Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

I admit, got a chuckle out of me.

Honestly though, even if the graphics did get downgraded, if the game turns out to be fun who cares? Titanfall has some really bad textures, but the games enjoyable and I can get over those textures.

That's fine. But that's ignoring the issue that people were lead to believe something else over a series of videos, demos, and screens where gameplay is concerned. And that Ubisoft has done this before with Far Cry 3 and likely The Division. Not to mention that they seemed to do just fine in making a beautiful game out of AC4 and seeming to drop a few things that were gained from the previous generation in this game.

Don't get why people feel the need to change the narrative. No one is really arguing the game will be bad (except those who don't care for AC gameplay) or won't be able to enjoy it, but this game was THE next gen launch game for a lot of people from what was shown regarding the visuals. The gameplay was interesting, again those not against AC, but it wasn't what grabbed people and told them they needed to sign up for the new generation (or a nice PC).

It doesn't have to be one or the other.

Wow I though people overreacting here because I haven't seen the story trailer but now, ugh, the hell it's happened to the lights system? It seems a ps360 game how flat appears. This time Ubi has overtake theirself.

That Twitch stream chat is going to be terrible. Here's what's currently going on:

Timfl1: is this the channel for the watch_dogs ps2 gameplay stream in 2h?

Anybody catch the kotaku article: http://kotaku.com/the-disappointment-of-video-game-guns-1538151848

What happened to this game?

That article resonates with my thoughts about the game. When I saw it at E3 2012 I thought this will be a game that looks great AND it has a new idea that seems cool and it's not heavily based on shooting. The hero was supposed to be a hacker that through his skills get access to the CTOS and get the power associated with it. Of course he will need also a gun, but he was not supposed to be Machete. Maybe it's just the trailer. Even the story seems less interesting now.

If this happens with Division then there would be no "they didn't know next-gen specs" excuses.

This kind of marketing technique needs to die already, I don't even think the games looks bad (apart from that gif and some spots) but they set people up for disappointment and mislead them.

Show the game when it's ready to be shown and it's representative of the final product, not an hard concept to grasp. And, if some things change down the line, just be upfront about it.

You know how long it would take for games to be shown if that was the case? We'd see reveals a week or two before launch, if that. With DLCs fixing graphical glitches and errors and day one patches, the reveals would end up being just the same -- not a representation of the final product.

It would be hard to be upfront about bullshots.

Ubisoft should start running footage with a * in the bottom that reads

*Not representative of the final game. And by that we mean it'll look like shit compared to this.

So what rockstar does showing off worlds, characters and systems isn't representative of the final product? That stuff isn't shown just a week or two before release.

Weirdly, I think the original game's graphics would be achievable by another development team. AS OTHERS HAE POINTED OUT, Sleeping Dogs looks great and I can imagine thse developers could push the PS4 quite well.

I agree, it does really suck and Ubi need to quit doing this shit because it's becoming a joke at this point, granted we all care about our eye candy because nearly every resolutiongate thread gets a ridiculous amount of pages. However there are people in this thread (not saying you specifically) who see the game's been downgraded from the original vision and react with "this game is trash wtf ubi" or something and it's like yeah the graphics have been hit but doesn't mean the games trash.

I say original vision because I always thought that the reveal was a tech demo, at the time it looked miles ahead of anything on the market, so I wasn't suprised when it started to look worse, that doesn't excuse them from doing it though because it is false marketing. I think because it was supposed to be a launch game it might have been downscaled as well, because AC4 doesn't look that next-gen even on PS4, especially if you compare it to IFSS or probably Arkham Knight. But in that regard we have been misled as consumers because that's what they showed us, they said it was PS4/Xbone footage and that's wrong and even if the game is OMG AMAZING BEST THING EVAH! I'll still be annoyed they lied to us.

Don't compare a beast like Rockstar to Ubisoft. This is UbiSoft game, this is a Ubisoft issue, period.

nothing like shenmue, basically GTA...
cat-crying.gif

I'm a huge Shenmue fan, and while Sleeping Dogs doesn't bear much resemblance to it, it's still very much worth playing. Despite being a game in the same vein as GTA, its Hong Kong manages to be one of the more atmospheric and detailed environments in a sandbox.

This Q & A is gonna be a terrible catastrophe.

I dunno, the game looks fine to me. As long as they nail gameplay and atmosphere and story, I can wait for WD2 to boost graphics into the stratosphere.

