What game convinced you to never buy another game on release again?

GTA V actually...

After buying both GTA IV and V on release and then dropping them I just finally realized that impressive urban simulator doesn't necessarily mean good game.

Dragons Dogma 2. I have purchased a couple of games since then day one, but this year I've put a halt on almost all day one purchases. Simply because the games are either fucked or need work. Also I'm of the mindset that I'll play the best version of that game later.

Mass Effect Andromeda.

I disliked it almost immediately. Didn't enjoy the character selection screen and was equally disappointed in the fighting. From the 1st fight on something always felt off about the combat.

I played and enjoyed dragon age inquisition but that's been the last Bioware game I played

Dragon Age Inquisition. I couldn't play it for weeks due to DirectX error messages. It was only fixed a couple of months later. By then I already moved on and lost any motivation picking it up again. Ever since then I only buy day one on very rare occasions.

Day 1 purchases are super rare for me. All I can remember are TLOU2 and Hogwarts Legacy. I do regret buying them physical though and not being able to sell them after completing them.

Cyberpunk 2077 was that game, then I broke and bought the Starfield expansion to play early.
I convinced myself I would never buy on release and then convinced myself to forget all about it.
Yep, Cyberpunk was the game for me that broke the camel’s back so to speak. Was looking forward to the game for years, and all the previews from “influencers” and media were amazing (remember the yellow chairs given to shills?).

I have broken the day 1 rule couple of times since but mostly stick to it and don’t pre-order… except that I Did pre-order FFVII Rebirth.

$40 was the right price for SE to tempt me and I love the game. Fingers crossed SE won’t completely f up the port.

I hardly regret my purchases, but I'd say Horizon Forbidden West. I bought it on release, played a little then Elden Ring came out and I forgot about it. When I dropped Elden Ring after multiple playthroughs/Co-op/PvP the game was already on PS+ Extra. It was the fastest sony exclusive to go to the catalog. It did eventually leave the service but it felt like a punch in the gut getting it only to see a few months later being offered on the subscription.

I don't think I have any other recent gamin regret. Maybe on Genshin in july 2021 when Inazuma dropped and the Raiden banner took all my primogems and I got Raiden to C2, her weapon, and no Sara (her main support at the time). But that means just another day for gacha players.

Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II for GC

Mod GC, import game, buy silly keyboard/controller hybrid

Then they release a new JP version of game to work with the later US version in order to patch a dupe trick, segregating the early adopters forever.

And the fix didn't work anyway.

My enthusiasm for gaming dropped massively that gen, as the biggest fan you were suddenly always fucked first.

None really. Some regret has always been part of the experience. And I don't have ADHD, so I can easily wait for patches if so be.

Keep in mind I started buying games when the internet didn't exist. We bought games judging by the back and front cover back then :messenger_grinning:

Think the last game is bought at launch was Call of Duty (1). It wasn't like that game was broken or anything I just don't really buy in to hype cycles and am quite happy to wait several months or years for a good price, fixes to have been made, and for the impressions of the game to be solidified.

Silent Hill 4 was the last game I bought on media blackout. The first 3 games were so amazing and the premise sounded great so I decided to buy it blind to avoid being spoiled. Worst 50$ I ever spent so now I make sure to do my research before a buying game.

For me it was the 1-2 punch of Starfield and Final Fantasy XVI. Thats when I decided I was done paying the highest price just to play the worst possible version of the game.

It’s not just bugs but also significant QoL upgrades and new feature that get added after launch. So many times I’ve toughed it out with some poorly designed mechanic only for them to fix it after I finished the game.

Of course the worst of these was XENOBLADE CHRONICLES 2 holy shit. Hours and hours of grinding to get the good blades like Kos-Mos. Unskippable core opening animations. Grinding Tiger Tiger to power up Poppi before they added easy mode. I still have PTSD from that shit.

I stopped preordering due to Vice City. Saw it in stores a couple days after release and was like, "if this highly popular game is still available then preordering isn't needed."

Game? Try the entire PS4/XB1 gen.

Once the always-connected console became mainstream and digital distribution became standard... we have never since got an actual complete bug-free game at launch.

The sad truth of the matter is that the people that buy games at launch (and even worse at full price), get the worst version of that game.

I only ever bought 2 games at launch, God of War 2018, and i pre-ordered it as there was buy at 100 bucks and get 15 back promo.
The other one was God of War Ragnarok which i kinda regret paying $70 for, while i enjoyed the gameplay mostly and it's a great game, i didn't like the plot.
Don't see any game in the foreseeable future i will buy day one, not KCD2 nor GTA6, which both look awesome.. probably only GoW Egypt will do.. and then i will complain again lol.

Outlaws hiring a new creative director and overhauling the game's systems to fix it 3 months post launch AND BOASTING ABOUT IT, as if it were a favour to people who paid £90 for it on release and completed it weeks before was a bit of a sickener, so that.

For me it was Ultima 9, that game was a total turkey. It was a buggy mess that struggled to run. They even got the lore wrong.

That game needs a remake really bad.

Final Fantasy 15.

Square hyped it up with an amazing trailer showcasing Leviathan going nuts in the siege of Insomnia. At the time I was a massive FF fan (still is somewhat) so naturally I was really excited about it. And then when the game releases I realized that 99% of the trailer shown was cut from the final game. In fact, the were so much missing content at release that the story didn't make a lick of sense, pacing was completely broken, gameplay and systems wasn't finished etc. It was a disaster. Square patched it up eventually with the Royal edition but the damage was already done. This was the first time I've ever been so burnt, to the point of feeling bamboozled, that buying games day 1 from there on was now reserved for a select few devs that actually delivers. Otherwise I wait. Either for the game to be feature complete or dropping in price. Usually it's a combination of both. Fuck fomo and fuck devs and publishers who uses fancy trailers and false footage to sell their shit.

Fucking Brutal Legend. Played the demo, and it seemed like this awesome action adventure game. Bought it Day One only to find out the entire opening sequence is a bait and switch. So pissed.

Hadn't quite learned my lesson and bought Diablo III day one, since D2 was legendary. Quickly found out it was geared entirely towards making people use the real money auction house.

Haven't pre-ordered since then.

Not exactly what you're asking, but FFXIII turned me from buying any mainline/spinoff FF game blindly based on the FF brand.
Same. FFXIII is what killed my blind fanaticism for the brand. Then they released FFXIV 1.0, which had to be completely overhauled, then FFXV, which wasn't even a complete game.

Stopped caring about FF after all that, which is sad because I loved/grew up with 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. It was the end of an era.

Damn, since way back then? Makes sense though, that does sound shitty that they segregated the player base of an already niche online game.
