Woah! Movie was really far out there and freaking great. Never knew this was so negatively received in Japan when it was released. I do understand how some hardcore fans might dislike the movie since it's focus is not on Lum and Ataru. For me that wasn't a problem, I do love the original concept of the show and all the wackyness of it, but this was still a great movie. I think this is my favorite Mamoru Oshii film after Patlabor 2: The Movie and Angel's Egg.
Mamoru Oshii made moves in that direction multiple times during his run with the TV show and overall made it its own thing with key additions like Megane, but I guess he didn't push the limits as hard until that movie.

heh heh.

You know, I always wondered how will adapt episode 111 and onwards in the anime. Because in the manga, the narration and direction changes up a bit to another style: slow and even more detailed, the narrator has more presence (as if someone was telling you the tale of what happened) and there is a lyrical tone in his voice, the camera work (well, the equivalent in manga) is more spectacular and cinematographic. I hope they get right next week.
Next episode should be in very slow motion , at last only 8 second of real time.
But you're right this is the key moment on how they will handle this arc. Multiples point of views , a spectator place for the viewer and a lot , lot of information ... It'll be impossible to satisfy everyone.

Those Arpeggio sales...anime is truly dead.
Arpeggio was a great anime. Sure it went out at the same time as when kancolle bloomed, but even without that it's a anime that can stand on his own.

Code Geass Akito 2

As Duckroll said there is an odd conflict here, between a more sober, dry style that the OVAs use (in comparison with the original series) and the more anime~ quirks that still persist. I mean:

codegeass_zpsdcafa279.gif~original

I could swear they increased the breasts size to her just for that scene.
(oh, and talking about her, damn is she stupid, how many times is she going to forgive the 3 terrorists!)
In fact, the first OVA was a bit boring with the new more serious style, except for the action scenes.

in this second OVA the plot doesn't move forward a lot until the last part.
They just are assigned a new suicidal mission, the terrorist japs try to escape but they stay at the end, and in combat we learnt of the new Geass users and the Akito brother appears.
But it ends in a point that it will make the 3rd OVA very interesting, as part of the mystery has been shown and the plot twist, and add that the coming of certain past characters of the series...

edit: oh, and the action scenes are still great. All dat cg...

Sorry what did you just say ? i'm too busy looking at your gif ...

Yup,big win for Arpeggio and Non Non(Arpeggio still showing up in it's second week daily chart so i expect even more)
Machine Doll's 1.4k is only for DVD so i guess with full BD sales data out it will have decent number

Glad to see Arpeggio do well. I came around on the show, it was quite entertaining.

Code Geass Akito 2

I thought its was pretty good, maybe because I already warned before but I don't really see the contrast that duckroll and turin mentioned.
Unlike the original show, Akito is much more quiet and brisk.. and the way the OST dictating scene made the dramatic approach when character doing crazy face and screaming "DIE!" is pretty different.

The plot getting interesting with the backstory revealed and its seem the gang starting to glue together. Also JULIUS KINGSLEY.

And dem CG battle man.. Wow, even the CG background are solid.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 18

Holy shit that was incredible.

Eps 20 are even better. Prepare your WOW.
I could stare at that all day.

Mushi 1-10ish, I don't know anymore:

It's great. My one complaint, and it's so minor that I hate to say it...

Everyone looks the same. I've seen the same kid like three or four times.

Have you reach the episode about the rainbow yet? that was my favorite so far.

Yamato 14

Was this their take on Eva, with the confusing memories viewed by each other and just general wtf is going on here. I have no idea what this episode was about, and am even more puzzled on who Yuki really is and also the girl with a fringe and moe eyes.

So happy to see Arpeggio up there. It was the best surprise this season. Bring on season 2!

Arpeggio... well it wasn't bad, and by all means I watched the whole thing. But I felt so ashamed. It was like the perfect example of why anime is what it is.

Premise that can be seen in a western show + anime trope= anime

In this case it was battleship war show+ moe girls= Arpeggio

I enjoyed it, don't know if I'd want another season.

Where are these western shows about submarines and naval battles?

it wasn't just moe girls , all the mental model struggled to find their identity ... Arpeggio was more than "moe girls"

It was naval battles with great characterisation.

I'd take that every day if i could.

Why wouldn't you? The naval warfare was kept at the front of the show, fanservice kept at a minimum and the pacing was allright.

And the ship porn was decent....could always use more though!

Should've specified "a universal topic for a show such as war" instead of saying western. But my comment stands that some shows are ruined for me for the need of stereotypical anime tropes.

Such as Jormungand. Was the school outfit wearing girl necessary? Sure she's not there the whole show. She was only a part of the problem. The other part being the show got shitty.

I'd rather have great characterization without the need of stuff that irks me. In this case the overly moe character designs. Just like in Yozakura I would have preferred a great show without pantsuuuuuu. I never said it was just moe girls. I was simply oversimplifying the premise.

I preferred the ship porn. I don't know. I feel it would have been a better show without the girls. Would have preferred AI systems in the boats that learned about humanity. More scifi, less kawaii.

edit: by AI systems I mean like computer voices. Or something that looked more mechanical/robot-like.

