Well, for one, Apple rumors coming out of Taiwan have been notoriously off the mark. Secondly, Apple won't fracture the iPad market (you heard right) by introducing a "fighter" model against Android tablets. To put it simply, there really isn't a market for tablets outside of the iPad, period.
Fighter-versions of the iPhone would've been more believable.
You think Apple can continue to ignore the lower price point market for a whole other year? While sales for non-iPad tablets have been crappy, the introduction of the new Nook and Kindle Fire I think will be successful mainly because of their low price. With a third revision of the iPad I don't think it would be out of the question to keep the iPad 2 or even the original as the budget model. It obviously works with the iPhone since this past season iPhone 3GSes were free after contract and I believe I just saw heard a promotion with an iPhone 4 free after contract. People who don't have the budget to buy the premium will still buy the less expensive options to be hip and cool.
Wouldn't expect any news from it until next Fall. That is, unless Apple feels like announcing the iPhone 5 in June next year and only leave the 4S feeling new for 9 months.
