Viva Pinata review thread (IGN: 8.5; GS: 8.3; 1UP: 9.0)

Guys, fortified concept also argued that the 360 version of COD3 wasn't the best version of the game. No matter what journalists said about the superiority of the 360 version over the PS3 version, he simply couldn't believe that 360 did something well. It's like he can't get that 360 can have good games.

Now plenty of gaffers praise Viva, the game gets its second 90% score, and he comes into this thread to ridicule the people defending this score when most of these people have actually played the game.

Is it really that hard to believe that the 360 has two good games in one week? Is the only possible explaination that reviewers are biased, or could the games simply merit the scores?
 
hey FC, guess what, Legend of Zelda:TP has a 98% so far on gamerankings. I think that threatens your standing on the PS3's superiority more than humble old Viva Pinata.

Cool down man you're gonna have a heart attack. This is not how I react and you know it because you've argued with me too many times. I actually don't like Shane. Like some other guy said, he's the Alan Colmes of 1up. He's there to be ridiculed and some times he says some pretty annoying things, although -unlike you- he has cooled down a little nowadays.

1up hatred yes. Xbox hatred no. I've actually defended MS a couple of times from immature sony fanboys which un-surprisingly are much less that the xbox ones. If I hate something is the degenerate xbox fanboys that will say anything to bash Sony after E3. You know like the 1up employees, the OA zoo crew and the teamxbox "imports" here who spent their days looking for negative Sony news to "report" and negative comments to make.

Since you seem to have more of an intellect than many of the fanboys on these boards, why would you reduce yourself to using a thread praising a game that a lot of people on these boards are quite fond of, as a launching pad for your quest against 1up? Don't you think its a little out of place?

Other than the jab at how the game is 0.5 better than resistance, there have been no mentions of anything PS3 related and it has been a pretty quiet thread.

Now, you might say its because the people in this thread are insecure, are fanboys defending 1up, by doing so, you would fail to realize that this is not the case at all. We're sick and tired of the sick that keeps pouring into these threads, xbox or sony related.

In the future, i hope you will find enough restraint to withhold your comments until the appropriate time and place.

Now can someone answer my online question plzzzzz?
 
These threads are like fly paper for trolls, we should just leave this review stuff in the official threads. (though on second thought, maybe it's good to have such a beacon for the mods)

Anyway, all I've heard about this game since it's release is overwhelmingly positive. I was skeptical before, but I plan to pick the game up this week with that Target deal (ten dollar gift card with the game).
Is it so hard for people to believe that this could be a great, unique game, when all the GAFers who've actually played it seem to believe so?
 
Wrong thread to bash a review. Viva Pinata is excellent and quite charming. I'm no spring chicken and I can't believe that I am spending a lot of time with this. Bashers or trolls have no ground to stand on here.
 
Yes I've played it. Gamertag is the same as my GAF name if you would like to check.

This game is great, but I've only been able to put about 6 hours into it this week because of work and school. Can't wait to dive into it more this weekend.

Oh... and as for the derailment of this thread, all I can do is :lol :lol :lol

These people obviously have short-term memory or selective memory and seem to be forgetting the fact that the Xbox 360 system and its games were mercilessly ridiculed by EGM/1UP since the MTV Special in May 2005, up until a few months ago.

You ever stop and think that just maybe the games have gotten better in its second generation? Probably not as that would require logical thinking.
 
these scores make me happy. with all the gears, FFXII, zelda, and resistance talk, this game has been greatly overshadowed and in some ways ridiculed just by its "kiddy" appearance. i too had my doubts but after my wife and i decided to purchase it we can't put it down. sleeper hit of the year no doubt.
 
i picked this game up yesterday, and My wife and I played it all evening. I must say that its a very fun game, way more so than i expected. Like someone said earlier, a camera mode would of been awesome to capture your ever evolving garden and pinata collection. I also think maybe the romance mini games could be a little better, but i havn't really gotten any of the bigger pinata to make woopie, so im not sure how it will progress. Definetly this game is tons of fun.

No ground, whatsoever. Viva Piñata is a 9.5 on my personal scale, and easily my GOTY. Anyone suggesting it isn't deserving of a 9. score probably hasn't perused the official thread. Biased? The 1up review reads like the impressions of any number of gaffers who've played the game.
 
Did this whole thread really just explode because 1up's score of Viva Pinata was a fraction of a point higher than IGN's and Gamespot's? They all recommend the game. Everyone who has played Viva Pinata seems to dig it. I don't understand what the problem is here. This is a quality title, certainly one of the most fun games I have played this year. It's easily on par with stuff like Gears of War and Okami. Anyone who digs sims or just wants something a little different should try this game. Just like anyone who likes shooters should play Gears and if you want a great story and adventure you should play Okami.

