Viva Piñata is game that can be enjoyed by players of any age and certainly shouldn't be dismissed because of its colorful visual style.
The Good: Accessible and fun for players of all ages; gorgeous visuals with or without high-definition display; deceptively deep; no fewer than 50 varied achievements.
The Bad: Online support is very limited; ruffians who come in and mess up all of your landscaping efforts.

If you've played The Sims or Animal Crossing and enjoyed them, Viva Pinata is a safe bet. The gameplay is more interactive and hectic, and facing the consequences of your actions, be they good or bad, is enjoyable gaming. Viva Piñata may have been designed with children in mind, but Rare has created a game that anybody with an open mind can get into and have fun with. The characters are endearing and the abounding sense of discovery can't be denied. Despite the slim interpersonal Xbox Live interaction we would hope for in a game like this, Viva Piñata has enough to explore and keep you busy that it makes for a solid purchase.

Emotional engagement in games is unusual, to put it mildly. For something to tug on the heartstrings to the degree that this does is simply stunning. Viva Piñata is an emotional sandbox unlike anything else, because its morality isn't simply a binary choice between good and evil. The freedom it affords allows you to mess with your own head and examine your own ethics as you slowly move the line of what you feel is "acceptable" in order to succeed. Sure, you can play it dispassionately -- but to do so is to deny yourself of its brilliance.

Rare has certainly recaptured its former glory here, and in producing one of the most misunderstood games of the year, it has also produced one of the finest in its history, and certainly one of the most intriguing on 360. To dismiss it as "just for kids" would be foolish. You are not too cool to enjoy this game.

Rare's magical garden may look like a game aimed squarely at children, but don't be fooled. It's one of the most fun games you'll play this year.
Pros:
Surprisingly deep strategic gameplay; breathtaking graphics that are more vibrantly colorful than anything you've seen before.
Cons:
Some of the decisions you'll need to make may be heartbreaking; Xbox Live support is minimal; controls could have been more refined.

Oh so that's why VP didn't get a 10 from 1up.... Jared didn't review it. <_<

One thing to note, I believe 1up reviewed a retail copy while ign reviewed a pre-review build (or only spent 1 day playing the final)

Just read 1UP's review. Rare is one really twisted developer. Maybe this is not the cute and cuddly game that it appears. :lol

So you sell a Whirlm [Pinata], just to see what happens. When poor little Willy the Whirlm goes for 100 coins, you can't help but feel a tinge of guilt. Have you somehow failed the Whilrm population?

Of course not. Willy's brothers and sisters will happily shag each other senseless to make more Whirlms with minimal encouragement -- so essentially, they're a source of endless income. All you really have to do is ensure that more than two of them are wiggling around at all times, and you have a sure thing on your hands. This is where that "purity of benevolence" thing starts to slip away. Success requires calculated evil. Before you know it, you have a walled-in Whirlm concentration camp, and you're no longer naming the little guys -- you're just letting the game number them automatically. As you force Whirlms 27 and 28 to breed for the last time, before sacrificing them to the coffers, it dawns on you. Wait...Sparrowmints like to eat Whirlms, don't they? So much so that it makes them horny. If you breed the little wrigglers as food, you can feed them to the birds, get them to mate and sell their offspring for three times the profit! Wait...is that evil? Who cares?!

Concentration death camps. Incest. Cannibalism. Breeding creatures as a food source. Breeding creatures for money. Seems like a very cute packaging for a very dark take on morality. I see Rare has not changed. :lol

so you've played viva pinata and resistance? Because I could see why someone would prefer pinata over gears let alone resistance.

Thanks for the quote. I may just have been sold on this game...

I think people are getting scared that pinata is outscoring a lot of their babies.. ff3/resistance/etc

Get over it, it's a great game by RARE.

There are no moneyhats.

If there are no moneyhats, why would a Resistance fan come into a Viva Pinata thread to rage against the machine? Ponder that, Forzaboy. Ponder that.

So its better than Resistance.
1UP is full of shit

From all reviews, Resistance appears to be a well-done, but fairly unoriginal FPS. Viva Pinata is something new, executed just about as well as the concept could be done. I really doubt anything is going to bump VP from being my game of the year.

Although the presence of the Davisonata pinata makes me wonder about this review. . .

You're hyping me way too much for this game.

Yes, and Kasavinary-Canary and Grumpy Gerstmann were dead giveways.

In fairness, at the time of this post (without all the reviews in on either game) Resistance is scoring higher than Viva Pinata overall. GS and IGN both gave Resistance a higher score than VP.

I can't judge for myself as I've only played one of them, but I can say that so far, Viva Pinata is certainly exceeding my expectations in every regard

Same for me.

Viva brings in some serious freshness and appeal that I though, of all companies, RARE had lost. They've really pulled out some of their past brilliance with this game. It's not Banjo-Kazooie or Perfect Dark quality, but it's close.

This game has gone from "no interest whatsoever" to "probably will buy" on the strength of the 1up review. That was really well written, and made me laugh at the thought of pinatas getting "pissed off" at each other. :lol

excellent. I am very happy to see the game score good, I can't wait to play it. Now if only it sold well to shut some of the Rare haters up - but my hopes for that are slim.

From the impressions in the official thread it sounds absolutely great and the graphics are stunning. Best looking game ever.

Yeah, when I read the 1up review, I was like 'wow, that's really dark actually'.

Viva Pinata is awesome, awesome is Viva Pinata.

Got the game yesterday and have been having a blast.

thanks GAF hype!

Oohh, lookie lookie! 1up overrates yet another Xbox 360 game. How pathetic.
I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the game as much as 1up during your obviously extended hands on time with it.
