You can want to be ruled by the SNP without wanting to leave the union and crash your economy.

To be fair, we're headed towards an economic crash regardless of whether we're in the union or not.

I'll be more interested to see the region breakdown.

25% turnout is, obviously, a good indicator of how well our democracy is functioning right now.

Eh, nobody cares about Local Elections is really the take away from it. Surprised the Lib Dems are losing in so many places though, this is what I always thought was their strong point.

It's either bin collection reductions or people with dementia getting less care, bluntly put. Councils don't have much else of choice, blue or red (or yellow or pale yellow or purple or uh... Plaid are orange and green?). You need to march on Westminster if you want councils to have the budgets not to be shit.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'd go and dump all my rubbish in Parliament Square then (I believe this has been done before).

Looks the Tories are currently only one seat behind the SNP in Aberdeenshire. There's still two more undeclared district results, but it's possible that they may become the largest party in Aberdeenshire.

Labour, 1, Jesus Christ. The GE is going to be a bloodbath.

I honestly don't see what Labour have to gain by pretending these aren't that bad.

It's fucking embarrassing.

Just wait for Corbyn speaking on the subject.

"It's not me, it's you"
"Media conspiracy"
"We didn't get wiped out, so we did better than expected"
"I believe we have a real case to put forward to the public"
"I was voted in twice by Labour members, so it's clear that my position going into the election is strong"

Going to make a prediction that Labour will have zero seats in Scotland after the General Election.

John Curtice makes a projection...
CON: 38% (+3)
LAB: 27% (-2)
LDEM: 18% (+7)
UKIP: 5% (-8)

(via John Curtice)
Chgs. w/ 2015.

Very good results for the LDs, even though their seats went down, which is just due to the Tories hoovering up those UKIP votes.

I can't be sure if the people round Corbyn know it's bad and are putting a brave face on it, or just all part of the greater plan for what they want Labour to be, or are just plain delusional?

I guess there's got to be an element delusion if they've not made any major changes in strategy. I saw a tweet that Corbyn is thinking there wasn't enough activity on the doorsteps as the reason? Hm.

Should somebody just create new new Labour and marginalise the shit show of Corbyn backed Labour.

I don't think he will quit after the election, the members will just hope the Tories ruin enough lives that they'll see the light eventually. They don't care how long it takes.

It's simple. There's just a massive amount of right wing cunts in England. They vote for other right wing cunts. Occasionally Labour will convince enough of the right wing cunts that they are convincing enough right wing cunts to be the right wing cunts in charge, normally that only happens when the current right wing cunts in charge become such massive right wing cunts that the right wing cunts who vote them in say "I know we're right wing cunts, but we're not that right wing, cunts"

You know that using the British Electoral Study academics has done studies that show that people in England don't hold more right-wing views than people in Scotland or Wales? In terms of opinions towards welfare, authoritarian vs libertarian etc they are all basically indistinguishable. Interestingly, the Scots are much worse at judging what the views of their compatriots are than the English or Welsh!

Ravenscraig, which homed Ravenscraig Steelworks which good old Maggie decimated has elected a Tory.

Sheesh.

So how bad are things looking for the UK? Is this a Trump level disaster for the country?

The GE will decide that, but this is a sign the UK voters will most certainly be getting out in numbers to vote Conservative in the GE, and seemingly be incredibly happy and proud about it.

At this point I can't help but think that Corbyn (or perhaps more importantly McDonnell) see the decimation of the Labour party as being collateral damage in their creation of a socialist political party in the UK.

I fully expect him to stay on after the election, which will - in the best case scenario - make Labour unelectable until 2027. In the worst case they will never be elected into any power again in the UK without some kind of electoral reform or partnership with Greens & LDs, which would cloud the waters anyway.

We are seeing the rapid death of the Labour party in the UK.

So how bad are things looking for the UK? Is this a Trump level disaster for the country?

No, the Conservatives are a mainstream political party, even if they do have some loonies. The far-right in the UK was wiped out of the electoral calculus last night. It's pretty much the only positive.

The talking heads are just protecting Corbyn, and by extension themselves. Plenty of labour officials, workers, voters and activists talking about how bad it is.

