Why does everyone HATE Smash Ultimate now?!

Not clicking on a random video, give us a summary or something.

Anyway, I don't hate it but I think they missed the mark with the roster big time. Felt more like marketing than a celebration of Nintendo's legacy.

I didn't know people were hating it.

My brothers and I used to play the hell out of SSB and Melee. But they lost interest once Brawl came out. The problem is the cast just got way too bloated, and there were shit loads of items, we didn't know what half of them did.

Sm4sh was always the better game

Yeah, it had too many 3rd party characters and lots that had nothing to do with Nintendo or was a small part of Nintendo history.

Same, I try with each new release but it doesn't capture me like Melee did.

Melee is still the best playing game in the series, but Ultimate is a close second and the content is unmatched (except missing a true Adventure mode).

Most of the people I know love it.
I don't really think you can make a fighting game with 80+ characters and have it be perfectly balanced, and this idea devs need to keep updating the game forever and can't just say "after multiple years the game is now content complete and we are moving on" is silly.

Once you step outside online forums I think the vast majority of people just see it as a fun party game to play with friends.
Yes the online sucks and having it work better is something Nintendo should definitively focus on in the next entry (or an eventual Switch 2 port). But it's not like any of the previous ones had amazing online multiplayer.

I don't hate it. Played it yesterday in fact. It's easily the best Smash game Nintendo have made. I've got 2000+ hours on the damn thing and by and large I think it's the best in almost every category. I even think it's shockingly well balanced for a game with an eye-watering 89 characters. Sure, there are some characters who are really un-fun to fight, but there's no matchup I dread, no tech which I feel is unfairly broken. I would say the upper-mid tier of Ultimate has many insufferably toxic desperados who routinely rely on wifi, lag-switches and cheap setups to exploit said lag, and they're best just blocked. Once you get to Elite Smash games are mostly ethernet-based, stable, and a great deal more enjoyable and sportsmanlike.

The video does bring up a good point though, and that's that a lot of players have the mindset of simply not engaging, even with characters who don't support a ranged style of play. And it's not just a Smash problem, it's seen a lot more in other fighting games now. While it's not uncommon to see neutral stalemate in high level play, it's due to players being wary of a million bad situations they might step into, based on lots of experience and knowledge. And so you get beginners and low level players simply taking the safest option and refusing to commit, because they assume it's the optimum way to play. I think we're due for some sort of anti-camping mechanic to discourage it. Tekken 8 tried to address it by allowing everyone in the game to hit like a fucking truck, but it's kind of had the opposite effect because engaging is potentially so risky. It's an interesting problem to solve.

This sums up me. I would also add with Nintendo shitty online, and kind of the death of local co-op, at least compared to the early 2000s, makes it a little less appealing.

Smash Ultimate is amazing. However competitively from my understanding it was left is a really annoying balance spot where some of the dlc characters where left obnoxious and didnt get a much needed balance patch. Im really hoping for a smash deluxe version on switch 2 that adds more balance updates and characters.

Season 6 What GIF by The Office

Had no idea. By far the best Smash game imo, absolutely incredible roster, stage selection, music etc. Doubt we'll ever see anything like it again.

Having a more focused single player mode like Subspace Emissary and more stable online would make it perfect.

My wife and daughter got me Smash Ultimate for Christmas this year. I had never played a Smash game before. It's pretty fun. I can definitely see the appeal. I don't know if it will be something I play like I do Mario Kart, but I'll definitely sink time into it and explore all it has to offer.

Rollback netcode for an upgraded version would be so dope. Id kill for a ranked system too but sakurai would never do it.

Yeah, I'd be playing it so much more than I do today if the online was better. I basically only pull it out for local multiplayer.

Similar experience here. My Nephew got it for Christmas and I played it with him last week.

Really fun game with a ton of stages and characters that you can unlock. I loved it. I know they have DLC characters, but I like that you can unlock characters on the base game as well.

Death of local co-op is a big one. When I was a kid my entire extended family would go on a yearly two week vacation to Cape Cod, and we'd rent a huge beach house. I had two brothers and 6 cousins and we played the absolute shit out of the original Super Smash Bros. It was insanely good times.

Online multiplayer doesn't capture that feeling for me. Super Smash Bros used to be this awesome game you play with your buddies and family. Now it's a game where you log in online and get completely destroyed by a bunch of fucking nerds who play the game like it's their profession. You pop into the game excited to throw some pokeballs, and do a Falcon Punch, and then you quickly realize you don't actually know how to play the game after getting defeated in such a swift and surgical manner.

I'm sure some people hate it, but I don't like those people. The game allows to play Sephiroth, so it automatically good.

That's a huge one. A perfect Saturday night with the boys for me back in 1998 was Goldeneye, WCW Revenge( wasn't a Smash player back then, but the sentiment would obviously apply to that game or something like MK64 as well), alcohol and pizza.

