After completing HL1 Source and HL2 over the last week, I gotta hand it to Valve. They make some AWESOME FPS/Adventure games. I just hope HL3 doesn't take 6 years to complete :\
Nothing, but when it's Half-life, you don't need anything else. Valve did revolutionize the way games are created though. They split up their development team, and delegated a major task to each one, shortening the development time, and making for a better game overall. Funny thing is, that the actual Half-life was horrible, so they went back and redid with this new development style, and gave us a much better game in 1998.
I'll always appreciate Valve. They've made 2 of my favourite games ever and they don't give a damn if they have to delay a game a year (or more) to make sure it's quality, they just do it and push it out when it's done.
Well, I never said it shortened it significantly. By creating smaller teams within the larger team, they kept people from getting confused. It's not going to knock a year off of the dev. time, but it doesn't hurt either.
And I agree, Valve is great. I think if more game studios were able to follow their formula - small groups of people and an incredibly large bankroll (Gabe was a former MS employee) so no worries about publishers - our games would be of much higher quality.
