It seems like Wal-Mart continues to get bigger and Best Buy has had tremendous growth. I'd bet TRU is in like 7th place at this point.

Wal-Mart & Best Buy Cited by Market Research Study as Top Retailers for Video Games

(Somerset, NJ, November 30, 2004) – Results from Phoenix Marketing International's Consumer Buying Intentions Survey conclude that Wal-Mart and Best Buy are the preferred retailers when it comes to electronic gaming purchases this holiday season. More than half of the respondents surveyed in the market research study indicate that Wal-Mart is number one with Best Buy coming in second. More than a 15 percentage point spread separates Best Buy from their nearest competitor.

This research study discovered that females are more likely than males to purchase games at mega stores such as Wal-Mart and Target, while males prefer electronic stores and online shopping. "Specialty stores such as Electronics Boutique or GameStop are preferred by younger gamers" stated David Pluchino, Senior Research Manager at Phoenix Marketing International.

"Owners of the more youth oriented Nintendo GameCube, prefer to buy games and accessories at toy stores such as Toys R Us and KB Toys, while owners of the more advanced Microsoft Xbox are significantly more likely to purchase their games at electronic stores such as Best Buy and Circuit City" added Pluchino.

True. But I myself am more of those get it on launch day ASAP at the store. Unless it was some game to add to my collection later I rarely buy online. I tried that with the Windwaker, and the FedEX guy never rang my doorbell, so I would have to drive 40 miles from 7-8 PM to pick up the damn game. Good thing my friend picked it up though.

There's only 500k population in Wyoming vs ~300 million in the US

I wonder what percentage of TRU sales are done during their buy 2 get 1 free sales.....90%, maybe, I sure wouldn't go there at any other time of the year. When that sale hits however, I clean them out. :)

I can understand Best Buy. Many people will want to buy a CD or DVD along with their game, and the $5 off coupon also helps tremendously.
 
Interesting. If anybody remembers that Wedbush Morgan report that was leaked earlier this year they had the market shares for 2003.

This was just console games. Computer game market share was different.

Well. Hold on to your money. The new economic report on WALMART says that they've had huge profit reductions and there is talk that they'll be cutting prices on goods to get consumer spending up + Profits up. Apparently Walmart is SO huge that their economic/business well being has MAJOR impact on the US economy.

So the NPD numbers are a lie? So for example, if a certain game or system is selling like hotcakes at Gamestop, it'll also be doing the same at Walmart?

Seriously, though, imagine what would happen if Walmart decides that game software isn't selling well enough and decrees that all games will be $30 or below from now on. The industry would shudder!
 
Man, people gotta go to Circuit City more for games. They have as good a selection as the specialty stores and have more deals.

Best Buy and Walmart benefit from better selection and prices for everything else.


Oh well. Analysts are predicting the demise of Circuit City in the next 10 years. Guess this is just more writing on the wall.

I wonder how much longer before Fry's gets enough stores to make it on the list.
 
Shit, My circuity city has a good PS2 selection but it's GC/XBOX/PC selection is complete utter shit. They do have a pretty good GBA section though. And it's about a 5 minute drive from my house instead of a 15-20 min one to BB but I usually go to the EB or Gamestop stores right around the corner (pain in the ass to get PC games there though)

I'm concerned about Walmart deciding to refuse to carry games based on content, which they already do with respect to CDs. I can just see them deciding to ban M-rated games one of these days, or games featuring characters of ambiguous sexuality.

Where do you live in Wyoming? Unless it was a very small town, you wouldn't have to drive anywhere to get to a non-Walmart store. In Green River, I can get games at Pamida, and there is an EBgames 15 minutes away in Rock Springs. Not only that, but Hastings is a good place to get games, and K-Mart is also in option. Laramie has both K-Mart and Hastings, so Wal-Mart isn't the only choice for games.
 
I buy a lot of my games at Walmart and BestBuy mainly because they either always have a deal going on or the games are cheaper than anywhere else. For example, I got GTA:SA and Sly 2 both $15 cheaper at Walmart than any other store.

Even worse, what if they only offer censored game releases (which they also do with music). GTA without hookers. MK without fatalities. That could be an added strain on game markers (coding a regular release and a Walmart release).

Dude, they already do that. Giants: Citizen Kabuto had the blood switched from red to green for Wal-mart to carry it.

not where I live, CC is always a mess compared to BB, I also don't bother going to CC anymore because they do alot of baiting, the stuff in their ads are never in stock

Well, Circuit City stores are usually much smaller than Best Buy, and Circuit City is messier and seems to have way less in stock. That's definitely why CCs are a dying breed of store.
 
When I was in best buy last week a soccer mom asked me if i knew where "granD turismo" was while i was messing with the DS on display.

when i was waiting to checkout there were 2 other obvious moms with copies of mario party 6 in the line
