UFC 165 |OT| ABBA a little faith in Gustafsson

I've seen fights where judges clearly gave a guy credit for his ability to stuff takedowns, and as a Jones fan, I thought that gave Gus to edge in a ridiculously close fight. These judges obviously didn't see it that way

I just noticed Dave Meltzer had it 49-46 for Bones Jones too, and he knows the sport better than any of us.

And JDS is a retard -- there's no champion's advantage in the Ultimate.

Jones' boxing was exposed hard tonight.

JDS takes him out at HW imo

Bones is never fighting JDS. If he has a heavyweight fight sometime in the future it will be some sideshow bullshit like Anderson/Irvin or Anderson/Bonnar. Can you say Bones/Schaub?

Also most MMA fighters' boxing sucks. Like someone else mentioned guys like Gus that can give Bones fits like this don't just grow off trees.

DAVE MELTZER DOESN'T KNOW SHIT. HE NEEDS TO GO BACK TO WRESTLING. Dana White even style'd on his ass

Gus gave everything he had and proved the haters wrong. But Jones is the champion for a reason: he's just too damn good.

Gus will be back. 2-3 solid wins and we'll see him fight for the title again. I just hope he doesn't have a post-Jonesing slump like Rashad or Bader.

That said, if Jones tries this "beat him at his own game" shit with Glover he's going to get his face rearranged. Then after that fight we've got Phil Davis to look forward to. After that? Gus might have another chance (due to there being no-one else.)

What a great fight, whenever it's that close it always goes to the champ, just how it goes. Was hoping Gus could pull it off but Jones finished really strong and did enough to retain. (Barely)

I guarantee something is up with his toe that basically came off of his body not too long ago.

People like you are morons.

Jones took all the shots Gus could give him ... as Gus took a ton of a big shots from Jones.

You ever have a compound fracture? I'm no pro athelete but I've had one ... I felt that shit for a good year and a half even though it was "healed" long before that.

Whatever. I have had plenty of fractures and breaks. Your point hardly makes sense if it was injured again heis still fucked up on his face, toe and probably his legs.

I think those jabs really fucked up Jones and he was unable to finish off his takedowns because of that damage. In the next fight, he won't eat so many jabs and will be able to Ground/Pound Gustafsson in the middle rounds.

But, this is the UFC, I'm sure one of these guys will slip up in a 'warm up' fight and we will never see a rematch.

GUS 1,2,3 THATS IT. Finishing strong doesn't mean shit. We go by rounds dammit

Rogan's commentary was definitely in favor of Gus. Not that it was on purpose, but commentators do it all the time. He was so excited that someone was giving jones a fight. Combine that with all the people that hate Jones (plus a 49-46), and your going to have a bunch of complaining on the internet. It was a close fight, could have went either way. When it's that close I tend to side with the champ.

Had Gus been the long reigning champ, he probably would've gotten the decision without much controversy. Still would've been close enough for a rematch though.

Guys just remembering that in a close decision the champion keeps the belt because the challenger must have a clear victory to win the fight

FUCK YOU JUNIOR, GUS WON THAT FIGHT

This surmises so much of the responses here.

It was a close fight. Gus was working that Mayweather strat hard but gassed and you can't Mayweather a fight AND Gas and expect to WIN. #Truthfact

Add to that, it looks absolutely horrible to straight up turn around and run away from your opponent, takedown defense or not. At least stuff the thing first for the judges sake. People are quick to call sidestepping and walking it out "getting on your bike" but Gus REALLY defined "getting on your bike" at least twice tonight.

Mike White at Sherdog and MMAJunkie had it 49-46 for Bones Jones too. When this score is showing up on so many different cards, you have to at least accept that maybe it's within the realm of possibility.

Seeing how all your weight is on your fucking foot / toes when you walk ... it makes a lot of sense.

Both of their faces were fucked up ... dunno what you're talking about. Jones had a cut over his eye from a glancing punch and a swollen lip from the jabs ...

Gus had a black eye ... a big gash in his hair from that elbow (which if it hit him square it would have obliterated his face) ... and another cut under his right eye.

Best fight in a while. Leave it at that.

Gus will be a champion someday ... just not tonight.

that's odd. 2nd round was a copy/paste of the first, what made you pick Bones?

Hard to say really, as far as decisive strikes go I didn't think it was copy/past.

Felt after that round both fighters had let loose, thought Jones landed more convincingly.

Could it have gone either way? Yeah, guess I saw more improvement out of Jones that swayed my view.

Yeah that running was pretty ridiculous.

Fuck that noise.

Jones - Gustafsson 2 in January/February

Glover - Davis in December for #1 contender

DC can fight someone like Lil Nog to see if he can get a quality, top 10 win at LHW before being mentioned in a title shot.

Gus was straight up Tour De France in those last few rounds. Bones put him on Freddie Mercury Avenue and in return Gus got on his https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GugsCdLHm-Q

People are overrating the chance that heavyweights have against Jones. None of them box as well as Gus and no one in the division has the speed and quickness he has.

WHAT BOXING? 95% of the shit Bones threw were kicks/elbows

His defense though. Turns away from any strong punch etc

I can see Jones getting it on volume of kicks but it was clear Gustafsson dictated the striking outside of the big elbow and one big head kick. Seems like Jones throws his kicks more karate style and doesn't have too much power in them like he does with his knees.

I wouldn't be if I were you. Jones hasn't gone for a quick finish in awhile. I think he feels like he's already established his dominance and would rather get a bit of a workout and give the fans something to watch. The only way I see Jones trying to end this faster than usual is if he feels Gus is actually being a threat. I also think he'll use stand up unless/until he isn't getting the better of the exchanges.

Yup... I think that's pretty accurate in terms of Jones performance.

I had it 4-1 Jones as well. The first round I gave to Jones because it looked like he landed a lot of kicks. Is there a place with striking stats? PEACE.

You think those are fast hands after the fight we just saw? The only reason Gus could keep Jones off him is because he had the hand speed to hit him before the tie up. Cain is short, lacks reach, and doesn't have the hand speed to worry jones.

The fight...

that's slugging not Boxing. Even JDS (who I believe has the best Boxing Pedigree in the HW division) doesn't actually "Box" in the cage. Because it's risky as fuck with 4oz gloves.

It's more because most people dont build up amateur boxing experience in MMA. The whole hands up as an unbreakable rule of defense thing is a misunderstanding of boxing for example, though as we saw it's important for other things like head kicks.

Most MMA guys would get killed in high level kickboxing or boxing.

And AG was successful not only with hand speed but head movement and positioning. AG didn't need to actually block with his upper body at all until the elbows/knees started coming -- he'd just duck or slip and counter.
