Upgrade to Windows 10?

weird, so it download, unpacked, and said i was ready to upgrade.

i clicked ready to upgrade, it asked me to reboot, and when i rebooted, nothing happened lol [just ended up back in windows!]

edit: hoping third time's a charm here - first download attempt was ~2.5Gb, second was ~5.5Gb, this third one is now ~8.5Gb, lofuckingl.

I already have the whole thing pre-loaded and I've noticed a lot of people have encountered problems with the manual method.

I'm waiting for the notification, I'm not in any particular rush to upgrade, so I'd rather wait then potentially run into the problems manual installers are encountering.

Oohhhh.....well than if your willing to try free solutions maybe you should check if AVG Free Edition is Windows 10 compatible.

Thanks I had AVG a while ago and loved it but I got a virus while having it and it did nothing, I refuse to go back haha. I'll just wait for a Bit Defender update.

As far as I know you cannot remove it. It is a part of Windows. Just a different name for MS Security Essentials. There is really no reason to remove it.

I would check if there is any updates available for Bit Defender that is for Windows 10. If not I am sure it will come soon. In the mean time Windows Defender is good enough to protect your PC.

yeah there currently isn't a new version 1.0.21.1099, I'm sure one will be released soon enough. :D I'm really enjoying windows

Just to confirm, the only difference between selecting "Upgrade" and "Create ISO" (In regards to installing Win 10) is that Upgrade automatically pastes in your Win 7/8 product key?

I kept getting the "Something Happened" error from trying to update via Media Creation tool, so I'm downloading the WIn 10 files onto a USB instead. Is that a proper workaround, or should I just keep trying to upgrade until it eventually works?

Currently on Win 7 Home Premium btw.

Your Win 7 key is not a valid Win 10 key. If you do a clean install without upgrading the key won't be accepted and you'll have to reinstall Win 7.

Win 7/8 --> upgrade to 10 --> clean install, use skip when asked for key. The new install will be activated without inputting the key.

Sadly not having a good experience at all on my laptop. Boot it up and nothing responds to button or mouse presses so I can actually login to my account. If it actually decides to work there, windows may eventually stop working and won't fix itself. Slow downs, hangs, and to top it off looks like my sym links didn't copy over. At least not all of them for some reason.

Is there any official confirmation that using the media creation tool upgrade is a legit way of getting your license upgraded to Win10 license?

I would hold off using it. I used it and I am not activated. I used the app on another machine and it was activated. I am going to be pissed if I can't find my win8 key and have to pirate my legit OS, but I'd do that sooner than revert to Win8 and wait for the app to do its thing.

Download and install were all smooth for me, only about an hour total. Every app seems to be running fine except Firefox, and every game I have tried on Steam seems to be smoother.

The option to have the window and taskbar colors change to match the desktop background is a nice aesthetic touch!

This about sums up the last 20hrs or so

pkw21wD.png
Code:
if(ErrorCode > 0 && ErrorCode < 99999){
     print(ErrorCode.ErrorMessage);
     else{
          print("Something happened");
     }
}

150+ ping in almost every server

Nice work Microsoft. Good Operating System for sure.
Uhhh... What now? You saying an OS is affecting your ping?

Oh yeah. My Edge browser doesn't work either.

So far the programs that don't work are:
Settings (and consequently everything tied to it.)
Edge Browser
Cortana / Unresponsive search bar

So basically all the Windows 10 specific stuff does not work at all. But my 3rd party stuff works fine.

I'm not even mad about Edge and Cortana, but I am mad I can't even access the most basic stuff I would normally have access to and I can't roll it back.

What is activating it though?

I have a new SSD that I wanted to put windows on. Should I upgrade on my tower to 10 on my HDD and then clean install W10 on the SSD?

Shit...thanks. Looks like I'll stick to just an upgrade.

So, if I was ever able to do a clean install of W10, my 8.1 key will not work? How will I activate Windows?

You need to take the upgrade path first. After upgrading, you can opt for a clean install, skip the key input screens and just activate it online after the install is finished.

Man, this and the OT thread make W10 sound like a clusterfuck. I've been dual booting it for some time now so I know that's not entirely true, but still.. these aren't exactly the best first impressions for people to stumble upon.

Should have left my PC on last night. Oh well, I played around with the preview build and I can wait for it to properly hit my PC eventually.

That's because impatient people are circumventing the upgrade process then getting mad at the product that it isn't doing what they want it to do.

It's kind of bizarre reading the reactions in here.

but is it associated with some sort of hardware ID? It's odd because what happens if you change components (or even an entire system)?

Well, I'm asking because that tool didn't seem to get my Win8 license when I've updated with it. And now I'm stuck with that generic banned 3V66T key. So I assume that this is the point where I go and pay Microsoft for my "free" Win10 upgrade?

Tried running Binding of Isacc Rebirth on my my laptop with an Intel integrated card, that i upgraded to W10 for a test, and it runs completely smooth, where before with W8 it felt choppy at times and with a high response time . Also levels now restart almost instantly when pressing R (0.5-1 sec) where before it took 2-3 seconds before the level started.
I'm alredy impresed with W12.

Yes, IIRC, motherboard and processor. Not sure what happens when the original hardware is changed, I guess a new activation and a contact with Microsoft support should be necessary.

Also, the activation is also tied with your Microsoft account (meaning that an entire system change should be doable).

I'd download it manually if your tired of waiting. That's what I did.

lol, that doesn't work dude - asks me for a serial key.

this is just a fucking nightmare.

gone through the download [through windows update] successfully twice now, when it asks me to reboot my system to start the upgrade, i'm just shot back into a normal windows 8.1 environment, and windows update loads to show that the update failed.

Oh my goodness. I just learned that headset port is working now on xbox one controller under windows 10. Chat headset is recognized fine as audio input and output device. Finally!!!!!!!

Just like previous windows (since XP) if your hardware majorly changes or you activate it on multiple PCs, you just need to contact support. They'll just do a check that your code isn't being used on a shit ton of PCs, disable the code on any old hardware they see on their end, then you're good to go.

Huh, it's activated by itself after some time but the key is the same 3V66T. So is this the key that ALL upgrade licenses will use?

okay, was getting error 80070070 - which apparently is a drive space issue

deleted Titanfall [that fat bastard], so i magically have tons of space on my C drive now.

will see if that works.

Are you guys liking Edge? I was using Chrome in Windows 8 but never used extensions, so I'm not missing out on anything while using Edge so far

It seems.. okay? nothing spectacular but it seems to work fine and has a minimalistic UI like Chrome

Also, question - Is there any way to make desktop appear when I alt + tab like in Windows 8?

Getting issues with NVIDIA drivers not responding and other problems with Sound Blaster Z drivers. I will have to go back to 8.1 until W10 is more mature and receives more updates. This blows because I really like it a lot :(

I posted about this earlier with Nvidia. If you can't install them, use task manager to see if any Nvidia stuff is running, end all processes. After that, the driver install worked.

Anyone know if it's possible to change the default folder to save Xbox clips/screenshots to? My screenshots are being saved to desktop and the clips are going on my SSD instead of my storage drive.
