When can we reasonably expect a PS4 price drop?

I think a lot of the 'exclusives' momentum Microsoft have is going to be nullified by the CoD and Battlefront announcements. That actually will make a difference, most exclusives are short lived affairs, big online multiplayer games are for life.

I don't see the point. Microsoft is going to all out give away their console again this year with temp price reduction + free games + gift cards. At least in the US and UK. Sony is confidently winning at all other times worldwide at a $50 price disadvantage.

I don't think MS will be going as hard as they went last year. Too many games coming late this year that will make people want to move over. I think we'll just see a $50 price drop on all SKUs, new SKUs with Holiday games (Tomb Raider and Halo 5), and a sticker on boxes saying "compatible with Xbox 360 games**".

(**150 titles currently supported; more coming soon)

Next year I think.
They will probably do deals in the US to keep up, but I think that when they price drop it will be global.
I just hope it is $100, and before UC4.

I think MS will go $299 + free games at least. This year is their last shot at taking back the US. If they don't outsell Sony by 1 - 1.5M consoles in Nov - Dec it's all for naught like last holiday.

I don't know if people noticed last gen, but all the exclusives in the world never helped the PS3 outsell the 360 during the holidays.

It's still selling well, they have no real reason to do it. Plus if you search around, you can get a decent deal. I got Bloodborne and FC4 with my purchase

If the X1 wins September-November in the NPD by a significant margin, I can see a price cut being announced at PSX in December.

Economies of scale.
Both Sony and Microsoft have some deal with AMD for the production of their respective APUs, and it's fairly standard business practice to reduce the cost as time goes and tens million of units are produced. And the same goes for every supply partner they work with.
So, they actually may have sold the PS4 at cost during launch, but they're certainly making some good money from each sold console today.

Appreciate the reply, that makes sense and clarified some things for me. My knee jerk reaction was holy crap, that's a low price. Technically the PS4 will have been out a lot longer than one year at the date people were suggesting a price drop. But yeah. Thanks for the explanation!

This holiday.

I disagree. Why delay it to Spring? If you are going to do it, you do it before Christmas.

Sure, they don't "need" it, but what's $50 bucks in the long term if they persuade a few more people to go PS instead of Xbox due to the price? Because MS is bringing the heat this holiday (in the US at least), I would say getting consumers buying games on PS for years to come is a more important business decision than being $50 more expensive.
I doubt they are THAT concerned about Xbox...

They have COD DLC now, battlefront, and Assassins Creed this year...
A couple good bundles, and they will be just fine.

I would agree with other posters that a price drop is highly likely at the Paris Games Week show (Oct. 28th - Nov. 1st).

What remains to be seen is how aggressive Sony wants to be for the holidays. A $50 drop says they want to milk short term profit margins. A $100 drop says Sony is going for short term market share with the intent of maximizing long term profit (more installed consoles leads to more games sold in the long run).

Don't expect Sony to support the PS3 or Vita in any real meaningful way from now on. I would like a PS3 price drop. To at least $99. I'd at least buy another one.
Yeah, I wanted to get another one as well, not one at almost $300.00 though. I have two dead PS3's on my table, don't think I should spend so much to play a few games on my backlog there.

They never actually even announced the 1TB PS4 did they? I imagine that is still coming and if so there isn't going to be a price drop. You'll instead get the 1TB for $400 and they'll probably just phase out the 500GB with bundles and such.

Then by the holidays you'll hopefully get a 1TB bundle with a game or 2, still for $400.

I don't know if people noticed last gen, but all the exclusives in the world never helped the PS3 outsell the 360 during the holidays.

The 360 had a one year head start that helped its gaming library and "console my friends have"-statements and a price that was $200 cheaper.

PS4 vs. Xbox One is pretty different. Xbox One is cheaper, and none of the consoles are similar to the Xbox 360's (or PS3's) position in North America vs. their competition during this point of the gen. Games like Halo 5 are definitely going to help this Holiday season. Uncharted 4 would have too for the PS4 if it didn't get delayed.

$299 in September with the launch of MGSV. Sept 1 is also the start of a new quarter and a chance for them to start making up the current yoy deficits in shipments. Think they will then push out 1tb bundles at $399.

At the start. But even 4-5 years into the generation when they were the same price exclusives still never really mattered that much more than being associated with Call of Duty or the next shooter.

Sony have a stacked 2016 with many of their studios releasing big games - Naughty Dog and Guerrilla. I have to imagine Sony are going to sell a significant amount of PS4's around Uncharted 4 and Horizon. I would think Microsoft are going to try and sway as many buyers as possible this holiday season, so we may see more insane giveaways.

