Ubisoft suing SomethingAwful for fake porno image of Jade Raymond on its forums

Take a step back for a minute, what if your wife or girlfriend or sister or even your mother worked in Promotions and the same type of comic was posted about them, clearly identifying them & their job. I wonder how some of you would feel about it then, how would your wife or girlfriend feel?
Its one thing to make fun of someone, and a complete different thing to portray someone in this manner.

How is this dirt? Jade Raymond sucking nerdcocks for sales?
It's completely silly. If I was Jade I probably would have laughed, complained about the poor job they did drawing my nose, and left it at that.

I have already said multiple times that she needs to just shrug this off, assuming she's upset in the first place. And I use the term dirt-digging generally. It is in our blood to undermine those around us. The fact that this is a male-dominated world only amplfies matters when a female is involved.

Honestly, does it matter? If the roles were reversed, and you were the primary PR for your company's project, would you agree to a photoshoot where you were standing out in the spotlight, several feet in front of the entire team who has busted their asses for years on this product? Don't they deserve at least as much credit for their effort? I think it's an incredibly shitty thing to do, and you'd better believe that I'd flat-out refuse to allow a publication to portray me as some ego maniacal glory hound, which is exactly how the photo comes across.
Once again - other press-friendly and photogenic team leads like Cliffy B do this all the time. They're the "face" of the game. It stands out more when it's a woman because that's much more rare, is all. And we're all so fucking mature on the internet that the response is cock-sucking webcomics.

What the hell did she do to deserve that?

I know: She made the mistake of being an attractive woman working in the videogame industry.
Would you disagree that there has been a disproportionate number of video interviews, etc. with her compared to other major titles? No one else involved with the game has been given the time of day.

Let's have fun with this quote...

Kojima doesn't develop shit.

It's fuckening sickening to see Kojima stand 12 feet in front of everyone of the entire development team that spends 23 hours a day making the fuckin game while Kojima frowns (he does) all day long, says canned-PR shit and gets all the attention and becomes the face of the game. Konami primed it this way.

the fact that fuckin Shuyo Murata...the goddamn lead game designer is 20 feet in the back left behind Kojima is just retarded. I'm sorry.

I could do that to about another 10 times with different people...

I met Patrice earlier in the year when I tested the game at Ubisoft in Montreal. I chit chatted with him about the game and Jade's role etc. Very chill dude very open and there was no animosity towards Jade at all. She's the producer he's the lead developer thats how it goes. She's an accomplished programmer / coder on her own and has done the long days coding.

Of course Jade is going to be out and center all the time. Cliffy B was the producer for Gears, he demo'd it live at E3 like Jade did etc. Its her game she's going to be out promoting, I don't see why you would need to degrade her like that. Sure its the internet , funny and its Something Awful so its expected. But it wasn't in good taste, thats my opionion at least.

The unfortunate truth. Yet, a lawsuit only brings more un-needed attention to it.

A lot of people think Cliffy B is an over-rated self promoting ass himself.

Parody is 100 percent legal by fair use of copyright laws. Theres nothing wrong with what SA did. Hilarious response though

Agreed, i'm just pointing out that it producers being put out there happens a lot for many reasons. Sure she probably was put out there because she's attractive, but why is that so bad? Unless we find out that she was just a plant and had nothing at all to do with this game except for doing interviews for it, then she was still the producer. She still worked on the game. Through all of this we still haven't heard anything come out of UBI suggesting that people who worked on the game are upset that she gets so much attention. That surfergirl site posts a lot of stories about how UBI is incredibly dysfunctional, but none of them suggest that people had a problem with Jade being at the front of AC.

I'm not suggesting that anyone is upset that Jade Raymond is getting attention. What I'm saying is that if you put someone out there as a figurehead based purely on their sex appeal, you run the risk of people seeing through it.

Sure, she's probably got some great things to say and she can clearly contribute to the production of great video games, but that's not why Ubisoft are pushing her so heavily.

I have nothing against sarcasm or even harsh jokes. But this comic is utterly untasteful and obviously it wasn't made by a man de facto.

Producers in Japan have a bigger role in the industry, from not just 'managing' the budget, but realizing it, hiring specific members from various studios, hands on with the actual creative process of the game, PR the title, deal with the press, manage the press schedule, have the ability to make the final call as to what or what does not get into the game, to focus test or not etc.,
From my conversations with Patrice and Jade at GDC, she had all those roles as well. Jade has been on Assassin's since pretty much its inception.

There are various levels of producers in the industry. You have Executive Producers, which are pretty much directors, producers which are broken up into specialized roles, as well as associate producers.

Yet that's something the internet doesn't want to believe. The internet wants to believe she's an empty PR whore. That's how goddamned sad we are.

and north american producers, what do they do? You're obviously an industry insider, I'd like to know what north american producers do when they work on a game? Please tell me.

Seriously, isn't all that stuff what producers do anyway and thusly all that Jade? People are so goddamn obsessed she's the spoke person and think she doesn't do any when we already knows she's the producer.

Don't make it out like another hur hur hur...Japanese>>>Western devs discussion.

I seem to be getting a different idea from the comic.

That comic isn't about Jade at all it is about social rejects whose closest relationship with an attractive woman is buying a game where one of the producers of the game is a woman.

That isn't Jade doing that, that is those poor losers imagining Jade doing that.

Bullshit.

BULL.SHIT.

