It's less a problem of his business acumen, and more a problem of responsibility. Despite not liking taxes, and wanting them reduced, many Americans view taxes as a responsibility. Learning that a self-proclaimed billionaire who wants to lead America's armed forces, while not contributing taxes to said armed forces, didn't play well. Which is why Kaine is hammering it.

I think the issue is that Trump can push back with the point of the losses that led to the tax payment issue. Whether or not you find that to be a good excuse, I think he'll run with it. And because of that, I think the more lasting argument is to attack his business acumen, which is basically the central core of "who" he ran as.
