Bahahaha welcome to 2012 where luddites who've never owned a tablet or laptop can drink tea, pet their cats, eat popcorn and watch Netflix in 480p for around 3 hours while in streaming distance of their WiiU. BEST CONSOLE EVAR

Lol careful junior, tablets don't even have Mario.

Was this really necessary. Some people enjoy the convenience of something smaller than a laptop and not everyone owns a tablet (I don't for example).

No offense, but what was the point of this comment? It would be crazy thinking to believe that everyone out there has the need or wants a tablet or smart phone. Hell, I know plenty of people here in Japan who do not have a smartphone. For them, this would be a totally new experience. There was really no reason to be condescending.

Might want to watch your tongue. A ban for you is a perm.

Oh, it's a Wii U thread. No worries. Carry on.

It's the middle of the night and needs replies. He came here as a last resort and it worked.

To those looking at Target store availability online, take it with a grain of salt. I looked online at a few local stores in Seattle, and the website said they had both versions of the console in stock. I got excited, hopped in my car and drove over to pick one up.

When I got to the store, the two guys at the electronics counter said they were all sold out. I mentioned that the website said they had them, and they said, "Yeah, we know. We still have people's pre-ordered systems, and the online store can't tell the difference. Since they are in the computer, the website thinks we have them in stock. A lot of people have come in and gotten angry about it."

I smiled at them and said, "No worries, it's not your fault." I turned around and walked out empty handed. Guess I'll have to wait a bit to get my ZombiU fix. :(

Ahhh yea, I forgot how finicky those store checkers can be. Save myself the gas and call a few nearby first to see.

Hit the home buttom and you can turn the screen off that menu set. Not sure how it works while using netflix, but see if that helps.

Yeah, it does not work with netflix. once you hit the home button it pauses the movie and when you try to return it goes back to the menu. Will fiddle with it some more, but there should be a way to do it...at least I hope.

Did some more testing, this does not work. Once you hit the home button it takes you to the menu screen and that also pauses/makes the big screen show the menu. The option to turn off the screen is there, but if you hit it the gamepad turns off, but the menu is on the big screen giving you ability to go back to netflix. Any press of any button on the gamepad and it turns the screen back on. So I guess this does not work.

I did find the brightness setting though, so that is a good find because I did not like how it dimmed the screeen when removed from a power source, now the pad is bright all the time as I like it.

Also found some controller shortcuts. D-Pad up and down swaps the Movie/TV Show playing on the big screen to the pad and vice versa just hitting up/down on the d-pad.

Wii U is definitely next gen... Start up patching, Netflix patchin, SMB:U patching. Slow ass download speed like the PS3 too :(
My download speeds have been great. That 1gb patch went quick. I also don't have issues with my ps3 speeds either. I think some of you need better routers.

Hmmm, that is a bit weird. Seems like an obvious feature to put in. I know someone was testing it and at some point said, "the light from that screen is a bit distracting...". I'll mess with it a bit later on if you don't figure it out to see if I can come up with something other than putting it on the charger and turning it around lol

Good stuff.

Im really digging the communities for game aspect of miiverse. Fun looking at and leaving messages etc. Some crazy talented sketchers out there too.

Wonder what people get out of making drive by comments like that. I mean, it's not going to make the people who like their console like it any less...

I can't figure this out - how do you get real games and people to show up in Mii WaraWara? I've gone into the Miiverse settiings and set it to show all games and stuff, but I still only get the default apps in there and the default Nintendo chat popups.

And is it possible to change your shirt color? On Wii that was favorite color, but I don't see a setting for that here.

Good stuff.

Thanks for helping out. It is a needed feature. I am a big audio/video buff and have a nice home theatre set up, having that little screen illuminated when I have my lights down is a little distracting. Hope there is a way to do this. Right now, the only thing I can think of is if you have a WiiMote or a Pro Controller also attached this way you can navigate the TV Screen while the pad is off, but then that is another controller/input device you have to have out.

Also discovered that the dimming when on the charger still exists, regardless if I set the brightness to the Max 5 level. I did that and put it on the charger and it was noticeably brighter when on the charger.

As for real people I think it just takes time. just before i stopped for the night a bit ago I had like 6 gaffers Mii running on the wara wara. Game icons I am curious about too

What the...apparently I got this message 7 hrs ago?

All I have is "Teknoman from NeoGAF".

So looks like my only solution to the WiiU audio issue is to buy one of these:

http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AC1635

productLarge_15604.jpg

productLarge2_15604.jpg

Costs $99, though that's the only way I'll be able to get audio to my speakers, or else I'm stuck playing with headphones all the time (not ideal for multiplayer). Darn it Ninty!

edit: might just opt for the cheap option instead

Hey, so can we take in game screenshots yet...? How?

It should work when you press the home button while ingame. Patrick made 2 screenshots on the Giant Bomb live stream without knowing, but they came from pressing the home button if I saw that correctly.

When you said you found the option to bypass that, I though I had just missed it. I got the same results you did. Turn it on Max brightness, power save off, put it on charger...screen still gets bright. Like, a whole setting brighter. Hopefully it's worked out soon.

Maybe NeoGAF is banned :) Or more seriously, they may not like that you're using an anime name - they may view that as something that could upset the trademark owners.

People, please friend me. My username is "Gahiggidy".

Yeah, it looks like there is a 6th brightness level when it is on the charger. I did exactly as you, set it to 5, power saving mode off and it gets a notch brighter, like the difference between 4 and 5. You would think if you have it on 5 that is the highest brightness the screen will go regardless if you have power plugged in or not.

I am also noticing another oddity with netflix. Even in power mode saving mode, the screen never dims, it stays at the the same brightness level. The reason it does not dim it seems is because when watching on the big screen, the small screen is shopwing the progress bar on where the movie is, plus it has a timer in the lower corner of the screen.