All Smash games are good in their own way.

64 hardly got to be made, yet unlocked pure fun with its tiny roster and bad graphics.

Melee is just a legendary game of games. A Halo CE level comp title. The graphics, roster, maps, modes and especially amount of content of this game was insane. Even though it really didn't need all that to be a success like the 64 version, just those perfect controls.

Brawl pretty much sucks, but even that's the only place to get Subspace Emissary for a Nintendo multi-verse single player story, and the epic title theme. I one-and-doned the story and almost never played it mp unless it was with Project M mods, which worked pretty well but became unnecessary with sequels. At the time, it hurt me that the only Smash game with Sonic and Snake, was bad.

Smash for Wii U I actually REALLY liked, first HD game, felt like a cleaned up Melee, only with characters I wanted like Sonic, in a non-Brawl title. I still really like this one, recognizing it's outdated because Ultimate is a very similar game with one million more characters. That said -Ultimate didn't come first and is basically Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Smash, but with a graphics update that makes everything a little darker and less fun (so a little more Brawl like and less Melee like). 4 also has regular ass Link, one of my favorite Smash characters since 64, but Ult stuffed every version of Link except just normal Link lol...we're at the point you represent "normal link" with a costume, yet the game has like 400 characters. Uhh...

I guess what I'm saying is I REALLY like Melee and 4, but Ult kinda feels like the same game with a commercial feeling update, but that's where all the new characters are so hey.

They do? Sales say otherwise.

Classic example of an extremely loud vocal minority thinking they're more than they actually are.

EDIT: I'm not saying the grievances are necessarily unjustified. But, it's kind of obvious that the majority of the market isn't upset with them, hence the extremely strong sales.

To satiate the core fanbase though, it'd probably be best for Nintendo to look into the complaints, see which ones are most prominent, and see if they can address them in the next game in a way that's congruent with what they want the next game to be.

Really don't see that the problem with smash. Every single one of there characters was on there
It's supposed to be a celebration of Nintendo. Putting characters that have nothing to do with Nintendo heritage is why people have a problem with the roster.

34m copies sold but sadly that doesn't reflect the online player base today, which I think is what the video is talking about. Things are definitely winding down for Ultimate. This time last year I'd get a game in 20 seconds tops during peak hours, but now it can be a minute or more.

I don't know if Nintendo is going to do a brand new Smash 6 or overhaul Ultimate for Switch 2, but Ultimate is shedding players fast.

Probably because Palutena is top tier and the game gives you very limited approach options and the strategy seems to be play it safe and play a more defensive game instead of being aggressive. Pretty much need to be frame perfect and condition opponents for a bait and punish playstyle. As a result you either don't engage often or play so safe it is boring to play and also boring to watch.

I honestly prefer Smash 4 over both Ultimate and Melee. Seemed like a more balanced package.

I don't think I would call it hate. More like players are burnt out on Smash Ultimate and want something new.

I have long wondered if the route of the next Smash is a Smash Melee or Smash Wii remake w/ esports patch and smaller roster and additional characters.

Allowing Sakurai to train people under him to eventually takeover.

Who?

Ultimate is the best Smash game ever made. Coming from someone who grew up with series. It's really only lacking a true story/adventure mode and a number of improvements to the online matchmaking. Some balancing is needed, but pound for pound this was an outstanding release with an amazing roster.

The combat mechanics found a pleasant blend between the fast paced Melee style and hit heavy focus of Smash 64. Incorporating positive elements of Brawl and Wii U, it really just felt like the Best of Smash all combined into one Ultimate package.

I don't hate it but I'm upset they never came out with like an ultimate edition with all characters included in one purchase.

My most played game of any generation besides Melee and probably edging out Brawl.

Only thing I'm bitter about is that there are some black squares where characters and levels should be… instead nothing.

Otherwise it's a top level game.

Legitimately asking, do the sales really tell the whole story though? I say this as someone who has bought ever single smash bros, this one is by far my least played (even though it isn't necessarily my least favorite). Like does the game have a legitimate following and get run time by a majority of those people. It may, but it fell off for me compared to previous entries.

Why does everyone HATE potatoes now?

They don't. Whoever this YouTuber is can get fucked. Make decent content and you won't have to resort to using bullshit absolutes like this.

So, Astrobot before Astrobot? Waiting for his video about why everyone hates Astrobot in 7 years.

What in Astrobot wasn't an integral piece of Sony's past? Haven't played the new one yet but in the packaged version it only had franchises heavily associated with PS.

Now PS AllStars was the same with characters like the Dead Space guy and big daddy and people complained for the same exact reasons.

I'm gonna guess this is one of these takes where a person asks "which one is better: a donut or a pancake". People say "donut" and said person asks "why does everyone hates pancakes now?"

Ultimate is easily my favorite game on switch, and it's really the only reason I turn that system on anymore. Pretty crazy people hate on it.
