What we know about Legend of Zelda Wii prior to E3 2010

Regardless of art, I think that Terada's vision parallels what I want out of a Zelda game.

  • Dark overall tone
  • Very difficult fights that leave you sweating all over the controller
  • Exploration of a vast overworld to find dungeons
  • A serious adult link against near impossible odds every encounter

What I don't want to see in the upcoming console version(s)

  • Young Link
  • Enemies that act like cartoon characters
  • Linear dungeon approach
  • One gimmick to hinge the whole game off of
  • Developing relationships with NPCs or doing any subquests for them. Or at least keep them optional.

I suppose many will disagree with me and that's fine. We all have our favorite version for various reasons. I just want the game to be very basic and focus on exploration, even in dungeons with no linearity. If i walk into a dungeon I happen to find, perhaps I might just get wrecked because the enemies are so tough I want to run out as fast as possible. I'll make a note of it and return later. Give me the option to mark my map where I found it and I'll return.
I don't disagree. This is basically an exact copy of my do/do not want lists.

^5!

(I'm gonna go ahead and preemptively clarify that "dark overall tone", at least for me, does not mean "matoor story lolz!" because I know a lot of people probably think they're synonymous.)

I think the series' concept art reached a low, low point with the OoT/MM stuff.

Luckily, it still produced some of the best games in the series. :D

I'd really like to see said concept art. After using that google thingy I can't seem to find much zelda related concept art. Only real resource I have is the n64 oot players guide.

also... why the young Link hate? If you're creating a darker tone zelda, young Link, his innocence, and the carefree attitude, ignorance and strong-headed-ness attributed to childhood would only add to the dark tones via contrast.

Link has a personality now?

Selig is German. Selig's Zelda ideas are as fucked up as Fauli's. Selig linked to Fauli's blog several times. OMGCONSPIRACY.

I don't hate it, but if we look at OOT for example, the game really felt better once you grew up. I'm just being shallow I suppose but in my ideal game I want an adult link against enemies that are frightening and difficult even to an adult warrior. The notion of a child going up against this type of enemy seems ridiculous to me. A game such as demons souls really nailed down what I'd prefer in terms of difficult. Even the most mundane of enemy, if not engaged seriously, would wipe the floor with you. In the end, this is Nintendo, and they are only ever moving towards more accessibility, so this will probably never happen.

I just noticed link is in this picture. Does that mean you'll play as link in the new zelda game!?

I love Demon's Souls to death, but there is no way - none - that Nintendo would or should ever use Demon's Souls' difficulty as some metric for Zelda's. Harder, yes, particularly if the game has the Super Guide in it somewhere - which it likely will - but not Demon's Souls level or anywhere near it.

You know what guys? I don't buy the whole girl = mastersword theory. It's pretty farfetched to me. The only thing that holds it together is that Miyamoto hinted that Link had no sword in artwork and that the girl is blue and has a gem in the middle big deal.

She is most definately a fairy, since it's identical to the WW one, but apart from that, just agh.

my god selig:lol

my favorite part:

Now the moment has come and you hit the monster hard with a sword slash diagonal over his disgusting body. The Moblin screams in pain, but gets a hold of himself quickly. But you repeat the whole procedure. The Moblin realizes that he´s no opponent for you and...flees. Confused, you watch the monster flee, something that has never happened in a Zelda-game before.

Looking at some of the galleries Dascu posted, it's actually the MM art I'd single out as the worst.

It's not shit or anything, but comparing this with Terada's art, or even the art for Zelda I's manual.... yeah, no contest. I like Link's WW and TP design much more as well.

edit: sorry, Deity Link is total shit, of course.

Haven't played Wind Waker? The expressions on his face during the course of the game say more than any voice-acted script.

No, they don't. They say more than "realistic" link's three stock expressions

But you are a liar and a thief if you didn't gasp in awe when you called for that statue and WW Link said, QUITE clearly, "C'mon!"

