I heard about this story a couple weeks ago and it made me curious. So when a cop came in for some coffee I chatted with him about the topic of filming. He said he expected to be filmed at some point and if he was doing anything wrong he deserves to get caught. Who knows if he actually believed this or if circumstances could change his opinion, but it is a question I want to ask more officers when I get a chance.
your cop is obviously insane and an outlier, as all cop beating videos i have seen are full of cops beating people

thus, all cops beat people

This kinda stuff always sickens me, and it sucks because where I live the cops are great but the CHP sucks. I honestly dont know what I woulda have done, fearful situation but I've never been to type to stand around and watch this stuff let alone film it.

Props to the guy for filming and hiding the card. Sucks though for the cops saying he fit the identity of a suspect.

Guess thats why you always need an alibi! davechappelle.gif

So I find ignorant statements by ungrateful people who group all officers together and are apparently clueless at what the world would be like with out them a bit annoying.

I will send $10,000 to your pal pay account if you can find me one video, just one single video of police brutality(thats not the hard part there are millions of those) where other police in the video stop the brutality and crime from happening, as opposed to the usual where they stand around, watch and laugh. You have 6 hours from the time of this post.

This is the only time I've ever seen police officers, aka HEROS, do anything even remotely questionable. Even then, I'm sure they were acting out of safety for all those involved including the person filming. Also, next time you are the victim of a home invasion, don't you dare call the cops because you are probably deserving considering how you want to persecute them in the first place. What is this anyway, a witch hunt? Besides, teh camera could have appeared to be a weapon, the cop had every right to aim his weapon at the guy's head, he was clearly protecting himself from a person who could have been a spree killer, better to be safe than sorry.

FUCK DA PIGS.

I hate generalizing but every cop I've come across or read about is ...

Only rarely have I read about down to earth attitude and not being a power lover.

Probably typical to you who only watches crooked cop shows on tv.
Or lives in a city/neighborhood with high levels of police concentration ie brooklyn. Police are scum in NYC. I'd trust a stranger before a cop, I swear on my life.

I will send 5 dollars to your pal pay account if you can prove to me you have $10,000 in your paypal account or are able to deposit 10,000 dollars into the account by today, 6 hours from now.

No photoshop, I will be able to tell too.

Some of these phones and cameras can already shoot directly to YouTube in near-realtime.

Wonder what the cops think they'll do about that.

Doesn't even need to be Youtube if Cloud Services happen to make a push on phones. Save the video file online and in real-time and they can't do shit about it like searching Youtube until a week later.

I'd rather run into a criminal then a cop at least I would have a fighting chance of defending myself without getting slapped with assault on a police officer. Kinda sad isn't it?

My wp7 is set to send any videos or photos I take to my skydrive. I wonder how they would deal with that?

Also, I agree there should be some sort of national record-a-cop day, except in Mass. and Ill where recording is illegal. Would be great to get people into the act of recording a cops and for cops to know they are always being watched.

This is true. If you kill a civilian while being attacked its self-defense. The same cannot be said of police.

Because those cops don't get hits or ratings.

Its not illegal to record cops in Mass, Maryland or Illinois.

It's illegal to record AUDIO in locations where people have an expectation of privacy.

According to cops, they expect privacy in public streets

he sounds like one of the good guys. Of course the good cops aren't particularly going to care if they are being filmed. Its when the bad ones are doing something wrong and they know, of course they have a problem with it.

He disobeyed direct orders. Therefor he committed a crime. So that means cops are bad? SMH. Everyone hates cops until YOU need them. You know what isn't in this article.... Videos of the thousands of people that were helped today by officers. All the people who's lives were saved because of them. All the crimes that were stopped today because of them. Wrap your head around the whole picture. 99% of officers are good. It's the 1% that make bad headlines every once in awhile.

Isn't it funny how cops have no problem justifying some of their actions with "You have nothing to worry about if you haven't broken the law", but they get violently angry when it's turned around on them?

As long as this supposed other 99% stays quiet on the injustices that the 1% cause, they are accomplices as far as im concerned.

You can't be serious.

Typical behavior is giving you a meaningless and patronizing lecture for a 10mph speeding infraction. This is atypical, although possibly more common than we'd like.
In my experience (though admittedly, most of it was not in the US) it's quite common for cops to try and confiscate or destroy recording equipment that caught them breaking the law.

At least these days you can shout at them "it's auto-uploaded to the internet", even if it isn't true.

I'm not so sure I'd agree, again sadly.

I blame the bay harbor butcher.

Seriously though, that's some fucked up shit. LOL @ the police statement saying the guy filming "matched the description of one of the subjects". Ohh, so he was black...

