All this spoiler talk got me thinking of policies at other forums.

If you really want to see a screwed up, hilarious, and disturbing mess of people being spoiled, check out the Something Awful forums. The front page of the forum has a subforum titled with a major spoiler, as well as the alt-text for that subforum. That subforum is already a notorious den of savagery, and folks from it are invading other subforums for even more silly antics.

A tactic that has continued from last year is the malicious changing of people's avatars to spoilers, facilitated by SA's built in pay-to-change avatar system, which is usually used to shame posters for ignorant and disgusting behavior. People are also buying new usernames to post spoilers before they are banned.

The TV subforum has two threads for the show, one for book readers and one for show-only watchers. The show-only thread was hit by that avatar spoiler business, as well as the normal drive-by spoiler posting, usually from those crazy subforums. Their tactic of disabling avatars was sound, until there were people posting spoilers in signatures and using images as well, which I probably shouldn't link. People have somewhat given up and are resigned to the fact that the show-only thread is going to have spoilers no matter what.

The moderators are doing what they can, but it's still a minefield there. They've had to close threads for a bit, just to sort it all out. Somehow spoilers are also making their way to the banned user list, where the reason for banning contains text and images of spoilers. The book-reader thread in the TV subforum has a lot of nice folks lamenting all this craziness.

Last thing of interest to note is the presence of "The Bad Thread", over in the book subforum. This outrageous thread was previously titled "GRMM: A Song of Ass and Fire", and was recently changed to "ASoIaF: The Officially Licensed Novelization of HBO's hit show Game of Thrones", which is pretty funny. The OP of the thread will explain its legacy, but if you jump into the thick of it you will find many character assassinations of George R.R. Martin, tearing down of the novels and the show, and folks posting horrible things in general with absolute impunity. Also, they know the novels inside and out. It's an amusing thread to read, but it goes over the line quite a bit. There's this amazing image as well posted in there, but I'm not sure of its origin.

In summary, NeoGAF is doing pretty well in comparison.

Started reading it, hilarious. I'm like 1% of the way through, pre ADWD release, and everyone is pissed. I haven't read the books but there is a described Ramsay-Reek-Fake Arya scene that is the worst thing I have ever read.

After encountering super fans on westeros.org, it is nice to here from people who think the books are shit and GRUM is a terrible person.

Thenn's 2.0 are fine with me, they add some villains for the Night's Watch to fight since we know Tormund can't go anywhere. Appropriately creepy and silly yes, but they serve their purpose

Does anyone have any good syrio theories? I-I just don't want him to be dead. The first sword of braavos couldn't have been taken down by scrubs. No way. Pls George pls.

True, but I found him to be waaaay more likeable then the other kingsguard (except for Jaime.)

Arys Oakheart seems like a nice guy. Not to mention Barriston and Sandor.

He even refused to hit Sansa when Joff told him too. Well, he did hit her eventually but not that hard.

Was it Boros Blount who was meant to be guarding Tommen but surrendered immediately when Tyrion seized him? That guy was such a muppet.

How am I breaking the rules though? Wouldn't people know if he does or not? I really don't care if I'm spoiled, but I'm just wondering whats so wrong with saying that in a thread full of unmarked spoilers.

Arys Oakheart was a nice guy and so where Brariston and Sandor.

I agree on Boros. He is such a muppet.

You're not breaking the rules, we just wanted to warn you. Joffrey dies in the next episode, the wine is poisoned.

You're not breaking the rules. If you want to know if he dies soon, then ask a question. You just made a statement, and people are telling you to get out under the assumption that you posted in the wrong thread and therefore they don't want you to get spoiled accidentally.

I hate to admit this, but I've been a pretty active member of The Bad Thread for several years until just after Dance was released. It's literally just people who are bitter as fuck waiting between novels and we do our best to shit on GRRM as much as possible, sometimes in the most horrible, offensive ways possible, but it's all in good fun - everyone is a huge fan, despite some questionable people.

One year a mod forced the top 10 posters in the thread to take part in the Something Awful Book Barn (book subforum) Secret Santa or face a ban. It was the best thing ever - I got a huge collection of awesome books in return like Lud-in-the-Mist, Shadow & Claw, Lord of Light...

That said, the best image out of the thread I can NOT find right now, but I might go look for it. It's GRRM photoshopped into a walker with a bib and some ridiculous shit all around the outside like "rape" and "lemoncakes" (aka the two most frequent Bad Thread catch phrases).

We were pieces of shit - someone posted it on GRRM's livejournal as a 1x1 pixel jpg that slipped past Ty's careful eye and then they replaced the 1x1 with the huge pic.

I miss that place. ;P

Oh man, I remember that image and when it was posted on GRRM's Not A Blog. I used to lurk on that SA thread. I also posted on Is Winter Coming? for a time. That was a crazy time in the fandom. The endless waiting for ADWD had made all of us crazy.

The talking Thenn on the show was Styr the Magnar, I believe.

I just checked google, he is. man that's bullshit. why make him look like just any other wildling when their more ordered society and appearance was the main distinction from other wildlings? smh.

