I think average game time might even be longer. There's 2-3 people playing who are already past the 14 hour mark and not even close to finished yet. Given that the speed run trophy is for 6 hours (the other games being closer to 3), I'm confident it's going to be a really meaty campaign.

Yeah you are right, I edited. Most important part from the impressions though :p
Gameplay is fantastic. Shooting now has a weight to it and the freedom of how you tackle encounters feels great.

We kinda already knew this from the beta, but definitely good to hear

More like a 7.

7 or lower from Polygon.

lol lolygon

Polygon will give it a 6

Polygon won't review it because it's too good.

So who's gonna give it the 7?

Definitely gonna be Polygon

Can't wait for the 6.5/10 review from Polygon

Uncharted 4 Review Thread | A. Gies's End

People expecting universal 10s might be a bit too overzealous. This is the fourth game in an established franchise. It might be a 10 for a lot of us, but I think reviewers have become far more critical.

It's very hard to redefine a genre by this point. However, I do think reviews will outline how Naughty Dog have effectively pushed the narrative, visual, and story telling devices in modern games. Depending on how important that is to a reviewer will ultimately decide it's score.

Still though - I'm shocked and amazed at just how important and influential Naughty Dog has become to gaming as a whole. They truly are a league of their own.

We live in a post single player campaign world where unified experiences and multi-player rule the roost. I love how ND keeps leading the charge on a foundation that is lost on so many developers today.

What's ND's position about people streaming the multiplayer before release? Is it okay after the review embargo (assuming it will be unlocked by then) ?
I think they won't allow streaming until release day based off this:
It's actually May 5 at 12:01 AM PT.

Footage, screens, and such is under embargo until release day.

I honestly think this is going to be the highest rated game this gen. The general consensus seems to be that the game is unreal and just from my own personal opinion, it is looking like Naughty Dog's best game. Also the pedigree behind it with Bruce and Neil. I am thinking of a 94+ metacritic.

What a day for me. Persona 5 news and Uncharted 4 reviews. On top of that I have huge personal things.

Anyways my MC prediction is somewhere around 86-89. I think a lot of reviews will be hard on this game, 4th in the series etc.

Is it possible for a reviewer to legitimately think the game deserves less than a 9/10 without it being a conspiracy or eliciting faux "meltdowns"?
I know Polygon scoring low is a sometimes-true meme, but the mentality here is crazy.

e: In other words, is it at all possible that a publication would score this less than a 8 or 9 and people here view the reasons as legitimate, or no matter the reason would people be upset?

Yeah I'm expecting mid 90s myself. Even if I'm not the biggest uncharted fan I can still see the game is looking really good.

Sony is so lucky to have a team like this under their wing. Whatever passion, creative energy, and philosophy these guys operate by- I wish it bled over to other development houses.

Naughty Dog is a big reason why I game today. Their games have been with me through some really rough periods. The guy on GAF talking about how each Uncharted release reflected an event in his life is similar to how I feel.

People really dislike Polygon for whatever reason. Just take a look at the Star Fox review thread. I've seen a lot of disdain for them in various review threads now.

The Phantom Pain is sitting at a 93.

Ah okay, guess I'm betting on 94 then! :)

Not the the place to discuss this in depth but people really do hate Polygon. In gaming culture even in my day-to-day life it's become an almost household name for a trashy journalistic outlet amoung students at my University. I think people view Kotaku similarly.

I think a lot of this is just people hating on the 'big corporations', like how they tend to hate Activision, EA and Ubisoft, but I also think Polygon has given people a lot of reasons to dislike their outlet too.

Becuase they have historically had some rather unfair criticisms and twisted logic when it comes to review things.

I'm fine with it, but a lot of people are over invested in the Metacritic sphere.

I think it's because they stereotypically do seem to often rate things lower than average, but even ignoring Polygon, from this thread it sounds like it is impossible for any publication to rate the game lower than an 8 and have their opinion be viewed as reasonable.

Looking forward to the game and the meltdowns surrounding the metacritic. Low 90s seem about right at this point, unless this hits harder in both story and varied combat.

That wall of shame tho...UC3 wasn't even as good as UC2.

If the game is basically the latest demo with it's you can 'stealth the whole level' (but you can't) Edge is giving this an 8 going by their preview. I'm sure Edge will acknowledge the changes to the gameplay from the PS3 games and it will nudge its way to a 9.

I can't imagine it's going to get 10s across the board though, unless it is radically different, or the story is the best in videogames.

They're going to show their ass.

I'm not.

Where I'm from showing your ass isn't a good thing. It's basically trying to go all out, but screwing up and embarrassing yourself. I don't think that is what you meant.

Also seeing a lot of higher 90s....you guys sure? I mean reviewers have taken the gloves off, couple that with the final entry in a series and a self described divisive ending and I gotta keep the 87-92 range. Fallout 4, Witcher 3 and DA:I have taught me lessons this gen take heed.

