VGLeaks: First look as Durango XDK (always connected, kinect required, must install)

Shotcode (the round QR code) printed directly onto the disc:

hold disc up to always-connected Kinect to register game

your read it here first

Actually the gamecode on a disk and using Kinect was already mentioned as a rumour on one of the lesser websites about 5 months ago ;)

Also I think the reason why I don't stress these things is that I install home theatres daily for people as my side job. The number of devices with that wording(always on, always connected, or some other variant) on them that never require a connection is incredibly high like possibly 100%. That plus my own homes equipment saying that as well.

Look, I'm not afraid of my internet going down. I'm afraid of THEIR internet going down. Add up all the games that had fucktacular launches this gen, the PSN outage, XBL holiday issues, and no, I'm not okay with this.

Exactly.

It isnt that I dont like this idea on a day-to-day basis. It's that on those few occasions, I am really going to want to play my Box and cant

- Read OP
- Read outrage in posts
- Reread OP
- Remembers it is a MS topic
- Leaves thread to read post about how those EA fuckers are giving you 70% of games

Ugh the persecution complex is getting tired.

Also, good to see everyone finally came around to being pro "go make a sandwich" for installs.

Yeah must be that and not every fucking MS topic being dragged down to shit

Also you missed the part where you can play the game within seconds of the install process starting? one of the 8 sentences in the OP?

All games must be installed on HDD [you can start playing few secs after installation starts]

I bet a lot of people posting in the topic did

edit: oh look new MS topic and it actually took the third post for a LIVE paywall derail.

If you are going to pause and resume instantly, that is going to require an install. Also, remember Durango is essentially a set top box, so of course it will always be online. Like your cable box. Kinect always on means that it is essential - probably voice commands.

As for DRM - that will happen as well. All software companies will probably require it in some form to reduce piracy. It's basically a computer/media server/console

People fail to forget that there are already a potential 40 million people connecting to Xbox Live every day.

Seriously, it'll be just a small packet in your xbl data going out saying that you have the game installed and you own it for life, and no other people now can install the game.

http://www.nintendo.co.uk/Wii-U/Hardware-Features/Hardware-packs/Hardware-packs-663024.html

OH GOD IT'S TRUE

The GamePad has pointer functionality and uses the sensor bar for certain games. (Unless it's using the gyroscope but all the articles I just went through say that the GamePad uses the sensor bar for positioning and pointer functions).

I love Nintendo and my Wii U but I am honestly just flabbergasted that the basic bundle doesn't come with the fucking sensor bar.

Anyway, sorry to derail the thread with this. I just can't even believe they're so cheap to not include it outside of the US.
Gamepad doesn't use the sensor bar at all (gamepad actually can be used as a sensor bar), nor does the WiiU (or Wii) need the sensor bar to work, system doesn't check if it's plugged in or not.

People want save states and the ability for the console to wake up and let you play instantly but dont want to have to install the game to do so? Talk about unrealistic demands.

I for one hope it true that they are killing the used game market. No one complains on PC.

Just install the game to hdd and put in the key. Would be great if once you did this you could re-download the game anytime just in case you lose the disc. Like you can on steam.

Sorry if this has been brought up already.

But would the reason to install the disc to run off the hard drive be to avoid any blu ray patents/license fees?

So instead of using any blu ray tech to stream/decode it would be done from the hard drive/console?

DING DING DING.

Think steam where you can start playing a bought game within seconds, and suspend and resume multiple games at the same time.

It's going to be basically a glorified and better steambox.

MS really just needs to announce this thing.
lol, so true.

That's because PC games are fuck cheap. If they block used games without lowering the price of new games, they lose my business.

I guess I'll post this since some people don't know why people are jumping to conclusions here. Almost feel like it should be in the OP, because it's extremely relevant given how spot on it's proven to be.

