My problem was that nothing of consequence, gameplay wise, happened outside of the shooting. The platforming, exploration, fist fights with Nadine climbing, etc. were all basically simulated, automatic and risk free requiring little to no thought from the player.
Now, if those sections were filled with good dialogue, interesting characters and themes, a decent plot, I would probably be more forgiving. But U4 really didn't have that stuff going on to a degree that would justify the 17 hours it went on for.
U4 ignored the strengths of the medium and doubled down on telling a highly controlled story that I ultimately found shallow and unengaging. I missed the popcorn flick stupidify of 1-3 and the veneer of intellectual/emotional sophistication in U4 fell completely flat for me.
So I'm thinking even if LL doesn't improve on the things I had beef with in 4, it's better pacing and relative brevity may allow me to enjoy it a bit more than 4. I do have fond memories of the series 1-3.
