed in a TV show lol.

Doctor Who is a very inconsistent show. Some episodes are the epitome of genius, however other episodes are the epitome of shit. I like the series overall (I have only seen Smith), but it is slightly overrated imo.

The Wire Season 1

Godly.

Should I check out the other seasons?

I haven't seen The Wire yet (shame on me, I know), but if you think season 1 is godly, why wouldn't you continue?

Because sometimes season 2 isn't as great as the first season and so on.

My wife and I just did the same, though we are already up to Series 6 with Matt Smith.

Season 2 is a bit slower paced and takes place in a different part of town, but has a great story that plays in important role throughout the series.

Some people are lukewarm on season 2 at first and end up really appreciating it on rewatch. But even if you don't care for it, season 3 will have more of what you want, and season 4 is widely considered the highpoint of the series.

I enjoy season 2 of The Wire differently. I probably like season 1 better, but I could never imagine not watching season 2. The Wire is a whole, you haven't seen it until you've seen all of it.

Season 2 of the Wire is excellent. All the Wire is, not a bad season or a bad episode out of the lot.
I really love S2 but some people don't like what they consider the shift of focus, but of course it all ties back together.

Also frank Sobotka is one of my favorite characters. He wasn't a bad guy-he wanted the best for his guys and just wanted to look the other way. Fucking Ziggy.

Season 2 is awesome, its only a little jarring at first but all the old Barksdale organization characters are still there, they're just operating more in the background because they're not the main focus of the investigation. A lot of my favorite moments of the entire series are in season 2 (prop joe + sergei etc.) and the ending is brutal

Either way stopping after season 1 with this show would be like only reading the first chapter of a great novel. It's set up so that each season is a part of the whole

I've watched the first 2 seasons of Downton Abbey and I'm super impressed. Lots of great characters and actors, I love all the melodrama, the time period is very interesting, I've always been a big fan of "The times are a changin" theme in anything and the show handles it well. Besides utterly horrid, jarring cuts/scene transitions, it's a great show and I can't wait to watch more. Also I am in love with Lady Sybil.

Deadwood.
Yes.

I'm halfway through season 2, and I'd thoroughly recommend it. The writing man, it's magnificent.

E.B. Farnum and Amos "Doc" Cochran are two of the best written characters I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Each line is like a little poem.

Also, Strafer, watch The Wire. It is indeed, kind of neat.

Third favourite show after The Sopranos and Six Feet. LOST is top ten material, don't worry. ;P

Yeah, I'm another one who loves that season, in fact I'd go as far as to say it's my favourite. Definitely the most tragic of the lot, the ending almost brought me to tears.

Recently watched all of Deadwood and I think it ranks up there with The Wire and The Sopranos. I've never wanted to a character to get killed more than George Hearst.

Recently decided to start watching Angel since it's up on netflix. I've never watched Buffy but I'm really enjoying Angel so far, even tho I'm only 2 episodes in.

I have a really hard time deciding between The Wire and Deadwood. Deadwood has the best writing and acting in the medium and probably the best cast, better cinematography and sets etc., but The Wire comes really close in terms of writing. But also The Wire just takes on a lot more and is a more important show overall

I need to rewatch Sopranos, I don't think i've seen it since it ended

I can't stop watching 'Catfish'. I know it's staged, sensationalist drivel. I know that the producers are fully aware of the identities of the 'Catfish', but for some reason I've fallen victim to the schlock expose of people hiding behind fake internet identities.

Forever entertained.

I just finished watching The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. It's a pretty good, albeit very silly comedy about an American who is desperately trying to sell/market an energy drink in the UK. The humor is very cringe inducing and awkward and mortifying and it got more than a few explosive laughs out of me.

The
Jon Hamm cameo had me dying of laughter
and the ending was such an amazing train wreck.

I gave it a thumbs down after the first 2 episodes. IF it actually got better I would like to know too.
Yeah, the second episode of Continuum wasn't great. The action and the main arc aren't bad, but the attempts at pulling the heartstrings towards the end were pretty ham-fisted. Not sure if I'm going to watch any more.

gosh this is so bad. the story in intself could be actually quite good if they had some proper writing and an better actress. that woman just can't act. everything she says sounds so fake, every face she makes looks so unauthentic.

and wth is with the writing. in Ep 4 they sort of meet for the first time, in Ep 5 they are already eating breakfast together as if they have known each other for a couple of weeks/months even. and than she kind of has them al researched out with all those newspaper articles and what not.that sort of research takes a lot of time. the time scale just doesn't fit. fucking hell smh. so annoying. it could have been so good.

It has a lot of current actors in their very early career. Such as James Franco, Seth Rogen, Martin Starr, Jason Segel, Samm Levine

An amazing show that was cancelled due to the unfortunate spree of that awful show, "Who wants to be a millionaire"

Utopia a channel 4 show. Pretty entertaining show so far. I would love to have a name like Wilson Wilson and literally have no electronic data that proves my existence.
