I'd still like to hear those issues and policies regarding equality from the GOP though.

Minorities might've cared about equality in 2008, but what they care about now is jobs and the economy. Cut taxes for job creators, keep out immigrants to stop them taking our jobs, and make China illegal day one. That's the Romney plan to help minorities, and that's why minorities are voting Romney in record numbers.

Really interesting to me to see how people's perceptions are colored by their thoughts/beliefs/opinions. Reading some of these responses, you'd think people were watching two different debates.

I'm 26 years old, and only just starting to care about politics, and I have to say I think this election is a good time to get into it. Politifact has helped me a great deal to figuring out my candidate of choice, and without it I'd probably still be as lost and thus indifferent to the whole endeavor.

I believe he said he would have Ahmadinejad charged with genocide, because saying he'd wipe Israel off the map is absolutely exactly the same as actually doing it, so it'd be totally legit to have him arrested and charged with genocide.
Yeah . . . what the fuck was with that? That and the Iran needs Syria's access to the sea. Romney is lucky that people are too busy laughing at Obama's "Bayonets and Horses" line to get around to discussing those brain farts.

Quite a safe performance from Mitt, that both he and Obama flip flop on foreign policy for votes probably matters very little in the end.

Obama was funnier and as usual more likeable, but I'd doubt if this debate will change much in the polls.

At this point about 90% of the people claiming to be for Romney are trolling

No, its when people make up stupid shit like "He doesn't look presidential" or "He just doesn't create the presidential vibe" or "He only won because he's black (which is my favorite because the minority vote just isn't that big)"

Its good that all the conservatives you meet are right on the issues. Its great. But it irks the hell out of me when people so conveniently and casually deny the fact that race does play a part. Its not even subtle. Do you suddenly not see the "Don't ReNIG" shirts on TV? Do you not see a ridiculous birther movement? All this is right out in the open.

I do not like Obama.

There are PLENTY of reasons not to like Obama. I'd just like to hear some of the ones I agree with instead of ones centered around dumb shit.

I honestly haven't seen the "Don't ReNIG" shirts on tv. Birther movement yes i suppose you have a point there. I would play devils adovcate and say how many of those people were just desperate not to have a liberal president and how many were legit racist.

I don't know. I can't read peoples hearts. But they'res plenty legit issues here, Obamacare, the economy, foreign affairs, his whole flip flop on the XL pipeline.

All the promises made that are unfulfilled. A huge deficit.

I mean is that what your asking me? There's plenty of legit issues. Unless you think my positions are "dumb shit" in that case you just disagree with me

I believe he said he would have Ahmadinejad charged with genocide, because saying he'd wipe Israel off the map is absolutely exactly the same as actually doing it, so it'd be totally legit to have him arrested and charged with genocide. Which I think inciting genocide is a pretty massive deal under the Geneva Convention. But the way he said it was weird. He didn't say UN, he said HE would do it. Which means the US. Which I don't think is how that works.

Wasn't that mistranslated or something anyway?

Well...after reading GAF I thought sure Mr. Romney would suck.

After watching...he didn't. I thought President Obama did the better job, but not by a landslide.

Right now...I can see why this election is a toss up, and as an Obama supporter I'm not happy about it. I kinda wouldn't mind if Romney of 2 years ago was the Vice President right now.

I'll commend your honesty, its not easy to be rational when its a dead heat like it is. People are often blinded by their political affiliations. I think Obama did a great job tonight, and Romney did very well. Obama came off more direct and assertive where Romney came off more moderate and passive, which I think was done on purpose to pander to the undecided voters. To me it was clear Obama wanted to pick a fight and Romney didn't take the bait. Regardless, they both did very well. People pretending otherwise are blind.

I think both Obama and Romney supporters are all probably a bit scared to be honest, its basically a 50/50 split 14 days before election. Swing voters, swing counties and swing states are what will make or break this election. There are either going to be cheers of joy on GAF come election day or end of the world threads, no in between. Either result will be entertaining.

MOVE ON

How many of you wanking liberals had a grand circle jerk when you "did something amazing, elect a man not only of race but a man that actually transcends race"

Seriously. He's black. That's great. Historic yes. A great sign of racial divides healed But come on now.

In reality Republicans are supporting equality more when they make it about issues and policies. Instead of this great liberal white guilt "can we overcome it? can we bring even the least of these into office? oh will the public accept it? are they even ready yet?" It's practically racist the way you make everything about the mans color.

He's a hell of a lot more than that.

(not every liberal does this but it's so annoying)

I live in West Virginia. I...it's nice you believe that, but holy shit the stuff I have heard. We weren't even part of the confederacy lol. There are people here still bitter that we aren't part of Virginia anymore.

The day I heard a Republican woman say Obama was a Nazi straight faced because she read Mein Komph and he was doing everything Hitler wrote about is the day I realized a lot of people really are stupid. My favorite thing I saw today actually was a bumper sticker with the O from Obama's campaign graphic design outlining a hammer and sickle from the old Soviet Union flag. It's been four fucking god damn years and the idiots still refuse to learn the difference between socialism and communism. Just the level of ignorance makes me fume.

Before the debate, I think on Katie Couric's talk show, they had a preview of the debate. There were 3 people I believe, maybe two, but one of them was talking about how in the last debate, men were tuning out and reaching for their popcorn and snacks with all that women rights and health care stuff. Which in itself is fairly offensive, but the tone he had like he was completely disgusted that women's issues come up in presidential debates was pretty amazing. Why would men care about female health and rights issues? Most men don't have moms or sisters or aunts or grandmas or wives or girlfriends or daughters or female friends. Why, they'd rather just tune out and eat snacks than have to hear about any of that nonsense.