The Last of Us was a new IP and hence the universal praise. I don't think Uncharted 4 will get the same meta as The Last of Us. I expect score in line with Bloodborne/The Witcher 3 than Uncharted 2 or GTA V. Still pretty good and will be the top spot contender for GOTY depending on the rest of the releases this year.

Thanks to everyone who has summarized the early copy impressions. I'm so bloody excited. In terms of the game lengths posted: I wonder how long those people took to complete The Last of Us. I play games quite slow often...TLOU took me 20 hours. So maybe Uncharted 4 will be similar which would be amazing.

91 metacritic with an 8.5 from gamestop and an 8 from Gies and a 5 from some random site we don't know of

Either way should be one hell of a ride

With the amount of review outlets that are going to review this game, a few outlier scores wont be enough to pull the overall rating down.

This will be a fascinating game in terms of reviews. My general impression is that critics are entering the game a bit skeptical. The industry has moved further away from linear games since Uncharted 3. People also expect upgrading and crafting mechanics in basically everything these days. Plus I feel people are ready to pounce on any feeling of "been there, done that". Tomb Raider also came out recently and did very well. All things considered, the game has to be pretty fuckin' amazing not to disappoint people. I'll predict a 90 Metacritic.

Similar feelings here, both in terms of what I expect and also personally.
I'm expecting an impression of "it's more Uncharted great, and it looks amazing but haven't we've done this before?"
Will still review highly well though, cos I'm sure it'll be a good game.

Can't wait for "I just think (outlet that it gave it a 7) is a badly written review, and of course (outlet that gave it a 7) would be an outlier just for attention".

The review thread will sure be something.

Meltdowns incoming if this comes true

I'm more interested in Angry Joe's opinion tbh. I want to see how he reacts if the game really is so great that there are almost no negative can be found

He gave TLOU a very rare 10 (I think it's his 3rd or 4th game?), it's not like he is incapable of that if the game is nearly flawless.

If it's more of the same Uncharted as U3 was I think we will see low 90s, high 80s. Many were disappointed that U3 was just raising the stakes on set pieces and little else

Two things I think people really want:

1) More freedom and clear growth in how the game plays to feel succinctly different from the last few

2) Some genuine depth to the story telling. Real stakes and real emotion. TLOU set such a high bar for this and U3 set such a low bar so it's hard to know where it will fall

It feels like the characters have been treading water for 3 games with no real growth or emotional stake. That's very much the popcorn vibe they have gone for, but as fans we want more

If it hits these as ND is capable of then we will see some big scores yet again
I'm pretty sure those points are what Naughty Dog focused on with this game. Those have been what they've talked about the most.

93-95. ND have got this game making business down to a formula at this point. All that's needed for high scores is refined gameplay with a couple new additions, good pacing. and a definitive ending to the franchise. The staples will be there. Character you love and those you love to hate. Over the top action sequences. Lite puzzles and exploration in gorgeous locales. And Drake bringing it all together.

Hope I didn't fuck up anything (except CT actually being CDT)

Reviewers seem to be a little harsher generally this gen and more prone to criticism of any perceived franchise fatigue, which I think will prevent many 10/10's.

I'm going to say the floor would be an 85 average, ceiling 96, and I'm personally betting on 93.

Let's say there is a reviewer who had to review Uncharted 2. Everyone is giving the game 9s & 10s. He hates the Nathan Drake character and the first game so gives it a 5 which is his honest subjective opinion - but is it right?

Subjective opinion of course makes up a big part of a review however another part is a proper appreciation of technical quality encompassing playability. So whilst a reviewer's feelings about a game will impact their score, they should also be able to review it critically and be able to convey it's qualities to readers, which should be reflected in the score, so they can make an informed decision.

From what I've heard from our reviewer, it is going to be among one of the GOATs.

We have a nice amount of impressions and 3 guys that talked with some of their journalists friends, all suggesting U2 level of reception here, which I think translate today to 92-93 at least, but I have some faith it can break that barrier and sit around 94-95 maybe, I'm sure most will think it's the best in the series regardless.

The Last of Us I predicted to get 96 and I ended up being one point off, so this time I'll predict 95 in the belief that the reverse will happen and Uncharted 4 actually gets 96. It's flawless logic.

I sure hope no one freaks out in tue review thread, that shit looks bad.

The desperate attempt to invalid any dissenting opinion isn't charming.

I'm thinking this will review poorly just because it's too gritty this time.

What do you consider poorly? Answer this knowing there is a different standard for a Naughty Dog game at this point in time compared to most of the industry. An 85 would be good for most games, but would be a motherfucking disaster for this game.

Don't care about individual scores, only the Metacritic average.