It's tracking behind the Wii right now, but ahead of the PS2. If it doesn't hit $299 by next April/May, the PS2 will blow past the PS4 (launch aligned (which favors the PS4 because it launched in November instead of March)).

XB1 will almost certainly hit $299 MSRP'ish for black friday, and probably $249 in some of the more extreme deals. More likely than not the XB1 will take November and December, barring any major moves by Sony.

Sony can probably skate along for the rest of 2015, but they will want to sell the maximum amount of consoles in advance of Uncharted 4, Horizon and the Last Guardian.

My guess is that you will see a Call of Duty/Battlefornt bundles for $399 in November and black friday prices of $349 for the bundles. Around the end of February or early March we'll see the big drop - $299.

Probably early next year. They are selling well without much hassle and with huge margin.
They can throw few bundles for the holiday to keep up with XB1.

The Xbox 360 had an 8 Million+ lead over the PS3 in North America by that time. It was the logical console to get for many people here just due to many other people having it. I can't see any console having a lead that big here in North America this gen.

Let's rather ask the question: Why would Sony lower the price of the PS4?

Possible options would be:
A) Sales are slow
B) The comptition is lowering their prices and Sony sees that as a threat
C) They want to boost hardware sales to sell more software

Certainly only C seems plausible at the current time. But only if the projected earnings with increased software surpass the losses induced by lower margins on hardware. This is something their analysts are working on every day.

god a drop to 299 this holiday season would be great. i can buy it for my nephews and then buy it for myself once sf5 comes out.

u.s sales haven't exactly been great lately. it even lost the other month to the xb1.

They will want to sell as much hardware as possible for an extremely deep roster of 2016 first party titles. Not enough pressure in 2015 to drop the price because of the lean list of first part releases.

It shouldn't have one this year if Sony can't get it to $299.

Holiday 2016 at the latest seems like the safest bet.

Not even the PS2 waited that long for a price drop. I'm sure we'll see at least a $50 price cut this holiday. PGW seems like a safe bet as their conference is on the same day as the Halo 5 launch.

September at the earliest. Paris Games Week at the lastest.

- $100 pricecut for the regular SKU
- $349 for a 500GB PS4 + 1 game
- $399 for a 1TB PS4 + 1 game

All I know is verendus said something to the effect that sony is making a move that will beneficial to the launch of MGSV and the context of the convo implied price cut to me. Makes sense to do it with Mgs because it is the only brand the appeals globally to do a ww pricecut with. Think it's perfect timing. Will maximize sales in the busiest time of the year.

Waiting till Paris game show won't slow halo momentum. You want people one the fence to make their decision before halo 5 launches.

I'm thinking PS4 will need to be $299 by the time morpheus releases (spring 2016?),
maybe they want to bank some ps4 profits before they start bundling and attempting to make their new VR headset relatively affordable.

All I know is the PS4 would need to be $100 cheaper to achieve that goal.

Define dominating? WW sure, but in the end NA is the biggest and most influential market, they already got outsold in April or whatever, no games, people just decided to buy more Xbox. They will get easily outsold this holiday in NA at the current price.

If anything, it's Europe that's the most influential market now.

I was planning on getting one at the beginning of August but if some people are expecting a price drop this year I might wait...I wasn't really expecting one since I figured they were still way ahead of the competition, and on the off chance they did I thought it would be announced at E3.

Is there actually good reason to believe they'd have a drop in September/October? I don't really think I'd want to wait past that, this E3 has really given me an itch for next gen. I just need to get one before Fallout 4.

It lost 1 month by like 13K and then won the following month by 13K.

People are making way too big a deal over Xbox One beating the PS4 in April here.
the xb1 isn't exactly selling very well at all and now the ps4 is barely beating it by 13k. that isn't exactly something to be proud of.

But Microsoft is all about holiday sales and at the end of last year the two weren't even close. That was all with good deals, this year they have a lot of exclusives too.

PS4 has a lead of what? 500-700k?

Microsoft could quite easily be the leading platform in the US by the new year if there's no price drop. Even with a price drop I still think that will happen.

They're catching up quite a bit in the UK too so I wouldn't rule that out either.

Don't forget Fallout 4. That, as well as CoD: Black Ops III & Star Wars: Battlefront are definitely going to get a lot more attention than Tomb Raider & even Halo 5.

300$ or € 2 years after the release and when you're clearly ahead your opponent ? they have strong marketing deals for the winter (Battlefront is really really huge), it would be a strange move.
