Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

That article resonates with my thoughts about the game. When I saw it at E3 2012 I thought this will be a game that looks great AND it has a new idea that seems cool and it's not heavily based on shooting. The hero was supposed to be a hacker that through his skills get access to the CTOS and get the power associated with it. Of course he will need also a gun, but he was not supposed to be Machete. Maybe it's just the trailer. Even the story seems less interesting now.

I completely agree. Aside from the graphics having been scaled down A LOT, it also appears to have been dumbed down.
It's all about sales; games in which you need to think don't appeal to the lowest common denominator. Shooting guns is about as simple a concept as possible, which is why games that revolve around shooting have such a broad audience.

If this happens with Division then there would be no "they didn't know next-gen specs" excuses.

This kind of marketing technique needs to die already, I don't even think the games looks bad (apart from that gif and some spots) but they set people up for disappointment and mislead them.

Show the game when it's ready to be shown and it's representative of the final product, not an hard concept to grasp. And, if some things change down the line, just be upfront about it.

Publishers need to follow Nintendo's example imo. What you see in reveals, previews and trailers is what you get. Remember the people ages ago saying that the 1 second worth of footage of Gomorrah was CGI in the original announcement..?

Nintendo don't do things like that. No bullshots, no graphical downgrades due to the early footage being done on whopperdonger PCs. If anything, Nintendo games end up improving in the eye candy department.

Love them or hate them you've got to give them credit for their honesty.

So what? Most indies games have crappy graphics and there is no problem with saying that. (Mind, I love indie games and play a lot of them.)

Fine, she is PR and it's nothing you would expect to hear from a PR person, but she clearly didn't want to put Outlast in a bad spotlight.

Also, you forget the part where she praised the gameplay.

You can't trash a game while at the same time still praising the game...
I assume NeoGAF logic is at hand here.

Also, she has a channel with other Ubisoft employees I just noticed: https://www.youtube.com/user/UbiSmalltalk
Everything is in her (and mine) native language (Dutch) but from what I've seen, she is a very humble and down to earth person who I would love to hear more from.
I even subbed to the channel, mostly because they don't do strict PR shows where everything is choreographed or anything.

All in all, I think NeoGAF is in the wrong here for making an elephant from a mosquito...

That's her personal Twitter yes. She also handles the main UbisoftBE Twitter, but all pr and marketing employees here have a personal one called 'ubi*name*be', where they usually talk about personal stuff and also share ubisoft related things. But the official Ubisoft Belgium account is a different one yes.

And I don't think she wanted to shit on Outlast at all. It's just a hyperbole to make her statement more firm. We all do that from time to time. (at least I do that, I admit)

Lets wait first whether Infamous will indeed looks like those gifs (i agree those look great) during daytime. Those were very early pr stuff and the last pics and videos all looked way darker and didn`t have that great lighting in place.

My feeling says me that the final game wont support this lighting condition.

what? Why would you feel that way?

Showcasing this game at every PS4 event was such a waste of time for Sony.

Eh...every year people on GAF say the same thing about Assassins Creed and the game still sells well. We'll see with Watch Dogs as its had a more publicly turbulent development...but yeah. I think its a little too soon as the gameplay previews have sounded positive.

what? Why would you feel that way?

Probably cuz of Shadowgate heh

Watching the live streams last night and seeing their lighting engine at work I have no doubt they will hit those gifs without problem. SS looks incredible and teh promo stuff is proving to have been legit.

WD must be suffering from it's cross gen(ness)

According to previews and both footage, all that stuff is there. Shooting is just more mass appealing than context options.

Nope. Think or it more of an acknowledgement that you'll all be going around in circles about the same stretched JPEG or compressed GIF until we release more footage (or indeed the game :D).

Also, probably worth stopping by the Twitch stream - you can post your questions on twitter.

I don't think most people here are complaining based on the car gif. At this point we've seen the trailer. What's the excuse for that? The video editor chose parts of the game that didn't showcase how it still looked like the 2012 reveal?

If there is enough of an outrage we will probably get a video from Ubisoft showing off the graphics. Remember how all the bitching about stealth in Splinter Cell made them put out videos to desperately try to convince us that it still is a stealth game?

And then it actually ended up being a pretty kickass stealth game.

Game has gone gold, gameplay videos have been streaming and it pretty much look like this.

