Mike Goldie doing a great job with the fighter introductions, I might even prefer him over Rogan.
I found it to be a bit of an insult to the crowd that they didn't do the introductions and all that in Portuguese with a Brazilian announcer.

And even though he's Canadian, he STILL fucked up Yves Jabouin's last name pronunciation.

The booing of all non-Brazilian fighters was a bit much, and disappointing. I guess I overestimated the Brazilian audience. Booing foreign fighters just because they are foreign makes you come off like a noob crowd.

Suddenly USA chants don't seem so bad.

I could've told you that the Brazilian crowd is significantly worse, ruder, and more ignorant than the American crowd. I will be surprised if there's no "Ihh se fudeu" or a "Vai tomar no cu" and the like tomorrow.

It's great that Nog had all those surgeries like on the two sides of his hips and on a knee and all.

He forgot to have surgery on his chin though.

They're a futbol country, so I expected exactly this. That kind of fanaticism and nationalism comes directly from the futbol fan culture.

Manaus is actually where a lot of Jungle Fight events take place, a lot of tradition in that area.

Yeah. It's significant to the history of the sport in Brazil.

According to everything I've read about the history of Vale Tudo ect. (The best thing recently being Dave Meltzer's tremendous history piece I just read in the Observer,) I think Salvador in Bahia would probably be the second or third most-important city historically, since that's where Vale Tudo was kept alive after it was banned in Rio, airing a prime time TV in the 60's and early 70's in the NE region, and the home territory of legends like Pereira and Gomes. I think it would be cool to have a UFC there just for the history, and it's not nearly as far away as Manaus from Rio, Sao Paulo, and Brasilia.

From Ari's interview with Feritita the other day, it sounds like they want to try to do two big events in Brazil and two "Fight Night" style events there too in the near future, so there will be plenty of places to explore options.

Do you have a link to that interview? I'd like to see/read it.

The problem with doing up to 4 events in Brazil is the fact that the arenas in most cities are rudimentary. HSBC Arena is good because they had to do it for the Pan Am games and now for the Olympics, I don't know if there's any decent stadiums with a big screen in Salvador or the whole NE region for that matter. Heck I don't even know whether they'll have to install the big screen for the Manaus stadium or if it already has one now.

Do people really favor fighters from their country? I watched the Countdown to 134 and want Silva to lose so badly. I know he's the greatest but he's annoying.

My fav fighters are from Brazilian and USA (Page and the real master troll, Anderson Silva). I'm from the US and don't really give a fuck where someone is from.

I think everyone has a little bit on nationalism in them, I mean I'm Canadian and I support my boy GSP all the way

I don't give a shit. A lot of American fighters I want to see laid out.

Yeah I have absolutely no nationalism, supporting Silva all the way...Even when Silva does nothing he's still the antithesis of boring, so I don't understand the hate, though I realize you were talking about GSP.

I've got a friend who roots for the white guy in every fight. Dude swears its just a coincidence.

Same. Reading that you have to be asian to think Okami can win might've been the dumbest thing I've ever seen on NeoGAF regarding MMA. I mean, really? I hate to even acknowledge it.

It's not an interview. It's a massive, 33-page history paper.

It's well worth the read though. It's truly awesome. I just had a .txt file with the formatting and everything all screwed up. Anyone who is a regular on WrassleGAF can tell you how screwed up these things are. I'm almost done reading it, and I've been fixing it as I go along, because it's one of those things that I want to have in my documents folder forever, especially if I ever get an iPad.

I'll finish fixing the formatting and make a .pdf and send you a link to it in a few minutes.

Yushin Okami counters opponent Anderson Silva's locally unpopular support of the Corinthians futbol club with public support of rival club Flamengo

okami-_lutadorufc_gcom_30.jpg

Perfect way to try and siphon some fan support from Anderson. He's playing the mind game his way, not as blatantly as Chael did. I'm willing to bet this move was at least influenced by the Oregon Gangster though.

Yaco is a troll dude.

and fuck that GSP is boring shit. It isn't his fault his opponents are on a lower level. People just hate him and Silva because they are dominate. When you beat up a guy that is supposed to be number two in your class and do it with one eye, you're a badass.

In a sport with mostly american athletes (or any sport really), I'm sure any nationalism shines through for non americans. As a Canadian, yeah, I'll always root for a fellow canuck fighting.

If his opponents are on a lower level, he should do what Silva did and go up a weight class.

I'm a Canadian who will be wearing a "Don't Be Scared Homie" t-shirt in Vegas come October.

He's too concerned with his image instead of fighting so he won't do that.

I'm glad ppl are finally starting to rally around my message of GSP being a boring athlete.

Just wait until my glorious OT in Oct representing the 209, the real main event BJ and Condit, and pride legend CC.

...and I'm half an hour from the 209 and picking GSP. Funny ain't it?

picking GSP and okami, jeez you must have a thing for boring top control specialists. need to get someone to strip you of your wand avatar, but it's post-surgery, dana white lapdog, tomato can wand, so w/e.

People need to get over this. MMA isn't boxing, moving up in weight isn't easy. Hendo is a prime example of that. GSP cuts from 190; Anderson cuts from above 210. On fight night the weight difference would be ridiculous. Same reason Anderson going to fight Bones would be stupid.

they both could fight up a weight class. anderson tooled griffin, a former 205 champion and very underrated overall. hell he could probably beat jones too, i'm not exactly sure why jones would be a favorite. plus his total evisceration of rich franklin, who's also a huge guy, and has acquitted himself quite well at 205 as well.

and gsp could fight at 185 as well. he cuts 30 lbs to fight at 170. he would never go up to 185 until anderson retires.

You sound like someone who's never appreciated good wrestling. It's a part of the sport.

I was talking about the interview with Fertitta.

EDIT: Though I do appreciate the pdf link as well, will make for a good read.

Yeh the Vale Tudo history is fascinating. Really interesting topic I knew almost nothing about.

When Mark coleman retired, so did my love for mma wrestling.

Well hate to tell you, but I appreciate all facets of the sport. I can enjoy Wand and I can enjoy GSP. They're both masters of their crafts in a mixed discipline sport.

By the way, your comments about Okami fans was pretty distasteful. This is from someone who isn't even asian.

Oh, the interview was on mmafighting.com just look in the "latest" videos.

...and link sent. Check your PM.

I thought I knew a lot, but I had no idea about some of that historic stuff. I also always appreciate Dave's ability, honed from decades of covering Pro Wrestling no doubt, to sniff out works and bullshit stories when he does these long pieces too.

LOL @ this shit Forrest is saying to Ariel Heiwani in an interview:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMzM9-VrQSs&feature=player_embedded#at=16

A little over 4:00 in talks about how much he hates being there and he hates people and wants to go home lol.

Then about the last two minutes discussing TV shows. He's one um .. weird dude.
Hope he's still in the mood to tell jokes when he's laying on a stretcher sucking oxygen tomorrow night.