Unless he killed Trant and took his face...he's probably dead. Or maybe Trant was so embarrassed by being owned by Syrio that he told the queen that he killed him, when in reality Syrio beat him and escaped.

He gets eaten by a dragon. Hodor rules the 7 kingdoms.

You're not breaking the rules. Some people do accidentally stumble in here and got spoiled (more than you'd think), and they were just trying to protect you. But yeah, if you don't care about spoilers nothing wrong with being in here.

Well, that is awesome. Thats kinda anticlimactic though. I wanted him beheaded or something.

Just wait until you see the fallout from it, that's when things get awesome.

Well it's not like he just keels over, the poison closes his throat and he slowly suffocates over the course of a couple minutes, slowly turning purple.

It's cool if you want to get spoiled just don't post in the other thread.

Don't worry, he slowly suffers and no one really does anything or gives a fuck except Cersei.

Now run from spoilers now before anything you don't want spoiled is posted :(

They decided he was too fabiolous apparently.

The one thing that really bothers me still, though, is that it looks like Stannis' arrival at the Wall will not be a surprise and we will be getting up-to-the-minute updates on his trip.

Yeah, this really bothers me too. Stannis' arrival was very unexpected for me while reading the book. I also think Jon got off too easily on the show after meeting Alliser Thorne. I felt really hopeless for Jon when Alliser showed up in the book.

Fuzzy

I would bang a hot farmer!
I get why they sometime need to cut/change scenes because of time or budget restraints (Tyrion getting knocked out, Arya's storyline). But unnecessary changes like these annoy the hell out of me. Almost all those brand new scenes are poor quality too.
I only started the books after the first season and thought it was so cool that Tyrion got to fight in that battle. I was disappointed when I rewatched the first season and he's knocked out for the whole thing. I understand they did it to save money but I was still disappointed.

that's just the whole Jamie thing of doing what those you swore to obey tell you vs sticking to the ideals you swore to uphold

it's a loose/loose situation
Then he should just tighten it up.

Because making them cannibals is more extreme, and the show has quite a strong trashy streak.

Barristan was in the council on the show. He lied to Jorah

Pretty sure he wasn't. When Ned stands up to Robert in the book about killing Dany he isn't there to be the only one who stands with Ned. Can't think of him being there in any other scene.

He could have heard about Mormont being a traitor at some point but we don't see him learn this at any point.

So I had the STRANGEST encounter at a Gamestop today. Was talking with the guy and Game of Thrones came up, so we started talking. We both read the books and we were discussing our anticipation of this Sunday.

Another guy chimes in from behind and says he works for Dish Network and has seen the episode already and that they aren't killing Joffrey this episode.

Don't believe him of course, but it was still a very strange encounter...

Doesn't Robert tell Ned about Jorah in the second episode just as they having breakfast (on the way to king's landing) when he gets a letter about Dany's wedding and Robert wants her dead.

Speaking of happy endings. Considering how dark and brutal ASOIAF is, it having a happy ending would be kind of neat twist. Though also kind of easy to guess, i reckon... GRRM knows we know GRRM knows...
Though perhaps more likely the series has "multiple endings" so to speak, each one character oriented. Some happy some not.

GRRM has described the ending as 'bittersweet'.

That's not the case. But my uncle works for Nintendo and I have it on good authority that Dany's dragons burn a Wii U alive this sunday.

As with Joffrey, no one mourns it.

So, mixed one? So "we know GRRM knows" is right actually.
Hmph.
This is actually a problem with many media for me. (Type of) The ending isn't probably bad, perhaps good, perhaps bittersweet. But in practice, there ain't any others, not counting BS endings like Mass Effect 3's. Too easy to predict things.

Oh, and another thing. Is there any simple no-book-spoilers chart/page/something for recaps and characters and background details (like what happened to the Princess Elia and her child). I figure my brother might use one. Also a friend. And honestly, i could use such too, i can't remember what happened in the books even though i did do a re-read last year...

I just want the Stark kids to see and meet each other again. The series has just been brutal on one particular house.

And I imagine that on the show, and how all the viewers would feel. How the kids would feel seeing their family again. So just give me that GRRM before you probably have them all murdered.

Maybe they will, but one of them will be dead.

I dunno, Barristan was never in the room for council meetings, but he was probably right outside guarding the door. I think he knows and he's just feeling Jorah out before he makes his move. So far, Jorah hasn't done anything to make Barristan question him, but when things eventually boil over and Jorah loses his shit over the Daario stuff, I think Barristan will seal the deal on his banishment by revealing the spying. He can say that he thought Jorah had reformed himself, but now it's clear that his loyalty was just lust for the queen.

Yeah that's kind of how I took it actually, that he may know or may not. He certainly wasn't going to left Jorah know at that moment if he did. Smart move.

He's full of shit. You don't get advance screenings of content if you work for a Cable provider.

Yup. Those expecting King Jon and Dany Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne with Tyrion as Hand and Sam as Grand Maester are going to be disappointed. There might not be an Iron Throne to fight over by the end.

I don't care who wins the throne or which houses survive. I just want Davos to make it home to his wife and remaining children.

I just hope its overly ambiguous. I've followed to seris for too long and I won't be satisfied unless everything is tied up nicely.
