A government in a democracy 6 months from an election has to deal with the main talking points at hand.

Cameron is pro EU, the measures that are being announced are sensible and nullify some of the loudest concerns.

I'm sorry but there are negative sides to the free movement of people as well as positive. It's delusional to think that there aren't.

A Tory minister made a joke speech about animal welfare in the House of Commons in order to say an obscene word after accepting a dare from Navy pals.

Communities Minister Penny Mordaunt accepted the childish dare at a dinner with her friends in the Royal Marines.

She managed to say the words c**k and laid several times and mentioned the names of officers during the debate on poultry welfare.

Her speech was broadcast on TV earlier this year and recorded in Hansard, Parliament's official reporting of debates in the House of Commons.

Heh, he was actually talking about WW2. He mentioned that Dublin city centre looks basically the same now as it did 150 years ago in terms of the road layouts and architecture, because where a lot of European cities got bombed to the ground during WW2, Dublin didn't. He then said that when you're looking around, you may agree that maybe that wouldn't have been the worst opportunity for them to have had.

I'm wrecked. Dublin has destroyed me.

Oh, right~! That's so very true. Unfortunately, not getting bombed does have more disadvantages than you'd think. It's awfully dirty and boring, for instance. And really not very easy to drive around, too. :c Anyways, next time you're in Ireland, go to Donegal instead. You'll enjoy it. If you like beer, then don't worry. There is one in every hamlet. Oh, and don't go to the Temple Bar.

We didn't go to Temple but we did end up in this place called Palace (or maybe The Palace) where they had an indoor golf machine where you swing a real club at a real ball in front of a projector and cameras pick up the speed. We played it for, I'm not kidding, about 6 hours whilst drinking whiskey.

And this is a work trip, too.

Tories promising £2 billion extra for the NHS, Balls comes on air to say Labour would put more in no matter what Tories promise.

Fucking sick or this oneupmanship bullshit and using the NHS as a political football. It needs proper reform, care and perhaps some radical reform especially in terms of cancer detection and mental health. It being 'weaponised' means no one wins.

Yep - the NHS shouldn't have been ringfenced from the cuts. Problem is that doing what is needed to actually fix the NHS is beyond either party as it's political suicide.

So you'll see it continue to be used as a political football, and its budgets to never be sorted, and both parties making stupid changes to the system that just increase cost, and the problem will never be fixed.

(Seriously though, the Tories current set of changes are a freaking disaster that try to defy the basic laws of economics. we've been down this road before with GP commissioners and localised health care commissioning, and it was a mess, and now we're repeating the same stupid mistake because of ideology).

So it seems there's a three-line-whip vote scheduled for after the autumn statement which, at least as of last night, even the whips didn't know what it was about. The Speccie's guess was that it would be a bill to legislate the reduction of the deficit by 2018. It can't bind future parliaments, natch, but if it passes they would need to then repeal it next parliament, and if it doesn't pass it'll sort of take a lot of the sting out of their "Osborne hasn't dealt with the deficit" arguments because they'll have just voted against a bill that forces them to reduce it.

Politics politics politics. This is all the game that basically doesn't affect anything tangible, but it does sound fun.

They are, at the same time, enabling the line they should be fighting (Labour wrecked the economy, the tories are trying to fix it), and at the same time raising the inevitable question of "would labour balance them?".

It's stupid, personality driven attack politics that actually undermines them and any message they hope to have on the economy. Utter drivel and entirely to be expected from Ed Balls.

Apparantly house purchases just shy of £1m will pay well, anything over will pay more.

And it seems this is the vote I mentioned above (though it's happening tomorrow).

Can Labour really vote against a bill that lowers tax for 98% of house purchases and raises it for the top 2%?

Stamp duty is lower for properties costing less than about £850k. It's a progressive tax now which makes a lot more sense, however, 12% for over £1.5m is an eye watering rate.

Pretty similar to the changes the SNP have brought in, although their pivot point was £325k (which is a reflection of the house prices up here)

Of course when the SNP announced it the Scottish Tory's called it an attack on aspiration.

Interestingly enough from the Autumn statements data, limiting EU migrants from getting Jobseekers allowance will save a whopping £15 million per year. It probably cost more for the various politicians talking about it than it'll save.

JSA has never been a big deal, it is in-work benefits like WTC, CTC and housing benefit that is the killer, EU workers make up about 5% of the workforce and receive around 9% of in work benefits aiui.

What I don't get is that I thought Labour were committed to getting rid of the defecit, same as the Tories, but their line was that that they wouldn't make the cuts as quickly. "Too deep, too fast" - something like that.

Today Osborne said he's going to miss his target of getting rid of the defecit by next year and I hear Chucka Umunna on the radio giving him grief for it.

If Labour were planning to cut less deep and less quickly, wouldn't they be even further behind on getting rid of the defecit??

Wasn't Labour's plan something about spending their way out of the deficit rather than cutting their way out?

Jobseekers is harder to con, it's much easier to pretend you are working when you aren't and milk the system.

Just saw the Stamp Duty changes. Initially used a calculator that was incorrect and had a shock (I want to move next year to a property valued between 250k and 270k).

Seen the new charge now. Much happier.

Really like this change.

Pretty stoked for this. Found out last night because I haven't officially finalised my flat purchase (moving in next Friday, sealing the deal tomorrow) I will be under the new rules.

My stamp duty is going from £1,275 to £50. So yeah, pretty massive.

Then it changes again in April when Scotland gets it's own stamp duty replacement. I almost forgive my lawyer for leaving this so damn late!

I'm still pretty interested in how the deficit is being reduced. They're awfully evasive on saying how much the cuts have worked, and how much of the money was paid towards lowering the deficit. Future's getting pretty bleak for me, Cameron... Can't you just pay the other countries and go back to normal, or what?
