I liked it. I really loved the slo mo death... quite hilarious.

The episode brought out my teenage angst too! must be the music.

Just one question.

Why is not it called Gundam? It has the style of Gundam (robot launching, music, it has friggin' TM REVOLUTION AND MIZUKI NANA in it!), it has the framework of Gundam...so why not?

Money, more than likely. I'd imagine if you want to use the Gundam IP, you'll have to pay a pretty penny, even if you're Sunrise. New IP means no old licences to get. In addition, they might decide to deviate noticeably from the Gundam formula later.

Why would they have to pay if Sunrise owns it?

Likely answer is diversification--having more profitable franchises outside of Gundam is a good thing.

Because Bandai not funding this? I think that's the most technically correct answer.

Aniplex (the sponsor) maybe requesting like this "We want our own Gundam, yo"

I've never seen Gundam, if it were called Gundam I wouldn't have bothered, would rather have watched it from ep 1.

I'm fairly keen to see where they go with this. Why are anime protagonists always so god damned useless? This guy seems to me to be clearly inspired from Shinji Ikari from NGE, who was also equally hopeless but with a mix of daddy issues.

Maybe it's so that they've got something they can struggle with and try to overcome over the course of the series? As well as, y'know, defeating the bad guys and all.

Was OK episode, not imresssed with the protagonist. They really need to stop with these unassertivve losers. Geass was entertaining because Lelouch is actually driven and has a personality. Reminded me a lot of Gundam Seed, but Seed's initial mechas were a lot less flashy and ridiculous as these already are so I wont be surprised if this isn't nearly as good.

I thought they are easily likeable protagonists and relatable/realistic.

Somebody on AS posted an interesting theory on the other Valvrave mechs. It seems that Valvrave mechs 03 - 06 are actually 01.

I dunno about that. They all have different names, different model numbers, different heads, etc. It's definitely not just a mode change or an attachment being equipped, even though the base frame seems to be the same.

Cross posting my impression of the first episode from Anime-Gaf:

Valvrave 1

The way some people on this thread reacted to the first episode, I expected this show to leave my television and shit all over my face. Yet, I did not have to worry about shit entering my mouth, since the following did not happen. I, like DTL, actually enjoyed the first episode. It's goofy as fuck, and I won't treat this as a "serious anime." But for what it was, I had fun with it. I'll continue to keep up with it.

People thinking Shouko is dead probably didn't watch Code Geass.

People thinking Shouko is dead probably haven't consumed any kind of pulp entertainment whatsoever.

Did we see her die? No. Did we see her body? No. Does she appear in mystic glowing light in the OP? Yes.

We'll be seeing her again.

The better question is
whether she'll be back as herself or as a vampire/zombie/whatever.

Ironically enough
the Code Geass character who most resembles Shoko did in fact stay dead, but then again they actually showed her dying.

Valvrave 1

I thought it was alright. Nothing extraordinary. I find that CG fights tend to be harder to follow with my eyes than 2D though.

Also,
I'm going by the general rule that if they don't show the corpse, they're not dead. I'm sure she's wounded somewhere or the baddies kidnapped and rehabilitated her or something.

Well judging by the end of episode one, in this series
they're not even dead if they do show the corpse!

As long as they're a pilot of a Valvrave it seems. I did think it was funny how D-Elf decided to put two rounds in Haruto even though he just stabbed him in the heart.

I'm pretty sure that's so the audience had no reason to suspect that maybe the kinfe just missed a major organ or whatever. We needed to know that he was really super-duper dead.

People have been stabbed and shot before and survived though. L-Elf's mistake was that he didn't cut off the head. Clearly.

It's true. Everyone knows that you should confirm your kill and the best way to that is to remove the head from the body.

It worked.

Episode 2

This is definitely a modern Sunrise mecha show. Not only that, it has all the components people have come to expect from stuff like Code Geass and Gundam 00. It's stupid and it's entertaining at the same time, and people are going to either "love" it or "hate" it. Me? I'm just going to keep watching because it's so entertaining. They've proven with the first two episodes that they're willing to throw any sort of crap at the audience, and as far as pulling something out of their ass just to make any given moment more "unpredictable" or funny or "exciting", if they can do it, they'll do it.

As long as anyone doesn't expect a show with actual logic or intelligent writing, I think it's a pretty good time! Lots of pink explosions too! :D

Sounds like a perfect anime. How is the OP/ED

Hopefully the MC isn't an idiot like most of the characters in Code Geass.

All signs point to Negative but let's see.

How can you say Show Of The Forever, when you have a LOGH avatar? :P

1 part hyperbole, 1 part joke, 1 part general confusion, 1 part morbid curiosity which will keep me going

Pfft. All you need is the
Double tap to the skull. No one survives headshots in Sunrise anime (unless you manage to back up your subconscious to a computer interface (stupid 00)

I'd say the difference is how each show (including this one) makes use of the components. Both of them were stupid and entertaining but the equation wasn't identical nor unchanging.

Honestly, Gundam 00 was trying to tell a meaningful story about how humanity should prepare for the "dialogues to come" or whatever the overarching theme of 00 was supposed to be. Which might have been part of the problem, after all, since you usually can't go stupid all of a sudden after keeping such a straight face for the majority of the narrative. In contrast, Code Geass was more open about being full of twisty melodrama, right at the start, even if there were other elements that people like myself also appreciated in a different way. Then they placed most of the emphasis on being over-the-top and the rest is history.

Unfortunately, I guess you're right...because Valvrave strikes me as Sunrise's most sincere (yet also cheap and lazy) attempt at just giving people a lot of mindless entertainment.

Wasnt Guilty Crown the Code Geass successor?

Not for me, at least. I'd say it might come across as similar on the surface, but that doesn't really work out that well in practice. I felt Guilty Crown gravitated between being generally boring, because Shu and Inori were a literal pain to watch, and trying way too hard to remain dark in tone plus strangely serious despite all the ridiculous events.

Sounds good.

I am taking bets on
Shoko being alive

Also fuuu. The simulcast on Crunchyroll doesn't start until another 21 hours. :(

I can't watch till later. Someone spoil me :(

VAMPIRE POWERS are actually BODY SWITCH powers. Shouko survived in the dumbest possible way; she was just hiding in the car. Haruto killed dozens and became a monster for nothing.

They're not BODY SWITCH powers though. There's no switching going on other than Haruto taking over the person he bit. L-Elf wasn't in his body, he bit himself to transfer his consciousness back into his own body. It's actually... definitely a vampire power!