In how many games are there downgrades on the level of Watch_Dogs or Far Cry?

I'm not talking about only showing near complete footage but stuff like this, Halo 2, that killzone video, or even Biohock Infinite is misleading of what the game will actually be. They just take concepts and present them as a game that you will play and most of the times is CG or shown in high-end pcs. It's misleading.

Do you know what false advertising is?

She said the game has crappy graphics, lol.

So what? Most indies games have crappy graphics and there is no problem with saying that. (Mind, I love indie games and play a lot of them.)

Fine, she is PR and it's nothing you would expect to hear from a PR person, but she clearly didn't want to put Outlast in a bad spotlight.

Also, you forget the part where she praised the gameplay.
You can't trash a game while at the same time still praising the game...
I assume NeoGAF logic is at hand here.

Also, she has a channel with other Ubisoft employees I just noticed: https://www.youtube.com/user/UbiSmalltalk
Everything is in her (and mine) native language (Dutch) but from what I've seen, she is a very humble and down to earth person who I would love to hear more from.
I even subbed to the channel, mostly because they don't do strict PR shows where everything is choreographed or anything.

All in all, I think NeoGAF is in the wrong here for making an elephant from a mosquito...

I will still keep my preorder. Waited long enough... Just please be good please. If some PS4 gameplay comes up and it looks not good, then I will cancel. Still got time.

I can't believe someone posted an article based on this woman's twitter account, she's obviously oblivious. It's one thing for GAF to poke fun, but that's harsh.

Yeah , it's not cool.

She probably shouldn't have commented, she certainly shouldnt have mentioned Outlast , but the people attacking her and a website running a story on her comments is pretty low.

It would be okay if the mood of the story matched. It does not. It's like setting Blade Runner in sunny LA.

I think you nailed it. What happened to the stormy, fall time (low light on the horizon), gungy Dystopian Chicago of the future?

Half expecting him to run a GTA triathlon and go surfing...

Yea... I agree. A few ppl mentioned the lighting. Its something about the daytime lighting. Like its too sunny or something.

Pathetic by Ubisoft.

Create a 'game' which never existed to create hype, then show off the real game proving they were full of bullshit. It's not even a small difference, it's like a whole different game.

It's false advertising, really.

Wow, talk about false advertising! The E3 2012 reveal made Watch Dogs look like the first next-gen game even before next-gen HW had been announced.

Now in 2014, it's clear that Watch Dogs is very much a last-gen game specifically designed for the PS3/360. It does have a port to PS4/Xbone to cash in on next-gen customers, but only has higher resolution graphics and minor gameplay differences. This looks similar to the cash in next-gen port of Tomb Raider by SE, though that at least was 1080p/60fps (PS4).

After looking at Infamous:SS, Watch Dogs is lagging significantly in being a next-gen open world visual spectacle. If GTA V shows up on next-gen HW, it is likely to look better than Watch Dogs. Maybe Ubisoft can match the original E3 2012 trailer with Watch Dogs 2.

Publishers and game developers need to drop the cross-gen ports and focus on next-gen. Hopefully Batman: Arkham Knight is the tip of the iceberg of next-gen only games.

Do you know what false advertising is?

Of course I do, look I ain't disputing the fact that this practice (especially by Ubi) of showing a game that looks great graphically and then down the road looking worse is terrible but saying the game is going to be trash because of the downgrade is silly. I'm just saying if the game is fun to me then even though I will be annoyed that I ain't getting as much eye candy as I was promised, I won't let it spoil my experience.

So that's as much of an official confirmation on a radical downgrade as we can dream of.
Nope. Think or it more of an acknowledgement that you'll all be going around in circles about the same stretched JPEG or compressed GIF until we release more footage (or indeed the game :D).

Also, probably worth stopping by the Twitch stream - you can post your questions on twitter.

I agree. It's a slap in the face to all of us. We need to act with our wallets now. Don't buy this terrible looking game.

And it doesn't seem like the hardware is incapable, or that good graphics and day footage are mutually exclusive:

Watch Dogs is missing some vibrancy that just makes it look visually dull seemingly often. Certainly too many times for selected B-Roll footage.

Lets wait first whether Infamous will indeed looks like those gifs (i agree those look great) during daytime. Those were very early pr stuff and the last pics and videos all looked way darker and didn`t have that great lighting in place.

My feeling says me that the final game wont support this lighting condition.