These incremental review scores are so frustrating. I played through and loved all these games but I would never say one game is better than the rest based on some arbitrary number.
 
Thanks for the impressions, everyone. Now that I'm done with Gears single-player, Viva is just calling my name. Even after the reviews, I was not a believer, but if GAF likes the game, too, then damn....

On another note, I'm amazed that Sephiroth and fc aren't banned due to this thread. AMAZED.

9 times out of 10, when people claim bias it is to the detriment of the thread. There is no proof that any site or publication is biased. So threads that would be full of fun discussions are brought down to one person saying "This site is biased" and others saying "They are not." And it goes on for pages and pages. People ask for a banning because the bias spewing folks are derailing the thread. If you feel that 1up is biased, start up a thread, list examples of why they are, and we can discuss it. There is no place for that in a Viva Pinata thread, especially when all three sites have virtually the same score.

Ironically, the people in this thread making the Resistance score comparisons and bitching haven't even played the full retail version of it, yet there are quite a few people in this thread who OWN Viva Pinata and seem to be enjoying it very much. Those people have every right to either agree or disagree with the review scores. It's like saying "yeah, that movie is great! I haven't seen it yet...but so many people are telling me it is!" How retarded is that? Go see it first, or in this case...by the damn game. Then bitch about it.

I have like a million examples and it's not the only forum this has been said about 1up. It's the only one I've seen that xbots are asking for people to be banned for it. Will I be banned too for saying it?

To the people who feel that 1up is artificially inflating the score of Viva Pinata, what specific problems about the game do you feel should lower its score? What part of John Davidson's review do you feel was too kind when a swift slap should have been administered? Is there any aspect of Viva Pinata that was brought up in Gamespot's and IGN's reviews that were not addressed adequately in 1up's? Do you feel you were in any way mislead after reading 1up's review and then playing the game?

EDIT - This thread is about discussing reviews of Viva Pinata. If you feel that 1up was biased in their review, that's fine. But please explain how their thoughts differed from you own or, if you haven't played the game, how their review contradicted information found in IGN and Gamespot's. If you can find no problem with their review, you probably shouldn't claim they are biased. Just because this is a forum does not give you the right to say whatever you want. Saying a site is biased without showing specific examples is defamatory. You should be banned if you are making hurtful claims without facts to back it up. If you are going to accuse 1up of being biased in this thread, please only relate it to their Viva Pinata review. The sole purpose of this thread is to discuss VP reviews so anything else would be derailment.
 
That's good to hear. I enjoy games like that, my girlfriend won't hate me when I'll play it, and my niece won't be a problem if I let her play.

I get really frustrated when people make insulting claims and refuse to back up their ideas.

If John Davidson is reading this - that was a damn good review. Very well written and, most importantly, paints a picture of what it's like to play this game. It's hard to describe Viva Pinata. It's built so much on emotion that people who have not experienced it can laugh at your descriptions. You did a good job of showing what it is like to breed animals, become attatched, and then sell them.

I love the game, but the invisibility bug is really pissing me off. Maybe it is just launch 360s that have the problem, but Rare, or MS have not commented at all and I have contacted them both. As fast as it came up for me, I was hoping a review would address the issue to give it more visibility.

Wow, that sucks. I'm glad that hasn't happened to me. Last night I did try to sell all my fences, though, and had a slight problem. I couldn't highlight one section for some reason. I was able to destroy it with a shovel, so no lasting harm done, but I was worried for a second that I would have a fence in that plot of land forever.
 
1up reviews are the best for me. Maybe its the whole bloggish vibe or the writing style but I prefer to read 1up reviews to IGN etc.

In the same way my FIRST port of call about a new game is neoGAF, because player feedback is more useful to me than most pro reviews. Not because it matches my taste, but because I can more easily guage how much someone has enjoyed a game and why and then see if its for me.

So in the same way neoGAF always sells me on a new game, 1up reviews, 1up show and 1up podcast have exactly the same vibe, and its the two of these that have just convinced me to get Viva Pinata for the same reason - it sounds like a truckload of fun.
 
Does anyone know when the release date for Viva is (was?)? I bought a copy at Best Buy on Monday and obviously there are reviews out for the game, but I wanted to start at the same time as my friend. She went to Best Buy (sold out) and two Gamestops and no one has copies of the game. The guy at Gamestop told her the game hadn't been released yet but that's got to be bs since I have a brand new unopened copy sitting on top of my tv. She called back today and he told her next Tuesday, if the game is out (which it obviously should be) where are you guys getting your copies