Wow, talk about false advertising! The E3 2012 reveal made Watch Dogs look like the first next-gen game even before next-gen HW had been announced.
...

DING! DING! DING!

And this is exactly why the game looks terrible compared to the reveal. In all likelihood they had a "rough idea" of what the final hardware would be on the new consoles and created the demo on a PC with the specs they thought would be in the new machines.

Clearly they aimed a little high.

Either that or Ubi gone be Ubi...

Around the time of the reveal, developers such as EPIC were trying to convince console makers to release 2.5TB machines.

They obviously didn't get there.

The reveal was probably targeting those specs, hence the downgrade now. XB1 is half the power the developers wanted so sacrifices are made.
... what?

No, seriously... what!?

She's a gem.

What the fuck am I reading.

Ubi just needs to stop lying to us with these fake gameplay videos that get us all hyped. They are by far the worst offender at this and the game may actually end up being good but it's being overshadowed by all this downgrade talk. It wouldn't have been a downgrade if we never saw that amazing looking E3 2012 video but then again, the game wouldn't have had nearly as much hype behind it either.

That's the price Ubi must pay for getting so much hype from a baldfaced lie.

Yea... but the PC version should at least still look like the reveal. Apparently, all versions got downgraded.

No, seriously... what!?

What are you confused by? In 2012 it is highly likely that they didn't have anywhere near final specs on the would-be new machines. They had no choice but to take a guess based on what they knew.

They obviously aimed higher than Sony and Microsoft. Epic did this as well in their attempt to get Sony and MS to make the machines as beefy as possible.

EDIT: BloddMoney - yes I agree with you completely, it makes no sense for the PC version to look WORSE than the original considering PC hardware has only improved over time.

She's a gem.

At this point my protective instincts are kicking in and I hope she doesn't get hit by a hurricane of complaints. She's doing her job. Very clumsily admittedly, but please don't take out your frustration on her. It's the equivalent of seeing a pee stain in the carpet and finding your puppy looking at you very guiltily.

Seen quite a few Livestream events in 1080p, even with compression, the game looked fantastic, if not better than those GIFS at times. The game has went GOLD, its safe to say we are getting great graphic fidelity to what we have seen. Will look even better IRL.

Exactly. If the PC versions weren't downgraded I would understand but they DOWNGRADE THE FUCKING PC VERSIONS TOO.

This tells me that these Ubisoft reveal videos are every bit as bullshit as EA's are, perhaps even worse because they go to greater lengths to fool us into thinking that they're actual gameplay.

This trailer?

It looks better than the original reveal to me.

I'm going to assume you're serious. If that's the case I hope you realize that most of those scenes are probably cutscenes and not with in-game graphics, considering the amount of footage to prove otherwise. There are few glances at gameplay amidst the clear video cutscenes in there.

Speak for yourself. I can't see it.

There is nothing obvious about it. I still can't see it.

I just skimmed this thread, and I'm not seeing any downgrade. Can someone show me the most clear-cut examples?

I'm not seeing it. So I'm not convinced.

Where's the obvious downgrade?

It looks better than the original reveal to me.

True, seems like there a quite sharp character shadows in those gifs but those were basically not present in some of the more recent videos.

You bought those consoles specifically to play Watch Dogs?

watch dogs, forza etc were a big part of the initial console hype
specs were known already and people went LOOK it DOES look like a full gen leap SEE

they looked proper next gen and it helped get people get excited for these new consoles

people gave the 2005 e3 shit for all the bullshit cgi trailers, this is no different

So what were you saying 'we've seen the trailer'? Where's the obvious downgrade? Were you talking about a different trailer?

Considering it was the first 'next gen' game shown, I'm sure plenty of people did. Especially more casual people who haven't kept up with the game.
PR representative.

This thread would be a little different right now if the PR was coming from "ubirep17" who didn't have their photo posted on the web. Just a theory.

That's one hell of a theory you have there.

In my opinion a $400 gpu could push that game (the Watch Dogs shown in the reveal).

That was in night time footage. Have you got any daytime footage to prove your case? From what they said it is a specific issue with the fact that there are thousands of light sources being cast at night. I don't think there is a game with that many dynamic lightsources, so they had to cut it. During the day, shadows should be cast normally. Certainly in the footage released at E3 that seemed to be the case...

They probably don't care enough about the PC version to fork off a radically different build for the port.
