This week's episode was so far off base from what Game of Thrones should be that I couldn't be less excited for next season. What a disaster.

It'd be a disservice to hold off on LSH til next year.

If there's no LSH, then even bothering to bring in Beric last year was pointless, especially talking about all of his deaths. Beric leads to LSH and thematically, Robert Strong.

But I did love the episode. It's why I feel GOT should have more episodes in a season. Allows them to stay with characters longer, let scenes "breath", and just lets you "live" the story rather than listen through plot dumps.

Excellent 360 degree pan of Castle Black.

LSH is the most perfect WTF moment they could end with. I literally can't see a reason why they would hold off on it. It'll have people talking for MONTHS

Gotta be STANNIS, now that's been moved to episode 10.

Ahhh yeah, it could be. Just those little glimpses of it in the season preview (the one someone made a gif out of a few pages back) looked like they were trying to cheat with close shots of a few horsemen here and there. I hope it's huge!

What if D&D continue to troll Stannis fans and have him show up not saving the day, but ruining a peace accord that Jon was JUST about to reach with Mance and the Wildlings? Ugh.

Wait what? I thought they did the fight justice, what with the attack on the south side of the wall, Varamyr, the flaming arrows, the burning pitch, the giant at the inner gate, and Tormund being captured.

Edit: I wonder if Mance will have the horn in this version.

I'm getting on board with the final scene being Bloodraven. Back to the even numbered season finales ending with something in the far North/White Walkers and odd seasons with Daenerys/Dragons

Anyone else catch how Jon learned from his fight with the fookin' legend of gin alley and used the same move to win his fight against Styr?

Detour redeemed!! No? Whatever!

Well Stannis HAS to show up next episode right? I know D&D don't like him but they can't seriously rob him of his greatest moment. It would be as bad as making Jaime a rapist.

This sounds weird typing it out, but I was disappointed at the lack of crazy violence. There were a few moments but nothing like the insanity in Blackwater.

Not a good day to be Jon's pals, lol.
Yeah, the crazy over the top gore of Blackwater was great- the Hound chopping guys in half, STANNIS chopping that guy's skull in half, the rocks smushing that guy's head.

At the very least I was a little bummed we didn't get more of the tunnel fight with the giant. That seemed like an awesome side moment in the book that would have been fun to see on screen.

This was one of the better episodes in the series. I think I liked this much more than Blackwater because Jon was actually acting like book Jon.

More book Jon please.

Fantastic episode.

-Jon and Sam get to shine.

-Sam = not a coward.

-The giants and mammoths!

-Jon vs. Styr - Hammer Time!

-Thorne vs. Tormund

-Grenn killed the giant

-That smile between Jon and Ygritte

-The kid avenged his dad.

I would bang a hot farmer!
That's what's going to happen because that's what happens in the books.
"Boo, they did something differently from the books"
"It's an adaptation, it doesn't have to be the same"

"I wonder if they'll do the LSH reveal differently"
"They'll do it exactly the same as the book"

From what I recall Jon only comes across the aftermath there as well, only it was the blacksmith who died.

That true, most expensive shot could be chaining of the dragons. I assumed they were keeping the previews strictly as close shots because they didn't want to give away Stannis saving the day Rohan style.

Why? How?
It was just unsatisfying action cheese for most of the episode. Time seemed to stand still between the movements of characters from the top of the wall to down below. The honed focus on this one event was just completely unnecessary and failed to work as a climactic build to Jon's life as a wildling.

Lots of pieces were just silly, like the wildlings over the wall setting up camp just over the next ridge with a fire and everything. In some ways many pieces were thought out, but in others the way details were glossed over seemed silly. Normally scenes play by quickly enough that this would go unnoticed, but here we have such an intense focus on a sequence of events that do nothing but drag and show their flaws. For me the action was underwhelming, the character moments didn't really come, and the storyline wasn't pushed very far forward. These unbeatable odds are illustrated but there isn't a struggle to defeating them, and the losses aren't being played up either.

The only things I can think of that are extremely off base are:

1) Pyp and Grenn's death.
2) Sam kissing Gilly.
4) Slynt being incredibly cowardly.

We still haven't seen the charge the forest from the preview of the season. That most certainly will be Stannis's army next episode.

The book changes this episode were pretty smart, I thought. Grenn saying the Night's Watch vows was fantastic. The scythe was a really cool idea (and so were the archers hanging on the side of the wall). Making Jon's suicide mission more of a suicide mission was good too.

Good stuff. A giant riding a mammoth. The giant archer. The anchor being thrown released on the wall. So many cool moments. Thought Ygritte's death was handled well. I'll miss her. I was surprised they held off on Stannis, but that is fine. Next episode will be absolutely bursting at the seams with big moments. Crazy.

It's somewhat rare to have this happen -- but I disagree with literally everything you've just typed.

Did we ever hear "The Wall is yours, Jon Snow?"

That was one of my favorite moments from the book. I'm sad we didn't get a chance to hear something like this line from the books: "Donal chose you, and Qhorin Halfhand before him. Lord Commander Mormont made you his steward. You are a son of Winterfell, a nephew of Benjen Stark. It must be you or no one. The Wall is yours, Jon Snow."

That's probably one of my favorite lines from the series.

I don't think he'll get elected next week so we might see it next year.

By the way, I don't remember that well, but Jon going to talk with Mance after the first battler is not in the books, right? Is it some thing tha DB&DB came up with? It's making me scratch my head because I don't remember that happening.

I just looked at the Hotpie scene and the scene in the preview. Different armor of the
shoulder on the left side of the screen with Arya in it. But the sword shot before hand looks like it could be Brienne. So I am seriously doubting an Arya/Hound and Brienne scene.

Look again,
it's definitely her right shoulder: comparison pic here

My non book reader friends were disappointed, and I kinda am too. Now that I think about it, why the hell would 99,000 people retreat?! They had it won! Why did they only use one mammoth when they have tons! The Sam scenes at the beginning were so unnecessary. No Stannis. Jon going out without a sword is probably the stupidest thing you could do. My friends just thought it could have been better if they lengthened this episode and finished the fight. I mean there is NO way they are going to show everything next week.

Will Arya even get to the Braavos boat? Where are they going with Brienne all of that?

No one wants to see Dany next week why are they wasting time on her?

I'm scared we won't even see Stoneheart. I'm just kinda disappointed with some of these changes. This is the second episode where they "waste" time with new monologues that make me worried that they won't show something.

It happens but he's forced to by Thorne or Slynt I don't quite remember.
