VGX 'Most Anticipated 2014 Game' nominees

Uh, it really is a yearly franchise at this point. On average there's been a Halo game released every year since 2007. It doesn't matter if they're spin-offs or prequels; they still count. No doubt Halo 2 Anniversary is already cooking for a 2015 release as well.

They don't count as main games. You are going to count handheld and cellphone games too then? It doesn't make sense. Also in 2008 there wasn't a halo game.

Spike has a vested interest in promoting new ips and big franchises that debut at their annual award show. If it was based purely on sales/preorders, CoD, Halo, MGS, and Uncharted would be auto locks.

But that would be boring, and does nothing but tell us what we already know about what's already popular.

Picking a number of relatively fresher ips launching first half 2014 is a much better barometer of what "next gen" trends are forming.

In that case InFamous: Second Son is a bit of an oversight, too, though.

Is it really?

Infamous isn't exactly one of the biggest game series out there. Ask your average gamer, they're all gunna know what Halo and Smash are, not so much with Infamous.

Needs more

Yup, every entry into the Halo series, whether it is mainline or a spin off, dilutes the brand. Sony have been smarter with Uncharted than with previous franchises. MS seem intent on killing the Halo brand by milking it too much with spin off games.

Where's Smash Bros.? Or Bayonetta 2? Or, hell, Tropical Freeze?

Oh, right, Spike TV. They have zero interest in anything Nintendo. Never mind, then~

I'm glad they went with all multiplatform games. Probably to avoid fanboy bickering.

That is a possibility, however an unfortunate side effect is that the list feels shortsighted.
At the very least they could have put on more entries.
That's a niche among niches, unfortunately.
If played right, an RPG can be a tremendous success. The evidence is there in Skyrim that the general public would be receptive to an RPG of some sort. It helps that Nintendo has been hyping it quite a bit, giving it the deluxe slots in its presentations.
It's quite possible that the Japanese origin will damn it, but we must wait and see.

The Witcher 3, no contest.

The fake, prsss-generated hype surrounding Titanfall is fascinating.

While it might not appear to be the greatest thing of all time, I don't find it very hard to believe that a bunch of people might be genuinely excited for the new thing by the people who made call of duty.

The amount of people who have played it that aren't in the press that enjoy it says otherwise.

If you like Call of Duty and say Titanfall is good then I'm not convinced of anything. I still haven't been convinced it is going to be different at all.

I can't anticipate a game that looks like the same rock paper scissors, 1 second to kill, who sees who first grindfest we've been playing for the last decade.

You're glad they played it safe? Avoiding controversy is a stupid detwrming factor for a list like this, but whatever, carry on.

At least SP will get exposure.

Well it could also be because there currently isn't an exclusive worth a damn coming next year on any console. I was trying to be nice though.

Dilutes the brand?

As long as they don't release the same game with new weapons every year (ala COD) then I'd say it's fine. Each Halo has been fairly different to the last. With the exception of ODST, which is essentially an expanded expansion. Hence the name Halo 3: ODST.

Isn't it, if you think about it? Is it going to be available on Mac/Linux?

(If you're saying that it might as well be a MS exclusive, I'm agreeing with you)

Eh, I was being facitious since MS would have you believe that Titanfall is an xbox exclusive but using their wording does technically tell the truth :P

*rolls eyes* Truly the yin to the OP's yang. Telling you that infamous will be a great game obviously won't go very far but you are blinded if you really feel like it is going to be the same base AAA garbage that gets sent out on a yearly basis.

Which is why i've said that it's the game that Nintendo should show at the VGX. Give it a lot of exposure. But they'll probably do what's safe and go with one of their established series.

Well, considering the audience that watches these things, any gain in popularity would be negligible if not non-existent. I do agree that they should show off more of it at VGX, though; any kind of exposure would be better than none, after all.

But I honestly wonder if it's going to make any difference in the end whether the game gets plenty of exposure or not; it's got far too many strikes against it and is pretty much destined to be catastrophic flop.

I love how the South Park complaining basically amounts to "waah wahh my console wars ammo and ultimately mediocre game wasn't on the list".

That leaked gameplay demo was all I needed to see to be convinced it's just going to be Infamous 3 after all, and I despise that series' combat and how it's basically just a 3rd person shooter covered up with superhero elements. I was hoping with a new console with a massive amount of power over PS3 they'd try new things with the gameplay instead of just making a good looking game but that's my fault when I've been so heavily invested in this industry for decades and still expect companies to try new things over playing it safe and sticking to their poor gameplay.

Sales figures and review scores of every past SSB and Mario Kart proves that wrong but whatever I guess its a opinion thing just not a popular one.

Well, like I said before, Geoff said that they approached Atlus about having Persona 5 on the show. Atlus turned them down, but he seems to even feel that certain JRPG's would be appealing to that audience. I'd argue that X would probably be more appealing than P5 just due to the battle system (that's of course assuming that P5 sticks to a similar style as the rest of the series). Then you have the large scale look that X has which looks closer to western RPG's than your typical JRPG. It's certainly worth a try. Zelda will get a lot of attention no matter when it's shown. You don't have many chances to give new IP's a lot of exposure to audience that you normally wouldn't target.

Those awards are absolutely meaningless.
Make your mind up, either the awards contribute to fake hype or their meaningless.

Every single titanfall thread includes the bullshit 'fake hype' rubbish you've trotted out, it's really boring now.

Edit

Because you personally aren't interested in it everyone else is bought off to hype it up. Now I understand you.