What a cocksucker. This is like a textbook case of abuse of power. Should someone that cowardly really have a gun and the authority to use it? Police, at least all the ones I'm familiar with, fall mostly into two categories: Those that are morons and didn't want to work at McDonalds so they got the only "respectable" job they could find and those that are ex-military or wannabe bad-asses and have anger issues. They should really raise the requirements to become a police officer.

110% agree with the bolded.

What assholes of cops, its people like them that give cops in general such bad names.

Good thinking on the guy who took the video though, yay from MicroSD cards.

holy shit at that youtube video of the woman getting arrested. I wanted to punch that fucker right in the face. that is so stupid. "we're not safe with you standing right behind us", wtf, she's like 15ft away on HER fucking lawn.

I met this douchebag 24 year old who a friend of mine dragged me to go to a shooting range with because she thought he was "weird". So she and I meet him there and he's unloading his shit in the parking lot and I notice his gun is on his hip and a worker for the range comes out and asks "you a cop?" and he says yes. So I say to myself, I wonder what makes my friend think he's weird. The next three hours of shooting and eating afterwards proved how fucking horrible the requirements are to be a cop.

Not only is a he a truly racist mother fucker but I asked him why he became a cop and he said "a year ago I was working at walmart and decided to get a real job"

Nobody likes being filmed without their consent.

It is illegal to film a police officer in some states and the reasoning behind makes sense.

Here in Chicago, CPD officers are required to live within city boundaries. These officers tend to go to work covering their uniform with baseball jerseys. It's quite common to hear that a police officers car was vandalized after criminals discover who the car belongs to.

Houses also make for attractive homes to break into by burglars seeing as they contain guns in this relatively gun free city.

I would imagine filming police is illegal because the video can be used by criminals to later target police officers and their family.

If San Jose PD is implementing this, as is San Francisco PD, so can every other Police Department in the country.

1222-California-Police-Cameras_full_600.jpg

There is no reason why every officers action shouldn't be recorded at all times on duty. Cameras in police cruisers aren't enough, we need helmet or even badge mounted cameras.

Because Mr. Benoit matched the description of one of the subjects just reported fleeing the scene
He was wearing a pink t-shirt, I very much doubt he matched the description of the criminal fleeing the scene.

Yes. But not badge or torso-mounted as it will not pick up where the officer is looking. We, as the citizenry, should be able to see what the officer saw and heard if ever there is a trial or an investigation. No more BS 'out of view x, y and z was going on'. We should be able to see hear as close as possible, exactly what the officer saw and heard.

to maximize cop surveillance we should plant cameras on cops in several keys areas

the crotch and the nipples (both of them) would be a great start

and not tiny little things either, i mean big ass honkin cameras

Ok, this lady is fucking stupid. I don't like cops as much as anyone else, and I especially don't like ones that abuse power or let the position go to their head. But when a cop tells you to do something, it's not your place to argue with them then and there - do what they say, or deal with the consequences. It's not like he didn't give her plenty of opportunities to comply and not get in trouble, she just thought she'd see how far she could push and it bit her in the ass.

Wrong. You don't have to do everything a cop says. She was legally on here lawn bothering no one. She had every right to be there. The officer simple didn't like her filming so he made a issue of it.

If I was her, I would not have even responded to the police. I would have stood on my porch and continued recording.

This was a justified arrest to you?

Seems like we get a video like this every week. Is this sort of fucked up shit common with U.S. law enforcement, or what?

Increase their pay and you'll get better and more qualified people for the job.

Police officers don't make shit, so I don't see why the best and brightest would want to do it unless it's been their dream job since birth.

??? Where do you live? Starting salary in Waukesha, WI is $51k. Many other cities pay more than that. Not huge, but hardly shit considering that is a lot more than most kids make out of college. Add in overtime, and extremely nice raises and you are probably close to 100k a couple years in. Back when I was looking for a job a couple years ago I believe Huston was giving new recruits an extra $20k signing bonus with a similar starting salary.

Nobody said she was breaking the law, I said she was being fucking stupid. And she was. Right or wrong, you don't argue with a cop during the heat of the moment - you will face the consequences of choosing to do that each and every time.

I just sent an e-mail to the mayor, assistant to the mayor, and the chief of the police department about the lady who arrested for filming on her own property.

I think anyone who cares should at least do that, even if the end result is not what it should be:

http://www.cityofrochester.gov/contactus/

I simply stated that I believe that the arrest was illegal and immoral, that she had a right to do what was filmed, that the officers' jobs should be terminated as a result, and where I am from to emphasize that the whole world is watching, not just Rochester.

Not sure where you're getting your info. Police, especially state police/highway patrol, make out like bandits.

Admittedly, some of the "grunts" (i.e., sheriff's deputies) sometimes make on the lower end, but ironically, I don't have as many issues with them.