EDIT:
Also, the only thing "presidential" about Mitt is his hair. He's exceptionally rude (particularly in the last 2 debates because it worked for him in the first, so he went full speed with it in the next 2), will change "deeply held beliefs" at the drop of a hat if it will get him something, still thinks the Cold War is alive and well, and is openly antagonizing Russia/China/Iran out of some weird American has to have the biggest military dick thing, which we already do many times over. He's basically a caricature of an American president in a wacky 80s Russian political comedy. He also gets called on lies, then lies about those, and then lies that he lied about the first lie, because he never said any of it in the first place. Unless "presidential" is code for "white", there is nothing presidential about him. Except his fantastic hair.
His hair really is just spectacular.

Romney destroyed. I was on the fence before, but I'm definitely voting for Mitt after tonight.
I was personally shocked to learn that Obama killed Hussein before Barack had even crossed the Russian border with the Polish navy. Anyway, my vote is definitely going to Palin.

Sorry, this is really crossing the line from "devil's advocate" to "actively bullshit." Guess what, if you think acting racist is an appropriate way to express your conservative values you're STILL RACIST. Ironic racism is bullshit when hipster liberals claim to be doing it and it's damn sure bullshit when Confederate Southerners claim to be doing it.

I don't know. I can't read peoples hearts.

You can when they wear them on their sleeves.

To push it even further though is the birther movement itself racist or just dumb and uneducated?

Would there be a birther movement if he was born in Kansas?

50/50 split? Maybe in the popular vote but that means jack shit.

Not mutually exclusive. They are dumb and uneducated which is why they are so racist. And yes he could have been born in New York and that pathetic ass movement would have happened. It wasn't helped by prominent conservatives actually playing into it. It will be seen as the disgrace racist bullshit that it was in the history books 20 years from now

google "don't renig", put the white (let google autocomplete for you), communist, secret muslim, etc. Its not hard to find it. Honestly, its harder to ignore. People go to town hall's and say he's the anti-christ like its truth.

And again - I want a legit issue on equality. I'd love to see it. Because over all else, the GOP is taking steps backwards as fast as it can when it comes to social matters.

Also, don't just quote a BS Romney talking point for me. "Plenty legit issues here, Obamacare, the economy, foreign affairs, his whole flipflop on the pipeline". Tell me why. Because Obamacare is the reason why my little brother's illness didn't tank my family's savings. The economy is something that cannot be fixed in four years. You simply do not rectify a depression in less than a decade. Also, Romney said himself that he would need 8 years to fix "Obama's mistakes" tonight. The deficit as well - I'd like to see you explain Romney's non-existent math yourself if you have the time. How the hell is spending that much more, without a plan that he can even simply for our peasant ears, going to fix anything? Especially when he's planning on throwing money at everything?

This is that shit I don't like. What I don't like Obama? The specific handling of Mexico. The abrupt shift in military priorities. How he's dragging ass when it comes to same-sex anything. Education not being where I thought it'd be this time 4 years ago (especially in comparison to Bush years). Syria. There's plenty of things not to like, but holy hell... that's just too much to ask apparently.

Simple (albeit not entirely scientific) means of answering this counterfactual: go back and see how many other presidential candidates had major "birther" style movements about them.

Go ahead, we'll wait.

Oh joy. 30 mins in and about the only thing he's said is stuff he's agreed with Obama on.
To be fair, it would be hard for a Republican candidate to find any space to the right of Obama's foreign policy while simultaneously trying to appear moderate.

(And having your richest foreign policy experience be touring Chinese sweatshops.)

Yeah, doesn't surprise me. Actually, any answer other than agreeing with the president probably would be fatal damage to his campaign, lol.

Re: Birther talk: I wish I could find it now, but I remember reading an article that brought up the following question: Why is Barack's birth questioned, but not Michelle's? The author attributed this to racism, and that the reason Obama's birth is questioned is because he doesn't really act like your stereotypical black man, and Michelle acts more of what you would expect of a black woman.

An interesting line of thought even if it is wrong.

Can I ask a question?

Did anyone compile timelinks to specific Obama-ownage moments?

I'm watching the debate right now. Might miss some as I am also studying.

It's not like first ladies are constitutionally required to be born in the U.S. But I do think there's a kernel of truth to some people questioning Obama's citizenship because he doesn't fit their stereotypical views of African Americans.

How the fuck is that an interesting line of thought? The only requirement to being the first lady is being married to the president, so why would her birthplace even be and issue?

And how does Michelle act like more like a black woman than Obama acts like a black man?

Is the Communist stuff racist though? Or just uneducated?

I mean look if i had some great frigging story on how a policy would affect me or has affected me i would tell it. Truth is not much Obama, has or hasn't done really hasn't affected me at all. He's not a bad President and just because I'm not a fan of obama doesn't mean i'm waving the flag for romney

Specifically what i don't like about Obama is all the social stuff. He's pretty much for abortion if I'm getting the facts right. He doesn't even want them to be "rare" like Bill Clinton. That's a big one. The defecit is another big one, spending all this money on health care when were in a recession is unwise i think. Just this general tone of wanting to get people to like us. He had this whole apologetic thing, just sucking up for all of Bush's "mistakes" going on right after he was elected, wanting the world to love America again. That kind of struck me wrong way.

But he's handled situations pretty deftly and "presidentially" if i can make up a word. He's got tact and calmness. With the Libya and Osama stuff i thought he was dead on.

Hahahaha gotta love that video Mamba posted a page back
