DigiTimes has come out with an unusually detailed report claiming that Apple will release not one, but two new iPads in January. There will supposedly be a high-end iPad with an 8-megapixel camera, a 1536 x 2048 screen lit by dual-LED light bars, a quad-core A6 processor, and a massive 14,000mAh battery that's nearly twice the capacity of the iPad 2. A mid-range iPad is said to have a 5-megapixel camera while the existing iPad 2 would continue as Apple's low-end option, presumably with a reduced price to help it compete with inexpensive Android tablets.

Several pieces of the report do line up with previous reports we've heard of an iPad HD, including the pixel-doubled screen resolution and the idea that there would be a high-end iPad in the market at the same time as the existing iPad 2. However, DigiTimes also says that it would be released at iWorld (formerly just "Macworld") in January — a detail that casts a shadow over the entire report given Apple's withdrawal from the show and DigiTimes' rather lackluster record when it comes rumors about companies not based in its home country of Taiwan.

Big ol' bags of salt.

I'm holding off on an iPad 2 purchase currently mostly because I want to spend my money on something else but also because I do want to just go ahead and get an iPad 3 when it drops.

Kind of off topic but does anyone know when the next iPhone model is expected to be announced? I might be in the market one

I'm a bit confused by the wording. So the second tier has a 5Mp camera ... and what? Is that the only difference between it and the iPad 3 ... or the iPad 2? If it's the latter, what's the point. Then again, if it's the former ... what's the point? A better camera is a pretty small expense. Something seems fishy here.

Well, for one, Apple rumors coming out of Taiwan have been notoriously off the mark. Secondly, Apple won't fracture the iPad market (you heard right) by introducing a "fighter" model against Android tablets. To put it simply, there really isn't a market for tablets outside of the iPad, period.

Fighter-versions of the iPhone would've been more believable.

I did an upgrade/buyback option on my iPad2 from Best Buy because I could see this happening, seems like it's their M.O. -- modest upgrade, big upgrade, modest upgrade, big upgrade, etc.

But I dunno. After playing around with my brother in law's Asus Transformer over Christmas, goddamn those are sexy. I really want a Windows capable tablet next, though. Hurry the fuck up, Microsauce.

IMO wait until next year and either get an iPad or a Win8 tablet.

And note, I'm posting this from my Transformer :p

Not really getting the tablet love. My mom has an iPad and I find it uncomfortable to use for long periods of time. Nothing beats the good ol laptop for laying on the couch and browsing the net for hours.

That's the exact scenario where I find tablets work best.

How do you do an upgrade/buy back? I just bought mine a few days ago.

Edit: Nevermind.

When the iPad 3 drops, you really might as well start waiting for the iPad 4.

Digitimes...

I do think we'll obviously see a significant bump in screen res for iPad 3. Double capacity battery seems generous, quad-core is probable.

One of the worst Apple rumors of the year since it is so obviously false. The source, digitimes, is dubious at best to begin with.

First off, Apple has no presence at Macworld/iWorld. They publicly left the convention - why would they return to do a keynote but not support the show?

Further, A 14000 mAH battery would take 28 hours to charge and would be massive, the 17 inch MacBook pro doesn't even have a battery that size. The tech doesn't exist in the current iPad form factor.

Apple doesn't care about what the competition does - they never have and they don't plan around it.

This is a glorified PR stunt for the new iWorld convention, plain and simple.

Err wat? That's usually the moment I wish I have a tablet because I fear I'd drop my macbook from my lap. I tend to surf in half-asleep state on my bed.

Apple updates their hardware every 2 years, so I don't think they would release A5 in 2011 and A6 in 2012, unless the report is misreporting and it's actually the same chip in quad version to support the resolution increase.

I think splitting the iPad from 1 products into 2 seems like the wrong move.

I agree and on top of that given how Apple seems to be getting away from profesional products I can't imagine them making an "iPad Pro".

I don't think we can say for certain what Apple plans to do with iPad hardware since there's only been two iterations with it, but with the release of the iPad 2 and iPhone 4s it looks like they may be looking to introduce new hardware in the iPad, the iPad and the iPad 2 both had new processors, and then shrink it down to fit in an iPhone. So I wouldn't be surprised at all if the iPad 3 has an A6

I haven't touched my laptop in the two years of having an iPad. Laptop browsing sucks ass.

Yup. Love watching people try to type on tablets. It's so cute.

When did you buy yours? Also, I checked how much they'd give for a 32 gig wifi that is $600. They'd offer $300 up to 6 months after purchase. That isn't good at all. You wouldn't have a tough time at all finding someone to pay you $400-450. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding the program?

Best Buy is basically selling convenience to people that don't want to hawk their stuff on ebay or craigslist to extract max value.

It's basically a new form of the extended warranty racket.

I tried to type a 14-word sentence with my eyes closed on my keyboard and to my utter astonishment I didn't make a single mistake. I tried to type the same sentence on my touchpad and while I got the 1st two words right, the last were random jumbles of letters and numbers. lol

It was fun browsing the net on this thing the first few months I got it, but the appeal recently wore off and I haven't used it do anything other than watch YouTube videos.

I've always thought that the touch screen thing was a complete gimmick, especially when it comes to typing. After being awed and dazzled by it in sci-fi movies, we've convinced ourselves that it's "the next step" in the evolution of technology. I think we've made computing "fun" and "cool", but not "better"; it's almost like a toy.

In 50 years, can I see a bunch of journalists using touch screens to write up their pieces? No. It simply doesn't make for a more convenient or intuitive alternative.

You don't do anything with a Touchpad because it doesn't have anything to do. That's where Apple gets it, and that's why the App Store and iPad are so popular.

No one is promoting tablets as replacing computers, and no one expects people to type on them. Steve Jobs straight up said all of this when he introduced the iPad. It's just a thing that does things. If you're not into it, it's cool.

Touchpad is my bedroom comics / streaming porn consumption device.

I also have some magazine PDF's on it in the rare event I don't feel like beating off.

That is such a load ofcrap. That resolution is ridiculous. How big is the screen going to be and with that battery and processor what is the size of the unit and how much will it cost?

That sounds like a very high end PC monitor @ 24-26inches.

The size of a screen really isn't dependent on a resolution (and vice versa). The resolution quoted isn't exactly ridiculous, either. It would come in the same size as the current iPad. The battery will obviously have to be larger and I imagine Apple will want to be as close to the current iPad battery life as they can.

That all sounds about right in relation to where the tech stands right now. We know Samsung, Toshiba and LG are shipping prototype 10" screens that match that spec, we've already seen ARMs roadmap that supports the processor. The only slightly fuzzy detail is the battery. It's doable but likely with a compromise on device thickness and heaviness that Apple may not be willing to make.

There's nothing in that spec that is out of the realms of possibility.

Whatever the specs, I'll be preordering the high end model for day 1 release. Shut up and take my money Apple.

Posted from my iPad.
