Oh fuck the haters, give em a chance eh?

"I HATE CLEGG"
"FUCK THE LDs"
"BRITAIN IS DEAD"
"NOT VOTING NEXT TIME"

They've been in power for about 3 hours, Labour had 13 years.

The five year term thing doesn't erase the possibility for a vote of no confidence during that time surely?

BBC sources suggesting Danny Alexander to be Scottish Secretary. Obviously want to try and win over some support in Scotland.

I think it basically removes the ability of the PM to call an election when he/she wants and sets the term to a fixed 5 years, it does nothing to affect votes of no confidence and whatnot.

So Tories for 4 years, no chance of another vote in a year or whatever? Not really keeping up with how this all works out.

It's fair to say my family were poor under the last Tory reign.. bad times ahead?

Not necessarily.

The 5 years is there to stop the Tories blaming all the bad shit on the Lib Dems and calling a snap election in the next year in an attempt to get a landslide.

Basically, it's going to have to work between the two, for better or worse. There's going to be no cut and run here.

More from the BBC:

- Rise on capital gains tax not related to business in order to increase funds for raising the income tax threshold.

best thing so far. the rightwing base are going to be pissed.

Lib Dems have agreed to the vague and unworkable Immigration Cap.
To be fair, it's electorally popular. I doubt Labour will campaign in 2015 to repeal it - they'll need all the support they can get from their core working-class base.

Coming from the Sun, I don't think they know the meaning of that reference. :lol

Looks like their standing infront of the TARDIS.

"Right get those fuckers at the BBC, fuck David Tennant for slagging me off in the run up!"

That's personally upset me a little bit, as it is unworkable and will lead to humiliation of the Government.

But we have to remember that it's almost certain that the LibDem vote collapsed because of immigration and the Euro. It doesn't surprise me one bit.

Cheers for clearing this up.

What I am particularly interested in is the role of the Deputy Prime Minister. Gordon Brown abolished the official post, and John Prescott was more often than not overshadowed by Chancellor Gordon Brown on matters of domestic policy.

I wonder if the DPM will have more of a powerful status, like that of Vice President in the USA. Will Clegg officially become PM when Cameron is out of the country?

But it can't work. You can't cap legal immigrants from Europe (because Brussels says so) and you can't cap illegal immigrants as the cap for them is already set at Zero, yet here they are.

All you can do is cap legal immigrants from non-EU nations, all of whom are accountable to the state anyway thanks to the mountain of paperwork they need to get here and stay here.

By 2015 the whole thing would have been exposed for the joke it really is.

I think they will pick up a lot of support from the Lib Dems next time, "A vote for the Lib Dems is a vote for the Tories" is going to have a lot more resonance now with the anti-Tory vote.

Lib Dems are now in the greatest position to influence policy in a 100 years and it's a "betrayl"? Were you under the impression that Cameron wouldn't get into number 10 without them? Stupid delusional class war morons.

Without the Lib Dems the Tories would have had to have formed a minority government, a few months of that & the Tory party would have plenty of damage to Cameron.

...and plenty of damage to the Lib Dems, who would've been accused of putting party ideology over the national interest and basically being childish.

They were really in a no-win situation.

yep, forcing him rightwards to hold onto power. so when the tories got a majority six months later after blaming the left for destroying the chances of a stable government, we'd get an even nastier tory majority unchecked by the lib dems.

To be honest, it doesn't really have to work. It's generally more important for governments to be seen as doing something about the issue of immigration which will placate a section of the electorate that, rightly or wrongly, has concerns about immigration. I would prefer this than a BNP MP in parliament or gaining council seats because whether one likes it or not, immigration has always been one of those issues that continually has a poisonous role in politics. Look at the Arizona law in the states, most countries have this problem. At least the government can say, "look we've listened to your concerns and have done something about it".

But if it fails, which it will, you're opening up to the far right anyway because there are no alternatives left for the "moderate racists".

Well I am hoping that the electorate will be pacified by the cap on immigration because there is no step further you can take after that - other than a complete halt. And most polling seem to suggest that only a very tiny minority wants that while a majority thinks that controlled immigration is beneficial to the country.

Any party should be able to spin voting on the merits of each bill rather than voting to avoid votes of no confidence, I see no real benefits for the Lib Dems long term( obviously have to wait and see what cabinet posts they get, my bet is fairly junior ones) any success will be attributed to the Tories, any failed policies will be due to the Lib Dems watering them down.

Ahh but the Tories would be blaming Cameron for this(see Tebbit when the Lib-Lab coalition looked possible)

So, there's a bloody good chance of this LibCon coalition working well. Seems like Vince Cable has got himself a damn fine role there.

But is there a chance, that, the old fogies of the LibDems will feel most of the deal is no good in the long run, and the old fogies' of the Con will feel that the LibDems are "holding them back..."?

Either way, it's going to be a fun 5 years! :lol

The Tory immigration policy is shit, the Tory marriage tax is shit, and the Tory policy on benefit cheats is shit, none of them will work, and they are all put in place to placate the Daily Mail readers.

Deal officially approved by the Lib Dems completely unanimously (excluding one member of the federal executive).

Coalition is a-go. Statement from Clegg in 15-20mins time.

Paddy's statement :lol :lol

At the end of the day, we have the steadiest hands in Westminster guiding Osbourne through the recession!

Congrats to my man Vince Cable! :lol

On Europe, the Lib Dems have agreed to support the Tory plan to introduce legislation saying that any future transfers of power to the EU would have to be approved by the people in a referendum.

The coalition has also agreed not to join the euro.

I'm surprised by this concession, but completely welcome it. Looks like Britain is entering a period of direct democracy with referendums being called more often - changing the voting system, future transfers of power etc.

With people realising they can't afford to vote for a 3rd party if they want a lasting government and it goes back to choosing between just Lab and Con.

Which is why this isn't that bad of a deal, open the minds of the public and show them that coalition governments are superior as they generally represent more voters compared to a non-coalition government.

Did you guys really think he was going to join with Labour? I can't think it was anything more than a bartering point with the Tories. The "rainbow coalition" would've been disasterous. Who would have led it? Train wreck all over it.

What's Mundell doing then? I'd like to think that the only Tory MP in Scotland would get a decent job.
