Sure, they take the news negatively, I'm not sure what the lasting implication of that is though. And I'm not sure how salient of a line of attack it is versus policy questions or even questions about his business acumen, because when I read the information about the taxes, the first thing that seemed to stand out to me as an obvious line of attack is questioning his supposed and vaunted business skills.

It's less a problem of his business acumen, and more a problem of responsibility. Despite not liking taxes, and wanting them reduced, many Americans view taxes as a responsibility. Learning that a self-proclaimed billionaire who wants to lead America's armed forces, while not contributing taxes to said armed forces, didn't play well. Which is why Kaine is hammering it.

One thing I'm glad about is Trump's tax returns will be the main headline of this debate.

Um, pretty clear that was Kaine's primary goal for this debate. VP debates only matter in controlling media narrative coming out of them. Kaine is hammering the taxes thing and Trump's insult heavy rhetoric to make sure it gets play this week. The fact that Pence has let him roll over while throwing out some lame "didn't say that" denials of shit on tape just means that Kaine's mission is going better than intended.

I don't think you can find 30 seconds of this thing that doesn't include a mention about Trump's taxes.

Pence is doing better if you glance at the debate in its current form for a few seconds before flipping the channel. Pence has a more presidential look and stature, but he's not saying anything to rebut Kaine's points beyond lightly chuckling and saying "he didn't say that." He's on the defense, and the second you realize that he's been on the defense for most of the night he stops looking so presidential.

But yeah, flipping through for 20 seconds? Absolutely Pence looks like the leader here.