See in my opinion, the reason Zelda is getting stale is that the difficulty is not there. I can concede that in the overworld, enemies can be pretty easy, but if you are going into a dungeon, there's going to be some hardcore baddies in there. If I just found said dungeon, there's a good chance I can't hang for two minutes in here without certain battle skills or items. Make sure you stocked up on fish (that you caught earlier on your own) and proceed at your own peril. As you progress through the game, you learn new moves that can boost your confidence as well as damage dealing/mitigation, but the difficulty needs to stay there. If you really need to fight for your life during most encounters it will be engrossing and engaging throughout the game.
Again, these are only my wishes, and I will still play whatever N gives me. But hey, one can dream.

Meh, haunted, disagree. Well, not completely. I really like both styles, OoT´s and Terada´s artworks, equally. If I could choose for Zelda Wii, I´d choose Terada´s artworks. But I´d also love a cel-shaded Zelda Wii using OoT´s art style. But maybe I´m biased because OoT was one of my first 3D-experiences.

Sure, different strokes etc. I know a lot of people who adore the N64 era art - I just think it sucks. :p

All down to personal preferences.

It's all moot anyway, since we already know that they're going with the TP link design again. Or at least something very similar to it.

I adore the N64 era art, but I think the true Zelda art is that early NES stuff. Who cares though, Zelda art is 100% awesome all the time.

Especially CD-i Zelda art

Huh. Maybe it wasn't OoT/MM I was thinking of. You're right, it's the worst.

But I love Skull Kid, at least..

Argh. What game am I thinking of! The art was all painty, mostly dark colors... It's not original LoZ or LTTP...

Maybe I'm making it up!!

Not at all. Most people asking for "big, bad mature adult" Link aren't asking for Majora's Mask, they're asking for God of War type little boy shit.

At least, in my experiences seeing people discuss this.

Though it not being in that media gallery make me suspect it's fanart. I'm fairly certain it's not.

Either way, it's not as awesome as I remember, so! In fact I quite dislike it. ): Given this new evidence, I definitely prefer TP to OoT/MM. Except Skull Kid. He ranks near the top overall 'cause he's that awesome.

Even some of the people who are asking for dark and mature are misinterpreting dark and mature. :D

What I don't understand is that when WW first came out, most seemed to hate it. But now the general consensus is that it's rightly amazing. Rose ninted glasses or something won't apply to TP; is there some sort of Star Trek law that could be applied to Zelda?

Also that artwork lol.

I do think it's a possibility we may not be playing as Link in the beginning of the new Zelda. We may in fact be playing as a fairy who has to make her way to Link. So the polarity is reversed in this game. In Soviet Hyrule, the sword finds YOU.

Well, I´d actually say what hurt TWW more than its actual art style was the way the first trailer presented the game:

Still makes me angry.

Hey, personally I still dislike the game compared to oot/mm/lttp and I even like TP more then it.

Seeing how I was in the lovers camp from Day 1, I never understood the negativity surrounding it. Seemed to mostly come from US gamers? I dunno.

I'm just happy it's getting its deserved praise, even if it's belated.

Pfft, what else am I going to dream of? Dumplings? >_>

My dream is like Neo's at the start of Matrix Reloaded. He sees most of it, but he can't see what happens to Trinity. This must mean I can't yet understand the Zelda Wii reveal, or something. Or that we can still change it. IT'S UP TO US!

I think there's a difference between challenging and Demon's Souls. Demon's Souls is relentlessly demanding to an almost exhaustive level. That's why we love it, honestly, but that's not something that Nintendo is going to want for Zelda, nor should it be what Zelda is about. I'm perfectly cool with them flipping the switch and making Zelda hard, but the devotion and nigh perfection DS demands is not something they should emulate.

Maybe with something else, but not with Zelda. No Zelda title has been anywhere near DS levels of difficulty. To suddenly throw that into the series would be disastrous.

Dude, I've had dreams about posting on GAF before, no joke. I always wake up and go "what the fuck was that?"

Man, I love Wind Waker's art style, but I also love the direction they took in TP. Just cut back on the brown saturation a bit and TP has some of the best art direction in the industry. I could be happy either way.

Never have I felt such an odd mix of feelings for a game. I am simultaneously super hyped and super fucking apprehensive. I don't particularly have a fondness for motion plus in its current form so I hope they can really show the technology being functional in some way over traditional controllers. If it's just some jerk off to "immersion" at the hit to efficiency and reliability of controls, I'm going to be more than a little annoyed.