Moe girls aren't at fault !
Btw i get your point , but this isn't going to change and at least it was done in a way that make sense.

Yamato 2199 - 04
This episode was kinda nice , some character dvellopment for the hero ( maybe he will be able to move on , now ) and for the girl ( forgot her name ) even if they avoided the obvious answer.

I like it ! Big robot is usefull as expected

Does nobody pay attention to those super jet or something , can anybody just walk in and take off with them ? This is the second time this happenned. A little more security Please !

Okay, so I'm trying to get into a Gundam franchise, and I kinda like the opening to G Gundam, so I look up the video with the full version.

And THIS, is the first comment I see.

Some Random Youtube User said:
Are you guys kidding me, Gundam 00 was very good.

G Gundam is top 5 granted but it doesn't hold a candle to Victory Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam Wing and possibly Gundam AGE!

Coming from reading Corvo's reactions, this is hilarious.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own

.

first of all, sterotypes exist in everything ever, if someone pointed out every sterotype in a show made for western audience in 5 shows you watch, you're gonna start noticing them in a ton of shows after the fact, tropes arent a fault by default, infact a story is basically built on tropes which is why tvtropes exist.

2nd I havent seen Jormungand in a while, what girl in a school outfit again? and when did it become shitty?

Gundam Age is horrible. Anyone who doesn't think so hasn't seen much gundam or mecha show in general.
Not to say that it isn't entertaining , but it's flawd beyond repair. One can enjoy it as a defective product but it should only viewed as such .
Lots of ideas, some good but badly executed ( AGE system ), some awefull in a mess of broken characters ( DAT third season captain lol ) that don't have remotely enough time on screen that you can care about them .

At least gundam 00 , despite the numerous story mishaps was more entertaining than this because the cast and the characters had enough time on screen so that you can care about them. ( love them or hate them )

Security is too busy hitting on Niimi to notice such things!

That should make her even more obvious !

Detective Conan 270:
That Haibara monologue towards the end of the episode with the sad music playing in the background was excellent. You can always count on her for some sad and philosophical analysis of the situation, and the impending tragedy. This episode also reinforces a lot of Conan's flaws when it comes to trust; a lot of suffering and narrow escapes later on could have been avoided if he actually told Agasa and Haibara what was up.

The final scene with Akai was also really cool. It will be nice to get to some of the episodes where he actually has more scenes rather than just being shown spying on characters for a few seconds, but it's nice even just to see that. A real sense of impending conflict when you just see him looking sinister at the end of the episode.

What a terrible thing to say. Just further proof that Youtube comments shouldn't be listened to.

Yamato 2199 - 05

WHAT A CLIFFANGER !!

WHAT A NICE TRAP.

I'm legit surprised

I'm only at ep 5 ..there are 361 days left ... Ah Ah this show is good.

People shouldn't joke about Victory Gundam. It is the only anime I have dropped out of pure hatred and certainty in that watching it will actually make me braindead.

I hope Corvo posted his hubba bubba designs in this thread as well. That was the eclipse of Victory Gundam for me. I will always remember episode 32 or whatever it was.

Just finished Yamato 2199. That was fucking amazing, start to finish. Probably my favorite Space Opera ever. I don't know what else to say other than that I'm awfully sad that it's over.

OK, first things first.

1) Wakanim is still a complete mess and something of a shit crayon when it comes to buying things

2) It's DRM Free DTO, so that's nice. But you need to choose between Sub and Dub which is something of an arse. Is MKV not royality free or somein'?

3) Buy the highest stream possible when asked, the 720p encode's a mess.

x. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - The only reason this show isn't very high on my list right now is because I JUST started it. I'll update my post after I finish.

Don't forget!

Yamato 2199 - 06

Wait so the yamato
turned at 180° to launch the missiles ? Man i love flexible ships
The ennemy plan wasn't that bad , but man was he naive .. Basic warfare is to only celebrate after your kill in confirmed.
Pathetic escuse of someone too confident in his superior technology to be cautious.
I mean you can have a machine gun on your hand but still be killed by a well placed arrow. How a commander of a base not knowing that was put in charge just baffle me.Especially after he speech previous episode. No wonder your race surrendered

That was pretty amazing. The mechanical animation was simply phenomenal and the backgrounds including animated backgrounds, (some of which even had depth) were also amazing. I felt I was going to die every time a plane flew over scenery.
Story wise it felt different to a lot of other Miyazaki works focusing more on our middle aged protagonist, an ace turned pig. The female protagonist of sorts that shows up later seems like the typical Miyazaki heroine but that is not really a complaint.
Music was pretty top notch as well as you would expect of Hisaishi.
Direction and pacing wise this felt like one of the best movies Miyazaki's done. Near flawless.

Space Brothers 77:
It turns out attempting ballet moves for the first time of your life while drunk is not a great idea. Who knew? This being Space Brothers, we're able to get an episode which mostly consists of watching people do ballet and have it actually be pretty entertaining. Ivan's advice to Hibito was pretty nice, and I enjoyed watching his home movies of his daughter. It's another little humanizing touch that the show gets so right. We can also see Hibito start to come out of his shell a little and start caring a little bit again.
