Why Did The PS3 Fail?

FabCam said:
I'm sorry but I can't hold back. I don't know why the PS3 gets so much stick whilst the Wii seems to be greater than thou right now. The PS3 has far more decent game than the Wii. It has a decent online service. It's an HD media centre. What does the Wii have? The weather channel, that's what. People should also stop complaining about price. $500 is nothing. Over here where I live I paid £425, that's $850, and I still think it was worth the money. Any person on a half decent salary can save up for a PS3 within a few weeks.

Chad? Is that you? Did you finally register on GAF?

You're going to have to back that up.

As others have said, PS3 is a failure in the sense that Sony (and a lot of other people) expected it to be a larger-than-PS2-sized success, coming out with a bang and exploding with huge sales numbers. At least, before they announced the price point, that was the expectation from most people.

The PS3 failed to push HD entertainment into the mainstread right out of the gates, it failed to do anything major to online console gaming, it failed to begin any sort of "real" next-gen, which had already begun a year before its launch, and it certainly failed to showcase any sort of mass-appeal; we all know which console took that away from it.

Looking at the situation today however, the PS3 certainly isn't a failure. ~4,500,000 console sales with a generally mediocre stock of games, aside from the few and far between gems? And priced at $599 for the majority if its lifespan? Most, if not all, of the goals Sony set for the platform failed to be met at launch as they had hoped, but that does not mean the PS3 cannot ever accomplish what it was created for.

The platform has a long way to go and Sony has a lot to prove before it can be generally called a success, especially in the face of the Wii pulverizing everything else in sales, including the PS2 and 360. But to say that it's not on the path to recovery from its controversially faulty launch is asinine, and you'd have to be absolutely delusional to think that the PS3's worst days are ahead of it and not behind.

So you not going to answer my question? instead you going to ask a useless one?

I've answered it a hundred times in this thread already. Yes, it's a failure. It's not doomed, it's not going to dissappear from shelves, but from a business standpoint, it is a failure.

The rumored 40GB unit might have some impact, but the current lineup is poor, the future lineup looks poor, and average people aren't interested in BluRay yet.

Are we all on the same page now?

Well, I stand alone: The PS3 is a failure, now, currently 3:56 pm EST on Monday, Sept 10, 2007, planet Earth. And will fail more. It hasn't even lost it's exclusives. It'll only gonna get worse. Sorry. I just see the reaction to losing Ace Combat as an exclusive as not even comparing to what will happen when a bigger name drops.

The lose on every front. Final Fantasy and MGS won't be able to hold it up. Everything else won't generate the momentum to keep it second. If anything, there'll be a split w/Nintendo capitalizing on the casuals and still attracting the hardcore gamers. If the hardcore doesn't pick up a lot, they still won't be able to get rid of it. Mario. Starfox. Zelda. Fzero. Their complete lineup and price advantage would only make the biggest fanboy to ignore them. They'll hit $150 first and they have every advantage that made the PS1 a beast. Price. Hence, they will always be an attractive option to publishers. Sometime before the end of 2008, a 3rd party will have a break out hit that screams past 5 million. And they probably will have 25 million systems in people's hands before the end of the summer of 2008.

It's over. Sorry Sony.

And it's going to be really funny since three of the most hyped PS3 titles have been shot down so far: one being ok, one being flunktastic, one being too expensive for its own good. :lol

I'm sure most people can perfectly afford $19 gallons of milk. $19 is nothing, any person on a half decent salary can buy a $19 gallon of milk, especially if it's ultra-mega-pasteurized milk. But I don't think most people would buy a $19 gallon of milk despite being able to afford it--- because $19 is a fucking ridiculous price for milk.

I can literally buy a thousand PS3s right this moment if I wanted to. If I was feeling really generous I probably could've singlehandedly nudged the PS3 over the 100,000 mark in June's NPD. But I don't want to, mostly because, well, I have no use for a PS3--- but I also realize it's a ridiculous price for a game console.

Your exactly right. The only thing the Wii has is the weather channel!