This is EDGE from the first of February (weeks before PS4 reveal):
http://www.edge-online.com/news/playstation-4-revealed/
Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.
...
Sony will also introduce a new, improved iteration of its PlayStation Eye peripheral
...
Sony has already earned an enormous amount of goodwill among studios working with PS4 development hardware. Privately, Sony representatives have conceded that the company made a mistake in creating such esoteric architecture for PS3, and its strategy for PS4 gives developers more opportunities this time around, notably because the hardware is much more PC-like in its makeup than PS3.
...
We have confirmed with sources that recently leaked tech specs are accurate. Though Durango devkits offer 8GB of DDR3 RAM, compared to Orbis’s 4GB, Sony’s GDDR5 solution is capable of moving data at 176 gigabytes per second, which should eliminate the sort of bottlenecks that hampered PS3 game performance. Importantly, we’ve learned that Sony has told developers that it is pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB.

Here they are on the next Xbox a few days later:
The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray discs and new Kinect
Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform. A new iteration of Xbox Live will be an integral part of Microsoft’s next console, while improved Kinect hardware will also ship alongside the unit.
...
Sources with first-hand experience of Microsoft’s next generation console have told us that although the next Xbox will be absolutely committed to online functionality, games will still be made available to purchase in physical form. Next Xbox games will be manufactured on 50GB-capacity Blu-ray discs, Microsoft having conceded defeat to Sony following its ill-fated backing of the HD-DVD format. It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.

Now, with their track record so far, and with another source showing us this "Always connected. Always online." mantra, it's not a very big stretch to assume what that means.

Steam has an offline mode.

I agree. Too many negative rumors floating around and it's making the Durango less desirable looking. Makes me even more suspicious of the rumors. Maybe there is something wrong or they could be afraid of a potential backlash?

always on + always connected

is this a requirement? as in, no online = durangNO

that will leave millions of people in the cold and i could see the ps4 gaining serious ground if this is legit.

i like the mandatory installs. disc drives are too slow now.

The royalty costs from streaming content from discs only cover video, not data. So if they wanted to avoid that they would not enable Brdisc video playback (or require an additional dongle to avoid the royalty fees like the xbox360 did at launch with dvd video)

Yeah, must be a gaf and Internet conspiracy.

Obligatory:

Low latency controller sounds good though.

I wonder how much kinect adds to the system price. Maybe it will put Xbox and PS4 in a close price range with each other.

For me personally, not being able to use the disc without activating online has made PC game lost much of their collection value. It will be the same for me if it happends to console games as well. I dont care much about it when it comes to just playing the games though.

.

Big difference is the PS4 launch event and resulting data was flowing around prior to the event. Microsoft still has Durango locked down apart from the earlier leaks.

But yes, you do make a point.

Durango will too.
They better. Not only do I doubt that there won't be an outage at some point that will cause outrage, but even simple updates/maintenance would be a pain in the ass because you can't just play your games if you want. Also, the console space is quite different from the PC space. People expect their consoles to work without having to do shit.

A lot of the information came from that EDGE article first. EDGE apparently knew about the 8GB thing even before most first party developers did. Not to mention they nailed the 15 minute, no processing penalty Share thing. They weren't just rehashing some murmurings, they were exact and offered significant new information.

edge also said in a followup article the next day that it could also be a activation code for used games. Like what we have now and what is rumored PS4 will have.
There remains a possibility that Microsoft will allow publishers to sell pre-owned game activations via Xbox Live, in much the same way that, right now, buyers of certain second-hand Xbox 360 games with online components can pay to access features such as online play. Rather than eliminating the second-hand game market, this would simply transform it into something from which publishers and developers could benefit. Looking at it optimistically, the revenues being re-routed into publishing and development would provide additional investment opportunities for new games, so what at first seems like simply bad news for consumers may end up being beneficial in the long term.

Saw you pre-edit btw. ;)

You should be able to play relevant content offline anytime you want from your HDD. Getting them onto your HDD would require connection.

I am willing to put my neck on the line and say this is what is most likely to happen.

This. Its funny because we already have reputable people in the industry stating that game prices will increase next gen to $70.

What about people who have no internet connection at all? These people do exist. Are you saying 100% that no internet connection will be required at all, from setting up the console to playing games?

No where in the doc does it say you must be online to play.

I think he means that publishers might do something similar to online passes.

That won't work because the original person still has access to the game on their hard drive. What's stopping me from getting 5 friends buying the game once and them the other four only having to buy a $10 activation code? That makes no sense.

This is in relation to the PS4.
