What game convinced you to never buy another game on release again?

If you've ever gotten to that point, what game did it for you?

For me it was Gungrave Gore. I was already on the fence about buying games on release, but this was a long awaited sequel to a 20 year old game, so out of excitement I pre-ordered it. Big mistake, the game was totally broken. It took months for it to be fixed with patches, and even then, they released an "Ultimate Edition" on another platform that had a bunch of DLC none of the other platforms got.

I was so disappointed and swore off getting any new games within the first six months of release after that. Any of y'all have similar stories?

One of the most disappointing day-one purchases I made was Resident Evil 6 on the PS3. As a huge fan of the series, I went in expecting the same thrilling survival horror experience I loved in earlier titles, but what I got felt more like an action blockbuster trying to cater to everyone.

Call of Casual Modern Garbage 3.

But I did sneak in one or two Day 1 games since, but I assure you it isn't or never will be commonplace for me to do it again. Fuck modern gaming

I won't say I never pre-order anymore because Capcom / From Software usually do me right and you can get 15-25% off a lot of their releases on PC from the right places early on. 99% of the time I'm happy with the games I'm picking out.

But a recent punch in the gut that made me scale back and definitely pre-order less was Just Cause 4. I know this isn't a high end franchise but I really loved Just Cause 3 and I was really excited for the sequel. It was just a complete failure on launch with absolutely muddy textures, PS3 era graphics, less features than the game before. Couldn't even blow up bridges anymore in a game about large scale physics destruction.

Damn that is rough. To go into a game with excitement, only for it to be a GaaS title, and not even knowing what that is yet. That'd definitely do it for me, too.
All the concept art made me think it was going to be some action-adventure game where you played a scavenger on various planets. Then I started it up and I've got dinklebot and a bunch of basic shitty missions and no story.

I found out that day that GaaS is not for me.

I've never been so traumatized by a bad purchase that I won't buy another game on release day. I grew up buying bad games because all we had were a couple of screenshots on the back of a box. If Sword of Sodan couldn't put me off of day 1 purchases no game could.

I rarely buy games on launch day because I just don't feel FOMO anymore. Few games are actually finished when they release these days so there's no hurry to buy them. I bought a few last year and have no regrets. Nothing so far this year is looking like a day 1 for me.

I'm apparently not smart enough to completely stop buying some games new. I think Starfield was the last one. For me, it isn't all games, it is developer specific. I no longer buy day one from a long list of developers. It is still safe to buy many games from Japanese developers, as they seem to release games basically complete day one, in particular the types of jRPGs I like.

I think I had this lesson hammered into me over a decade ago, just by watching the countless launch fiascos covered by TotalBiscuit.
Mass Effect Andromeda. What a pile of shit. One of the very very few games that actually pissed me off playing through it.
I bought this on sale and regret the purchase. At least I bailed on the game early.

None in recent memory. I think I do pretty good research for my day one purchases. The next day one buy will be Civilization 7. I hope it's good!

FFXV was pretty disappointing. Even more so because I was expecting more from the PS4 Pro patch.

Dragon Ball Kakarot was pretty disappointing.

MGS V was not what I was expecting; repetitive mission structure sucked and I didn't finish the game.

FFXIII.

Trust can be earned in rare situations, and demos go a long way, but even then they can lie. RE3 Remake demo made me think it was going to be a wide game with choices and the demo essentially ends where that ends rather than it being a small taster.

I ended up getting it on sale a year or so later for $5 on PS4 and quite enjoyed it, even finished it!

I guess I just have low standards lol

I was so convinced Marvel's Avengers was going to be a great on-going title to really sink my teeth into. One of the few games I pre-ordered and bought one of the better expensive versions. I did the same with Outlaws for the head start, only to lose my save due to bug. Obviously I didn't learn my lesson. Never again.

FFXIV is perhaps the biggest mistake of all time, and it kills me because I played the beta and knew in my bones it was terrible. I convinced myself that the release version would fix the issues and be totally different. What the fuck was I smoking.

Duke Nukem Forever, I got caught up in the hype.

Maybe with Boomer shooters and what not it might be the time to re-release it.
I would like to replay it again to see.

Other than that I’m not sure. Nowadays if it’s a Nintendo game and it’s been regarded as good. Day one purchase. Other devs maybe not as I expect it to be sent out unfinished and patched along the way. Which is a piss take. you don't buy a car full price and they go yeah the breaks might not work well fix that.
So why does it work with a game. If they keep releasing games unpolished why charge full price.

Don’t get me wrong patches are great as they can add quality of life updates and if there is as in the case of doom classic on the switch some bugs that need ironing out that’s ok. But when a lot of the game isn’t fully finished why not just take the extra time to fix it ? It’s almost like the equivalent of “we’ll fix it In post” lol.

Not exactly what you're asking, but FFXIII turned me from buying any mainline/spinoff FF game blindly based on the FF brand. Otherwise, switching to PC as a primary platform pretty much curbed my pre-order/day 1 habits. Now I patiently wait until $30 or less + bugs are fixed + mods. There are always exceptions that I want to have on day 1, but maybe 1-3 games per year now.

A few have (I still do on occasion though..)

Most notable that pissed me off for a few days, even took it back the next day for a refund stating the servers didn't work.. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Total tripe.

Rebought it for most systems for around £1 years later. Still find it tripe.

What a fall from grace.

None really, but I’ve become a lot more careful to check if the game requires any huge day one patches, are always online/DRM heavy, what content is actually available on the disc etc. etc.

There are a lot of red flags to consider these days.

I still occasionally pick up some day1 releases, but Forza Motorsport convinced me not to buy always online games on release day ever again. Doesn't matter if it's a small or big publisher, they're not going to handle the servers working right.

Command and Conquer 4, might be the most disappointing game of all time. Worst still EA LA proved they could make a good C&C game and then put out this total shit.

I was skeptical, but bought into the hype. It was not enjoyable.
Not never, but I've become more careful.

Always blindly purchased GTA games, worth it for the music alone. Didn't enjoy the game or the music much with 5.

It was not one game.. it was multiple factors
- Games Get Expasions Later and I dont like coming back to games to play them
- Bugs are a part of any launch now and will stay for months, early adopters ar basically beta testers
- games also now improve their perfomance over time with new patches gaining better image/ fps
- complete and total lack of confidence in ANY previews or reviews by the mainstream media
- plus they are cheaper 6 - 12 months later.

Best decision I ever made.

Just bought Jedi Survivor very cheap and with the latest patch I can play it much better now. The game was a mess.

I'm a big fan of strategy games, so the start of this game just killed me, since I've always been a huge fan of this series.
I honestly don't know a game that had a worse start - SimCity (2013). It was so bad that you would have to try really hard to achieve the same results. (The game basically killed Maxis as a studio.)

That picture is hilarious. What even is the point of putting the tiny bandage ?