Okay, sorry to derail this very serious topic, but I'm slightly confused about something. A couple of people have mentioned Loudninja and PS3forums. Is there a history or something I don't know about?

part of the problem is sony's poor marketing of PS3 in mainstream media...or lack thereof......

anyone even so much as seen a warhawk commercial on US TV???? how bout lair, which came out a week ago???? I have seen a few Heavenly sword tv spots on late night tv, but there needs to be more massive ad campaign.....somethin like ads during the VMA awards or somethin....

cmon sony..get with the program
I'm happy they aren't advertising Lair, and you should be too. Advertising something that's not worth it, just leads to burning your customers eventually.

HS has been getting ads during wrestling and football, there's web and print ads for it everywhere, theatrical ads also. I think that's the only Sony game lately that's got some good marketing. Keep in mind, that game won't sell as much as something like Halo or Gran Turismo no matter what, so it doesn't make sense to advertise it on some really crazy level.

I agree, they should have advertised Warhawk as some uber-multiplayer experience, but oh well. I'm personally (and selfishly) much happier that they're spending that advertising money on HS.

I would say that their respective line-ups have been...comparable so far. A load of crap punctuated by a decent game or two.The 360 also gets a bit of an unfair advantage in terms of software quality assessments. It's a year ahead of the other two and it's a no-brainer that second-year software is going to be better than first-year software, but nobody ever seems to bring this up.

THINK OF THE 360 SOFTWARE LINEUP FROM A YEAR AGO

WE DON'T USE COMMON SENSE IN THE GAMING WORLD.

If we did, then this thread wouldn't exist. They would also stop comparing the Orange (XBOX 360) and apples (PS3 and Wii) lineups because one is already nearing its second year while the other two are nearing the first year.

Because it doesn't matter. Sony doesn't get a pass because the software is one year behind. Shoppers are looking at the software on the shelf today. That's all that matters.

EDIT: BB said it better. Damn.

Yeah, OK. It doesn't matter to mom and dad in the store, but with the amount of hyperbole that gets tossed about on neoGAF, it better damn well matter in discussions here.

edit: When I say "nobody brings it up," I'm referring to the conversations that take place on sites like this and in and around the industry.

That's one game. That doesn't cut the mustard with me. As a prospective new console customer, I'm buying a PS3 for Uncharted? Let's get real.

Heavenly Sword, Warhawk and Uncharted are not system sellers folks.

Tobor said:

I disagree with your other points about lineup as, hey, personal opinion and all that; but this point is absolutely spot on.

Some people are never gonna get it though dude. You say 'failure' and they're all like you shot their dog or something.

The PS3's future lineup is far from poor. While Microsoft's lineup has a brief amount of post-Halo time to stabilize and Nintendo blows its 3 major hardcore titles at the end of its first year as always, the PS3 has some of its most highly-anticipated titles cooking.

2008 is going to be an extremely solid year for all three platforms, but personally, with games like MGS4, LBP, KZ2, GT5, FFXIII in addition to the titles that have yet to be announced, Sony's got plenty to be happy for.

But if we do that, then we'd have to be rational and actually think, instead of screaming from our guts out.
And then we won't have the hilarity currently going on here.

Decisions, decisions...

I agree that 2008's PS3 lineup appears solid but I'm not convinced FFXIII will make it out of Japan by the end of next year.

Why do we discuss anything at all then? Why does neoGAF even exist?! It should just be an RSS feed for news bites! It may be a hypothetical circle jerk that has little or no bearing on the market-at-large, but if we're going to discuss it anyway, let's at least try and be as honest with ourselves as possible.

to you they arent, to others they are.

large majority of early 360 adopters bought it because halo 3 is coming for it, same thing on ps3 for FFXII and MGS4.

Wars not over, and flaming and buring the ps3 to crap is pointless, the xbox and gc all got their own gems last generation, besides being AMAZINGLY outsold by ps2.

To say Ps3 will have no good games ever, is laughable.

Uncharted is a system seller, on top of all the other games coming out in that timeframe, but no lets just IGNORE them.

To say the 360 has a lineup and then ignore the ps3s is stupid. IMO the only worth it game for me on my 360 has been gears, everything else has not done much for me.

Are you simply ignoring every game coming out between now and Fall 2008?

I can ignore the majority of PS3 games coming out in the next year and tell you that Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo 5 are enough to headline the PS3's seasonal lineups up until Fall 2008.