Trump is for 4/8 years, but Brexit is forever

If we're just talking about the election we'll end up with the same people in charge who are right now, but with a larger majority. In practice as the opposition is so weak, nothing much'll change

The only positive for me is that they are going to have their hands full dealing with leaving the EU for a while.

Very good results for the LDs, even though their seats went down, which is just due to the Tories hoovering up those UKIP votes.

Those are the changes from the 2015 GE, not from the last council elections. Liberal Democrats always do better in council elections, so it's not a meaningful comparison. The relevant comparison is the 2013 Local Elections, for which the national extrapolation was:

LAB 29%
CON 25%
UKIP 23%
LDEM 14%

This time was:

CON: 38% (+13)
LAB: 27% (-2)
LDEM: 18% (+4)
UKIP: 5% (-18)

There's a mild Liberal Democrat recovery, but, well, we can see the real story.

There is no way Corbyn survives if this translates in to an equally bad GE performance. I think he would want to somehow pass his support on to somebody capable of winning, and I think the more sensible who support him now - not the more rabid Corbynistas - will see the writing on the wall in terms of how the English electorate thinks. If he loses badly, he goes.

So how bad are things looking for the UK? Is this a Trump level disaster for the country?

You say this, but they're not truly wiped out if their objectives have been subsumed in to the cultural zeitgeist and their supporters have been actively courted by the governing party. They've lost seats, but their ideas have never been more alive.

And I would disagree. This is the beginning of a major disaster for this country. I think we're going to see constitutional crises the likes of which we've never seen before, divisions we've never seen before. Whoever wins in June will be carrying the poison pill of victory.

It won't come to that. Corbyn and his supporters will become marginalized after this defeat.

I think the reason he won the second leadership challenge was a combination of Owen Smith having the charisma of a flannel and the sense that he was being stitched up without being given a chance. That won't happen again.

If the number of Labour MPs really drops to 110ish then a Corbynite successor will probably be able to get on the ballot,I expect he may stand aside then. Otherwise he will cling on. The Labour leadership care more about preparing for the next leadership contest than they do about winning the general election.

Right now it is difficult to say if the membership will still support the Corbynites IMO. It depends who stands as leader against them and what they are offering the membership. I think they'd make mince meat of someone like Yvette Cooper for example.

If you like the Conservatives, things are pretty great!

More like if you have plenty money and only care about yourself, things are pretty great.

It's mind-boggling watching the lower/middle-class voters, especially in England almost view voting Conservative as a badge to show their status/wealth.... but who you vote for doesn't really decide that as such, it's your bank balance and ability to survive/eat/support your family. The people you vote for (Conservatives) don't give a fuck about you the days after an election when you're knee deep in debt, crying out for help and/or struggling with your health because you can't afford private health-care. You vote for them anyway because better keep that elitist narrative alive that you are a Tory, your family is Tories and so forth.

Conservatives aren't a for the people party, that's supposed to be Labour. It doesn't seem to matter how much reality pie some eat, instead of looking at their chosen side of support it's blaming the immigrants/blame those poorer than me/blame whatever the Daily Mail tells us to blame.

Fucking Labour. Just copy some of the SNPs passion for equality, care for the sick/poor/disabled, inclusiveness of anyone is welcome to live in Scotland/UK, anti-austerity and so forth. Mix that in with a decent leader and actually attack the Tories instead of their wishy-washy opposition and in the North attempt at out Unionist-ing the Tories. Which was never going to happen. The whole party needs a clear out.

UKIP: Election results are "pretty poor"

I've just had my second Lib Dem leaflet in as many weeks, so that's already double the amount of literature they sent out in 2015. Must have a few quid in the bank from that expanded membership. We didn't even have council elections here.

Even Aaron Banks thinking he can come back later in the year with a new party is deluded.

It's over, go join the Conservatives or the EDL.

I was thinking you would be alright as they try and make brexit look successful and throw more cash around. But then a big majority will probably be taken as a green light for a good fisting.

The property market imploding is probably the only thing which could actually hurt the Tories electorally.

The collapse of Labour.

It's not fair to compare to 2012/13 (nations '12, England '13) as such either - that was not a GE year.

It's a good Lib Dem recovery with more to do to ensure we can begin to win properly at election time again, a *horrendous* result for Labour which can only be lain at the feet of Corbyn, and the nationalists - the Tories, Plaid and the SNP - all doing very well.