When I had the pad on the charger and it was doing it's 45min download, the screen would dim, even on the charger and the progress bar slowly moving, so not sure why it does not dim when using netflix. I don't have time to hook up my pro controller or the wii mote to test if I can turn the screen off and still use netflix (I assume I can). That seems like the only way to do it, otherwise the pad will always be on.

My friend (Theorymon) had a terrible experience with the Wii U OS up until the point where he finally managed to register a Nintendo Network ID and it worked quite smoothly since.

Could it be possible that some of the lag is caused by the console continuously trying to connect to the registry servers?

The 3DS works the same way. When it has a direct charge via outlet the screen brightens even more.

Traded in a few games today to work towards my Wii U pre-order. Pretty damn settled on both NSMBU and ZombiU for when the launch actually comes around here. One one hand I'm lamenting the lack of any other interesting titles at launch, but on the other I'm kinda glad I'm not stressing myself wanting to buy a whole bunch of shit. Definitely spreading my budget at this time of year.

Not sure. I know that some apps take forever to load in, like the settings menu. I also know that it is really dependent on your internet connection on downloading the updates. Still some issues to work out and hopefully they can get stuff to load a bit faster.

Does anyone know how to make the WiiPad not dim a little when you remove it from the charging cradle or cord? I cannot find a setting that allows you to do this...unless I am completely missing something. I know at full brightness it will use up more battery power, but if I want it to be as brigt as possible, then I should be able to do so.

Oh and for me it took about 45min or so to get the update downloaded. I do have a killer internet connection, which I do pay out of the ass for, but it is pretty sad that they have to have such a massive day one update.

It's like some handhelds. They have an extra brightness setting when plugged in. There's no way to change that behavior.

Thanks, a few others posted that the 3ds is the same way, so it seems like it is what it is, which is ok, just wanted to make sure that there was not a setting or anything that I was missing.

Browsing through different Miiverse communities even though I don't have those games is fun. Also there's a ton of great sketches out there. Miiverse might be my favorite feature of the WiiU so far.
Netflix works great, very smooth menus.
Browser works great.
I was able to create a NNID without any issues and no hard locks on the system (yet).

Yeah, I'm loving the WiiU so far. The only negative thing is the range of my Gamepad is messed up. It has a good range if you move north or south from where the WiiU console is but if you move east or west the signal dies just a few feet away (no walls or anything major on the way).

Your TV is overscanning your source. There should be an option on your TV under resolution to "Direct Source" or something similar. Your TV is forcing the resolution as 1080p, cutting off the edges. Happens with almost all TVs and you just need to calibrate it correctly.

Wy do TVs do that? I can understand if they're receiving an OTA broadcast, but a 1080p signal over HDMI should literally be 1920x1080, and on a 1920x1080 panel you'd assume it'd be 1:1 by default, no scaling.

Default to that, and for the 0.01% of people that have an odd source causing overscan, let THEM adjust it.

Good stuff.

I took a gander at the manual and on page 23 there is a section that is titled "Turning only the Wii U Gamepad Off". In the instructions it sites exactly what you suggested earlier, but when you hit the home button in the Netflix app, it takes you to the same menu screen on both the gamepad and the big screen. So it is more of how the app responds to the home button.

So are some people having trouble getting sound with their HDMI cable? I have mine hooked up to my PC monitor and Avermedia HD live gamer and it doesn't detect to monitor display for some reason O.o I can see the game play the game and record it but there is no audio with it and no monitor detection

i need to buy a tv and see whats up

Since I was mentioned, I should probably clarify my experience. Before, I swear my settings menu took over a minute to load, but now, its like 8-10 seconds. I'd certainly like it to be faster, but I feel like my Wii U is actually usable now, at least compared to when I didn't have an account! Speaking of that, jesus that took forever to get, I seriously wasn't able to get an account till 12 hours after I got the system!

This last one really irritates me. Nintendo is constantly living in the past, do they assume everyone is still piping sound directly through their TV?

Anyone get Wii U videochat working yet? All I get is connection errors.

Would be trivial to have covered as well, it's just a few more entries in their IR database.

Don't forget:

-No option to change the screen size of the whole system, just for a few apps.

I can't

To be fair, this is an issue with PS3 too. Don't know why they don't just have a setting in the XMB that games can then pull from.

Can people elaborate about the gamepad screen? How is the compression of non-native software like Mario and Blops? Any artifacts?

The Gamepad is amazing.

So much premature hate on this board, it's probably not surprising but always amusing.

I can't wait til the system is tweaked and more original games come out.

I don't even have an HD TV currently but I'm having a great time with New Super Mario Brothers U on the Gamepad and not even looking at it on my oldish TV.

I see tons of potential with this system.

There's a lot of work and effort to be done though.

A positive post on wii u on gaf, damn. I cant wait for the 30th, hopefully the server issues are sorted by then which i think where alot of the frustration right now comes from.

Our TV controls the receiver through Anynet. So indirectly, the Wii U controls the receiver.

You dont have something like that do you?
hmm, HDMI-CEC might be an option. I've never bothered but might try it. Only niggle for me is I sometimes use the TV only, and sometimes receiver.

Oddly enough, some games seem to look better on the screen while others look worse. AC3 looks noticeably better to me, NSMBU and BLOPS2 looks a tad muddier, but only ever so slightly. The screen is overall pretty alright. The light bleeding is a bit much but other than that, I'm impressed with the image quality

The Gamepad is fucking awesome, and "just works". The problem is Nintendo can't get their shit together with anything else.

The revelation that the TV controls doesnt work with receivers has me disappointed. No biggie

How are y'all setting up ur system. On the stand or just horizontal. Don't know why, just interested
