Chances are she would have been even worse to be honest, she was replaced for a reason.

iirc GRRM said that there were no problems with her portrayal of the role.
While I think Emilia Clarke is not a particularly good actress, I think she looks closer to how I imagined Dany's looks in the books.
I think Tamzin Merchant could've made a good Margaery or Jeyne Westerling though.

Edit: Looking at the other recast roles, what a shame they replaced Ian McNeice for Illyrio Mopatis.

I probably don't help with that. Sorry.

Hah.

Hah.

Losing McNiece as Illyrio was a stroke of luck, because now we can have McNiece as Manderly.

If you mean Joffrey choking on his own lungs that's episode 2.

I know. The third ep's synopsis was talking about the 'fallout from the Royal Wedding, and Tyrion getting into trouble'. Guess that puts all the fear people had concerning Joffrey staying alive to rest.

Had to go back and re-read that chapter in SoS where Arya gets Needle back. Couldn't remember how it happened in the book. They're rearranging stuff, for one, since that happens after Joffery's wedding. I'm also curious what they're going to do with Sandor now.. that was the incident in the book where he was mortally wounded, but he barely took a scratch on the show.

Saw an article earlier today questioning whether the audience should be rooting for Arya at this point, considering the path that she's chosen and the things she's done. I just smiled, cause she's going to far darker places later on. I think way too many of these critics and journalists are going off only what they see on the show, having never read the books.

In any event, it was a hell of a strong start to S4.

I love every time I read something like "I'm getting a little tired of Dany not doing much."

Will be interesting to see the reactions to upcoming events. A big problem for me is the series has two main villains, Joffrey (crazy/evil) and Tywin (cunning/evil). I'm guessing the idea was they would be removed so the "true evil" of the white walkers would take over.

But that doesn't actually happen. To date they just remain as a vague threat that got owned by Sam of all people. So I'm wondering if the show will mix this up somehow.

She has really unusual eyebrows, it's always the first thing I notice whenever I see a picture or video of her.

I dunno, I don't think her eyebrows are all that weird. Other than the fact that they appear to be trying to escape from her head in that one gif.

Otherwise, they're just so noticeable because of the contrast against the super-blonde wig.

To be honest, I see most of the characters to be too complex to be considered good or evil. Essentially all of them have done unspeakable things, even those we consider to be the heroes or protagonists. It's all a matter of perspective, as well. If we wouldn't have Theon's POV chapters (or the portrayal of his torture in the show), we would definitely consider him to be a villain, for instance.

Of course, the outright mad people like Joffrey or the Mountain are irredeemable, but most characters are grey zones.

But yes, the story is about all these powerful lords and ladies fighting each other and ignoring the looming threat from the beyond the Wall.

Arya as a faceless assassin saves Sansa's life. Sansa not recognizing Arya thanks her and asks her for her name. Arya responds "I have no name but my sister used to call me Horseface" and walks away. Sansa realizes it's Arya but it's too late to go after her because she's already gone.

And Sansa say "I luv you FIVE-ever!"

Typically people aren't replaced after filming a pilot because there was a great reaction to the work they did.

Was she replaced due to scheduling conflicts, like Jennifer Ehle was, or did they dump her because they didn't like her performance? Regardless, I'm still curious to see what she was like.

Not necessarily. The new Daario is vastly inferior to the old one, for instance, and yet here we are. :p

In the books? Yes, I can see that, but not so much in the tv show. Simply because of the nature of the medium, you don't really get that depth of insight.

I'm just interesting to see how that comes across for people who don't read.

So, re-reading AGOT in English - the Northerners, and particularly Ned, frown a LOT don't they. lol

Holy shit this one always gets me.

It is a great summary of Dany's Season 2.

They never gave an official statement, but according to GRRM, her performance was fine.

Well... sort of. I actually find Tywin in the show much more sympathetic than in the books (though that might be at least partly because I just absolutely adore Charles Dance). Of course the show omits many details, but they still don't portray the characters particularly different from how they are in the books - Jon is still an arrogant son of a bitch as he arrives at the Night's Watch (although they condensed his transformation into an episode or two), Dany has killed many people during her conquest, Theon has betrayed the people he grew up with and murdered children, and so on.

The world of Westeros is rough and cruel, so much so that even the good guys have a lot of blood on their hands. Tywin's motivations are actually as sympathetic as a lot of other characters', even though he spirals downwards until he gets killed.

And from what I can gather from the Unsullied thread, a lot of them are aware of many nuances the characters portray. I mean, GAF of Thrones is a bit different from the average viewer, but the people who delve into the material and start discussing it, or speculating about it, seem to comprehend a lot of the things that are going on, and understand a lot of depth of the characters, even though the show is not as voluminous as the books.

.

To be fair if she was bad Martin wouldn't say so. It struck me as a horrible casting decision and I'm glad they went a different direction. Clarke isn't a good actress but she does "intense" well, and she looks the part.
