Wii U Release Day Thread

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
How long are these dummies going to leave games like Madden, ME, Darksiders etc at full price? I'd buy a couple of these games if they were the same price as the 360/PS3. I get that publishers feel like milking early adopters is their god-given right, but this is one of several reasons their ports won't sell on the Wii U, and then they'll use that as a reason to stop porting. I'll live vicariously through those of you that did shell out full price (suckers) in the meantime - how's Mass Effect on the gamepad?
There is much less price pressure for Wii U games since the library is brand new and their are no old, budget titles to compete with.

Darksiders 2 could be argued to be worth that price since it includes DLC. So could Batman. CoD Blop 2 is ok. The others, including AC3 should have price parity.

Darksiders is my favorite launch game right now. Price would not matter: So worth it.

It truly does suck, but from a business perspective it makes perfect sense. Personally, I am holding off and buying them when their prices drop, which I would be just after Christmas I assume. :)

I'm sure it will be. I've used HORI in the past. Still, it would be nice for you to confirm after you apply.

Anyone picked up a case or sleeve? I'm going crazy over the fingerprints and smudges on my GamePad :(

I applied my Hori screen protector to my gamepad today and it was very easy to do. And it doesn't seem like it did anything to the image quality. Also it's got that feel when you touch it with the stylus like "yeah, you're not gonna get scratches on this thing unless you take a knife to it or something". lol

Anyone else having issues with their Wii U reading discs when switching a game?

So far it only seems to happen for me with NSMBU. I play it, eject the disc and the system freezes. I tried exiting back out to the Wii U menu to switch, eject disc, insert new game, and it while it doesn't freeze it won't read the new game. If I power down and back on then it reads the game.

Not really sure what to make of this problem at this time.

Anyone regret going the basic bundle?
Nope. I didn't want glossy black consoles and i had an external hdd anyway. Not really interested in Nintendoland, and I dont think im going to spend enough money to justify the deluxe promotion. Im frugal like that. The stands would've been cool though =/

.

That and I like the look of the white better too, not just because it hides fingerprints

The activity log on the Wii U is sorta weird.

It says my total playtime for AC3 is about 28 hours - but when I check AC3 itself it says the total playtime is around 17.

Maybe when you have a game running and you hit the home button to go into stuff like Miiverse, it still counts that as the overall playtime?

I was at Future Shop today purchasing a gaming HD PVR2 to record Wii-U footage

Overheard two guys at the Wii-U demo station, one of them was badmouthing how stupid the Wii-U was in design philosophy, mainly his complaint was the fact that the tablet controller is only for one person and if anyone wants to play that thing, they are pretty much outta luck (for now)

or, y'know, until you pass the conrtoller

It's pretty cool how Nintendo Land makes it really easy to do so. Asks whether someone else will take the GamePad after each round, and if you say yes, you just have to select the Mii and it quickly reassigns the previous GP player to the Wiimote the new GP player was using. Quick, painless, and encourages letting everyone try both roles.

Did it to me on COD: BO 2 today. Noticed smudges on the disc. Cleaned
it off and it started up. There is a problem though with hard locks.
Hopefully Nintendo is working on a patch.

Either you left it on overnight or something, or you've spent 11 hours in the AC3 menus and such.

Is anywhere renting Wii U games yet? USA or future UK?

My girlfriend is on maternity leave from Blockbuster for a year, and if they are going to be doing Wii U rentals, it'll be awesome to get them whenever free of charge.

I guess I'll phone up later today or something.

I'm renting AC3 from Gamefly. Does that count?

Today I checked out a yodobashi camera here in Japan and they were presold out of their deluxe consoles. Plenty of basics left for preorder though. They had a small Wii U corner with absolutely no one looking at it while I was there (there were a lot of customers in the game section, however). No playable demos, not even a wii u gamepad on display. Just some pamphlets and small pictures here and there. Terrible marketing when the thing launches in less than 2 weeks.

Applied it tonight and it took no more than 60 seconds from start to finish. It looks good so far and you can barely tell it's there. So far it doesn't look like any issues with diminished image quality either. I'm pretty pleased so far, but I've only had it on for about 20 minutes so far.

Yeah pretty much my thinking as well.

For those that are using an HDD via USB, do the games show up as they normally do on the main menu, or is there something different about it? Different icon or an extra HDD menu to go to?

Games show up like a channel just like it does when you download it directly to the system. When you "install" the USB HDD the Wii U does something to it to work seamlessly. It's pretty nice actually.

Awesome. I was hoping for this, but thought they might store them in some sort of sub menu. It's great to know it's seamless. Gotta keep the continuity.

I noticed that my store finally put the WiiU in this weeks folder. Deluxe model for €239, so with employee discount it would be like €192 for the deluxe model for me. Probably the cheapest launch day console I ever bought!

You sell for 110 EUR below the sort of RRP? Where can I order?

Nobody knows - I'm guessing that the European model will come pre-patched, the US release was rushed to hit Black Friday. Chances are the European models when they install the base OS onto them it'll be the updated OS.

Of course that's just my guess.

I doubt we'll get the updated OS from the get-go. The time between the US and EU shipments is not big enough to make this happen.

Just made me wonder - what happens if our own hard drive fails? Do you lose access to the downloaded games forever? It's not Nintendo hardware so they wouldn't cover it. I'm assuming you can't redownload them either. Can we make backups of the drive? I've lost a few drives over the years to failure so it's definitely something that concerns me.

As long as you haven't deleted the profile that downloaded the games, you should be able to redownload the games if need be. You do have a purchase log tied to your account.

Well, apparently some user has already confirmed that Nintendo can allow you to re-download stuff from your account, here.

You'd probably have to ring up customer service and ask them to unlock the possibility of re-downloading them, as the case with SingStar songs in the PS3 whenever your hard disk dies or you migrate your data to another PS3.

Apologies if already posted, but does anyone know if there is a list which states which games I can play on the GamePad without a television?

So my Wii U will be here sometime tomorrow after waiting 11 days on 3 day shipping. Don't have time to go through the entire thread, would anyone mind commenting on how they feel about their purchase so far? I've got Zombi U, Mario, Black Ops 2 and Nintendo Land on the way with it and I'm just hoping that Zombi U or Mario is good at the very least.

I have it since 1 week and no regrets. Miiverse is great, just finished NSBMU this night with a friend and it was a great experience so far. BLOPS2 multiplayer is cocaine and you will like Nintendo Land if you like fun minigames. (Well, they're not ALL fun imo, but most of them are.)

Well, it's happened:

Only being able to get one game is torture.

What's so good about Mario games, anyways?

And exactly how repetitive is Darksiders 2? I enjoyed 1, for the record.

I've asked a lot, GAF, but this is final decision, clutch time. Halp.

Oh wait, shit. I got the pricing wrong. Somehow my brain registered it as €239, the actual price is €326. So with employee discount i'm getting it for €261 total, deluxe model. I made that previous post without having woken up properly, my bad!

It's in this weeks flyer of MediaMarkt in the Netherlands.