It's not about Jade at all... yet it shows her not only acting like an moron, but getting on her knees and sucking geeks dicks... as social criticism?
That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

Did I miss the panel where a Ubi CEO tells her to do that, magnifying the idea that maybe corporate is pushing her as a 'whore'? No. I didn't. She just standing there in a bathing suit, ready to inspire people to buy her game- giving b.j's, as all women clearly do to be successful.

There is no indication that anyone is 'imagining' that in the panels. Are you fucking kidding me?

if the artist is claiming that's what it is, it's damage control- but based on his other work, he's probably loving the attention this shit is getting.

That's probably true. UbiSoft know they have a marketable asset and they're exploiting it. It's up to the consumer to either buy into that or reject it. If I was JR I'd probably have gone along with it too if I believed it was going to help promote the game. You have to let your conscience be your guide.

The more I look at that photo (ahem) the more I find it a little unsettling that Jade is so far removed from the rest of the team. I have no doubt that this was at the heavy suggestion of the gaming mag - they are even keener to push this kind of shit than the PR flaks are. But we need to know the context - if that photo accompanied an interview with JR it makes perfect sense to separate her out from the team like that. If it was a general piece, you can maybe make a bigger argument for the photo arrangement being bonus. It's not as simple as it appears.

Not all developers are comfortable with kind of star treatment - even the non-hot ones. I remember when we did "25 Game Gods" in PC Gamer years ago, Warren Spector was not comfortable being singled out as an individual; he only agreed to be photographed for the feature if he could also submit a sidebar piece about how game development is a team effort and all the credit doesn't belong to him. Now that's classy.

Sorry dude, but I didn't see it that way at all when I first saw the comic. This scenario didn't pop into my head until someone actually mentioned it. I can see how people might think that way, but yeah, it's all about perspective, and seems like yours is in the minority.

Half the reason people make comics like these is to elicit the frothing reaction from internet moralists that you guys have so eagerly provided. Way to go, nerds.

Just checked back & I'm bailing out of this thread now,

I can both see the reasons why people find this fine & funny or offensive & disgusting for the reasons previously stated.

de gustibus non est disputandum

My poor sweet Jade.

No female deserves this, as all females are delicate flowers and need a true romantic like me to protect them from the world.

I shall find the cretin who produced this travesty and I shall prank call him for great justice!

EXCELSIOR!

:lol

You guys! This is probably in the 1st percentile of disgusting and offensive things on the internet. There are better crusades to join.

And with that, I'm done here.

i haven't read the thread because i like coming to GAF and i'm sure the responses would make me not want to. fact of the matter is this is stupid. ok, we make fun of people with weight problems here (we meaning GAF, i don't photoshop shit cuz i'm lazy). but saying, "this guy is fat, lolz" is different from saying , "this guy is fat because he eats dicks all day and swallows gallons of semen. here's a funny comic to illustrate how much of a man-whore he is". if she doesn't even wear clothes that are too revealing then why go on and make her scantily clad, cock sucking and covered in jizz if your only point is "Ubi is putting her before the game"? like....what? if the general consensus is that this is ok in videogame land then i doubt women will ever really be prominent in gaming because it's too much frat house bullshit going on. and that's fucked up because more women means more people, period. more people means more of an opportunity for something innovative or creative. i know the VG industry gets called childish and it'll never earn respect like the film industry, but damn it man, do we have to prove them right every single fucking time?

and yes i know, i'm defending her, i don't have a sense of humor, blah, blah, blah. whatever dude. you don't call a woman a whore if she isn't one. it's not cool in high school, it's not cool in the work place, it's not cool just because she's in the industry spotlight. if you knew real women i don't see how this could be funny to you. grow up.

Do people realize that Jade Raymond didn't take that photo of her in front of the developers herself? It's idiotic to blame her for that.
No, but she still agreed to the layout of the photo, otherwise she wouldn't have let it be taken in that specific way. Sorry, but all the good producers I've worked with would never have framed themselves in that sort of shot. If the photographer insisted on them being up-front, they would have pushed back and, at the very least, had the rest of the team leads share equal billing at the front. They would have also pushed for a better camera angle to capture the rest of the team.

To do otherwise sends the wrong message to your project staff.

Ubisoft shouldn't have done anything at all.

This is the internet, FFS.

just here at neogaf we have pictures and gifs of every major videoogame business (wo)man performing degrading activities.

Far more important people like Miyamoto and their likes have been going through this shit constantly, why must ubisoft take action to protect Princess Jade?

silly.

You just learned something about Quebec province. (if you don't understand i'll explain to ya in PM)

I think what people are missing is the comic was done when the Current News of the day Was she was gonna strip down to a bikini and pose in maxim. So the assumption was Ubisoft and herself was whoring off her body so geeks could jerk off to her.

Obviously it was later proven she was indeed not doing such a photoshoot but the comic was from that period which is why shes wearing the bikini she was rumored to wear in the photoshoot.

Isn't that the stereotypical perfect woman? The fact that ubisoft isn't part of the deal or shown pushing her into it makes me lean towards my interpretation instead of yours.

I see the comic as making fun of every person who types "she is hot!" 1-handed in every thread that mentions her. Just check the threads, there are quite a few people fitting that particular bill.

Oh so she was the tool who was on stage in front of me at E3 showing the demo of AC.

I always wondered why they brought her out, and now I know.

Kojima is the director though.

Director is considerably more involved creatively than producer.

That said, Jade did her job perfectly for AC.
