UMVC3: Phoenix Wright and Nova Revealed!

Really impressed with many of the buffs given to numerous Marvel characters. I really wished Iron Man had his older tri-jump but even then he looks more than solid now. There should've been more listed changes to Storm, MODOK and Shuma... especially Shuma but oh well.

What I expect from Capcom's side:

*Long list of changes for Dante and Zero. Ranging from buffs and nerfs. Wesker and Amaterasu will be getting a mix of both as well.

*Buffs to everyone except Jill and Viper. These 2 will most likely stay mostly the same.

*Hsien Ko, Arthur and Haggar not buffed enough and pretty much the same stuff that has been discovered already

*Chun Li actually gets solid buffs.

*Most buffed characters include Ryu, Chris, V Joe, Felicia and Trish.


Oh and just a heads up but EventHubs has fixed their Sentinel point. It is apparently super armor on air normals not nerfing of the launcher.

Which IMO was the wrong direction to go, they should have made it so she was more viable in normal mode and just having DP as a nice little bonus.

Designing a character around not wanting to use her, turtling with ur other characters and then switching her out so you can wtfpwn the whole other team is just really really dumb. Ultimate was their chance to fix this, but instead they decided to nerf her in way that encourages you to use her even less until you got ur five bars.

But then again, a DP nerf is at least better than leaving her as she was.

Especially when considering non-DP Phoenix was more viable than a good 80% of the cast, if you ignored her health.

But now its almost an excuse to never even put her out all all, unless you have 5 meters, you're pretty much dead in the water if you have a 3-4 meter phoenix an no other characters alive.

Just my 2 bits, I think it inhibits creativity with about 50% of what that character actually is.
Thing is, if you choose to play how you play Phoenix, non-DP, you aren't using her full potential, so why balance an underperforming playstyle? Sure they could've left regular as is and just nerfed DPs air actions and whatnot, but much of it is to combat the lame game, which other GAFers mentioned too, ends up being part of Phoenix play as a direct result of the existence of DP.

It's like Dante creativity being nerfed along with hitstun. MvC3 was a combo video maker's dream, and the unintentional nature of that was that some stuff was broken or bullshit. Therefore, balance is a necessity that comes before swag combos. I'm sure Dante will still be boss in UMvC3 though, just... less.

A lot of the stuff in the eventhubs Marvel list is completely new or undiscovered, right?

What are the chances that we'll see many more unexpected changes from Capcom's list?

its hardly free and certainly not better than a divekick or trijump (or teleport if you wanna go that far). of course, speaking in terms of vanilla; i'd have to see how it fares in umvc3. certainly if webzip was indeed spideys best tool in vanilla, then why do they feel the need to buff it so much in umvc3?

Oh noes... Spider Man lost a touch of death combo. Cue smallest violin.

Not to hate but no matter the character, having an unscaled 100K special move that you can loop or a pretty much guaranteed reset is over powered. It was gonna get taken out even if Spider Man was the worst character in the game.
who said i'm complaining? like i said, i have no doubt spidey will be a good chara, but to say hes better in umvc3 is too soon at this point without testing how good webzip is (since he lost a lot of things as well; buffs vs nerfs).

certainly his transition into umvc3 is not like thors where he received only buffs (afaik).

are there any umvc3 gameplay vids of spidey out there?

Today is "only the green costume is good" day.

X-23 costumes suck cause they're barely differentiable at a glance. They should have altered skin colour. I know you want to be referential but honestly sometimes it's better to go for specific palette direction.

Tl;dr give me a bunch of sexy brown girl alts.

I really don't like that one for some reason, was disappointed the actress on Assist Me emulated that one and not one of the others. Some okay additions but nothing too spectacular. I'll be sticking to my yellow/black X-23.
 
So is Sentinel back at "Thank God for the Machine" status with his new super armor? That's huge. Is it only normals or specials as well? Super armored FASTER Rocket Punch. OMG

Soooooo...

I'm about 95% sure that Morrigan is falling off my team now too. What characters would you guys recommend to complement Ammy and Nova?

My team order will most likely be like this:
Ammy/???/Nova
Ammy/Nova/???

An assist that helps Ammy's rushdown and beads game is really important so I'm thinking beams and psuedo beams, but I need the character to be strong against rushdown and super armor. I'm thinking that Chris, Dr.Doom, Strider or Ghost Rider could fill that spot nicely. Stuff like THC capabilities, DHC strength, point play and anchor strength all matter here.

If you are removing morrigan cause she can't block while air dashing you should remove ammy too.
 
I like the blue and the green. Didn't care for any of X-23's alts in vanilla, so I stuck to the default then.

All of Hsien-Ko's alts are boring...shame they can't be bothered to try for her colors any more than with her gameplay.
 
Oh as for shuma's changes, Chaos Dimension might become the strongest level 3 in the game cause of that mash damage change "might"

Jump S change will prob just make it so you can't infinite assist with it anymore.

His throw being faster.... uh okay the throw sucks unless they gave him some consistent way to otg off it or increased the range there is no point.

Ken colors would work better with his DLC costume is they weren't so lame as to not give extra colors for them :/

Sent got super armored air normals, lost them, then got them again and now lost again. Also, the launcher got nerfed pretty hard too.

What a roller coaster.

Presumably it's just an additional button press (H) after a Quick Work for a nice wall bounce. That will allow you to combo off it much more easily, so that's a pretty big buff. And yeah Mad Wheel is the overhead.

- Health changed to 900,000.
- Changed S. Launcher properties from Hyper Armor to Super Armor.
- Opponent's untechable time after a Rocket Punch has been decreased.


So he can be hit out of his launcher now...and players recover faster after the rocket punches...and less life. I also don't see the part about his assist being nerfed -- ie it is now a blockstring vs staggered hits.

I don't see those nerfs as being too serious. One hit of armor is enough for the launcher to go through most things it would actually be used as an anti-air on (that's about all it's good for). The health is barely different at all, and the Rocket Punch change really only affects his corner game, where it will prevent him from getting an extra hyper (you couldn't really link Plasma Storm after it mid-screen anyway). That sucks, but it's not the worst and can probably be replaced by the more execution-heavy technique of tiger kneeing multiple Hard Drives.
 
Just checked in to see the fully translated changelog.

Our translators got pretty much everything right except for a few details (like that Sentinel launcher nerf lol). Editing now.

Some of it was new and undiscovered yes. And I am still confident that the changelog left out some other finer details on the characters.

I'd also like to draw attention to the difference between hyper armor and super armor. IIRC, hyper armor grants invincibility for the duration of the move, e.g. Sentinel's standing S can go through pretty much anything (eat that, Tron!). Super armor grants armor against a limited number of hits, so if it's got one hit of super armor then your character can get hit one time with impunity during the move.
