United States Election: Nov 6, 2012 |OT| - Barack Obama Re-elected

I just drove by a few polling places here in Maryland and I've never seen so many Republicans in one place before (with the exception of church and a Zac Brown concert). There are lines of well-dressed, pleasant people over a mile long.
If Romney can bring out this kind of support in Maryland of all places, then this thing is going to be a landslide victory for America's Comeback Team. Let's hope guys. Either that or, since it's not noon yet, most Democrats are still in bed. -Bulbo Baggins reporting live from the heart of Maryland

So, if the media makes you think this is a close election, let me just tell you that in our betting center, Obama's odds are 1.15 while Romney's odds are 6.00.

So, yeah :)

Haha. Man. You're completely wrong on what I said. I said that classical liberals have done really well. John Howard won 4 consecutive elections. The democrats who are classically liberal performed very well for a minor party before they exploded. Australia has a long and proud tradition of liberalism and its tenants. (Small government, civil liberties, democracy, etc).

John Howard was a beneficiary of circumstance. He inherited a very solid base in economic policy reform on the back of Hawke and Keating and a recovery in the world economy led by the emergence of China.

His government wasn't small govt, reduced spending, reduced tax, civil liberties reign. According to an analysis by Andrew Norton from the Centre for Independent Studies in the decade from 1995 the real increase in spending per person was 40 per cent in health, 38 per cent on schools and 28 per cent on welfare. Norton says that "to many people these figures would look more like the record of a Labor than a Liberal government.

the debt was reduced by not spending the increasing revenues rather than reducing spending. Civil liberties, LOL, extremely conservative not at all libertarian, if he wasn't for the democratic process he'd have lasted about 2 days.

some of the things implemented reflected those liberal views but a lot did not because in the context of the australian electorate they would be political suicide.

(for the record one of my brothers was a long serving liberal cabinet minister in a state govt, just in case you think i'm a labor voter) actually i vote neither, there is far too much self interest in Australian politics, thank christ the heads of the Treasury, Finance and the Reserve Bank are smart and can control the stupid fuckers that get voted in)

Romney changed his position hourly at times and it was obvious that he was doing it strictly to pander. Basically he was broadcasting that he'd say anything if it meant more votes and while that's hardly a new thing in the world of politics I've never seen it so astoundingly blatant.

Romney was easily the GOP's best option but not because he was good. It's just the other candidates were all obviously completely batshit insane. While Romney is clearly a douche he's a marketable douche.

This.

I felt like I was taking crazy pills watching the GOP Debates. All of the candidates were laughable to me. Jon Huntsman is the only one who seems somewhat sane, and a decent person... even if he has some very far right views on certain issues. I can't believe these were the top offerings of people to run our country. It just shows how screwed up our government is. Same goes for the "Science Committee" in congress. Some of the most scientifically backasswards politicians are in the committee. These are the people making the decisions our laws are based on and they're completely inept.

Saw a few people get snared in some straight up "provisional ballot" bullshit - the poll worker didn't lie, but she definitely didn't tell the truth.

She said, "You can file a provisional ballot and it will be collected with the votes today"

She should have added "And it likely won't be counted unless it's a statistical tie, and even then, it likely won't get counted because some political party will find a way to reject it."

As an outside observer all this fascinates me. Looking forward to it (being over).

At what time (East coast wise as that's easier for me to calculate!) are the first Ohio exit polls likely to be released? Trying to work out what time to wake up.

Remember the lines move in accordance of how people are betting not on any true speculation of the outcome.

Someone else posted a gambling site, so it was a response to that, really.

That's like a four point movement in a couple of hours.

Yeah, their volume is going through the roof. It's already over 300k, so the numbers are going to be shifting around like crazy all day. They've had Obama at over 50% for the better part of a year now. Mitt peaked briefly at 45% right after the Denver debate.

Are we going to get some results during the day, or is that all going to be known at like 9-10pm EST? I've never seen such an unpredictable election. and i'm stunned...considering all the shit Romney, Ryan and the GOP said in the past year.
So many americans are really that blinded by racism, hatred, and a thinking of "hey Obama didn't do a perfect job, so let's change! Even if the other choice is gonna do a much worst job, but who cares!? Let's change anyway!"?

What does #tcot stand for?

Tonight, my media setup is as follows:
TV: ABC
Laptop stream: MSNBC
iPad stream: Fox News
Desktop stream: NeoGAF with Comedy Central, then CSPAN in the morning

And on the menu:
tiramisu
a foot-long shrimp po-boy from Parasol's
Barqs Root Beer
two pints of BlueBell Butter Crunch

Just gotta get through these next seven hours. This is going to be the longest day ever.

Voted first thing this morning. Was the only person under the age of 35, and I'm willing to bet one of maybe two Obama supporters. Also, our voting center was at a church. Voter intimidation if I've ever seen it. :p

Also, damn were there some dumb people volunteering and waiting in line.

Oh well, #TeamBarry, #OHforObama

If you are paying attention to the polls, this election isn't unpredictable.

South St. Louis MO - took a half hour to walk from my front door, vote and walk back.

+1 Obama (not gonna win Missouri lol)
+1 McCaskill (better fucking win)

Took me an hour to vote.

There were two lines, one for if you know your precinct and one if you don't know your precinct.

Turned out the latter was only to find your precinct and you had to go to the back of the line once you find it. I already knew mine, but some people were pissed off because they waited an hour outside and then had to do it all over again.

And I live in a rather smallish town.

I am seriously baffled and shocked by al the reports and stories in here that voting is so hard.
Shouldn't that be a top priority to the goverment? Make sure the federal goverment handles the voting proces and make sure it happens good and fast?
Or am just talking like a commie now?

I don't know, all the polls i've seen shown both candidates at the same %. Mind you, this is coming from medias outside of the US, so maybe there is something they're missing.

Yay, election day! Going to vote during my lunch, hopefully the lines are short then. Good luck to Macaskill in MO, lets show Akin that he's not wanted here.
