I remember when MvC3 was first announced and wish lists were being generated daily, a lot of choices I saw on lists were somewhat obscure characters that people only liked because they grew attached to them in MvC2. They may have never played the character's original game or picked up a comic with them, but they became fans of the character. Strider may be the best example of this. Tons of style and a fun move set, but the majority of people who requested him for the roster probably never touched a Strider game in their life.
My choice for MvC3 character is Dormammu. Never knew anything about him before, but he is a fantastic addition. I would be bummed if MvC4 didn't have him in it.
I feel compelled to say Spencer too, but he was actually on my wish list for this game, so I don't know if that exactly counts. (Interestingly enough, my wish list was into the double digits and almost every character made it in - including a couple that I considered long shots!).

Also of note, though not really important: The Japanese MvC3 site lists that the event's build will only have 10 of the new playable characters, and no Shuma/Jill. So pretty much, Rocket Raccoon and Frank West were not playable, only had trailers shown at the conference.

Yeah, it's a double edged sword really. You grow really attached to new, left field additions of characters and then BAM removed from next iteration. Kind of why I expressed that I don't want a MvC4 unless MvC becomes a platform that keeps all of the characters going forwards. The Dormammu/Umar relationship is hilarious. Umar is very conniving and backstabbing, and Dormammu is oddly sentimental and loving toward her. She has conned him several times by telling him how much she loves him as a brother, and he's so touched he overlooks her dastardly nature.
Pretty much the whole cast aside from the non-superpowered characters. I'm not a fan of gunslingers.
