Winter Anime 2016 |OT2| Bellariology, Puellology and Simulacrumology

Erased will likely still be my AOTS, but it won't appear on my AOTY top 10 list unless the year shits the bed and I can't find at least 10 shows I like better than this. I was planning in watching it with my friend, but this is True Detective S2 levels of disappointment after an initial couple of solid episodes.

I've just found this-

https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/49r3e8/i_am_anime_director_hiroshi_nishikiori_ask_me/

Anime director Hiroshi Nishikiori (I’m Gonna Be an Angel!, Angelic Layer, Azumanga Daioh, Melody of Oblivion, Jyu-Oh-Sei, Ghost Slayers Ayashi, A Certain Magical Index, Trinity Seven, Milky Holmes TD, The Doraemons: Doki Doki Wildcat Engine, Magic Tree House, and A Certain Magical Index the Movie.) just opened a Reddit AMA.

There are some interesting insights from a rare perspective.

(Before anyone ask, yes Mikoto is his waifu.)

Rakugo 10

Holy crap so that's who Sukeroku was. Pretty sad how he went like that. The closing Shinigami act was BRILLIANT. The camera angles, the panning, the dark frames in the distance. The shot in the distance in pure darkness as he says "this is the solitude I have longed for". What a show man. Easy 10/10 material right here. Can't wait to watch next week after that ending aha

Gate S2 ep.10
Next week just can't come soon enough, I'm sick of the political bullshit, it's time for a grand ass-kicking like the first couple episides of the season.

It's good to see Obi Wan Nozomi is still pulling the strings behind the scenes.

So you wanna be an idol, kid?
well, whoop de doo!
I have been around the block before with blockheads just like you

So much for excuses

My answer is two words!
O.K.

Does Rakugo have an OT thread?

If not, we probably should have made one.

It would have died long before now, unfortunately. There's little point in making an OT unless there's a built-in hook that'll catch the attention of a broad spectrum of anime fans, such as being an adaptation of a popular manga. We just need to make sure we campaign hard for Rakugo Shinjuu come AOTY voting time; that's the best opportunity to make people who don't come in here aware of the best work of the past year.

Unlike with Ping Pong which had the added bonus of the weird art style and the amazing stylistic scenes for the show, I don't think you'll have as many people checking out Rakugo as Ping Pong.

Hunter X Hunter (1999) 36

The tease at the end makes me tempted to skip Heaven's Arena and go straight to Yorknew, since apparently that's where the really good stuff is, but I'll watch it all like a good boy.

Well the best animated fight of the 1999 version came during Heaven's Arena, so you definitely want to watch that. It has some really great moments overall, even if York Shin is better as far as the overall plot goes.

Maturity, bitches.
Well since the general impressions from those watching Rakugo have been almost always positive I'll add it to my list of shows to recommend in the next seasonal OP.

So that's two shows on the list. Now to observe for two more.

Ping Pong has a more unconventional style, directly translating Matsumoto's art to screen, but Rakugo Shinjuu is just as stylishly directed. The bigger barrier is that ping pong is a familiar sport worldwide whereas rakugo is specifically Japanese. As we've seen, it can be hard for people to get over the initial cultural hump to get to the point where they can appreciate the rich character drama going on.

Well i can't disagree with that considering that I lost interest because I couldn't get past the cultural hump to care about a show entirely dedicated to this form of entertainment I've never heard of or care to know about.

Maybe one day I'll give it another shot.

Is that Gon vs Hisoka? I've seen excerpts of that.

So far the best animation in the series has been Gon vs Hanzo in the final phase of the Hunter Exam. That was really incredible.

Yeah, that's the one. It really blew me away back when I first watched the series.

And now I just realized that was like 13 years ago...

I'll definitely dive into Rakugo once the season ends. Same with Erased and Ajin. I don't know much about them, but the little I do gives me the impression that they'd be good ones to binge-watch.

Some OTs work and some don't and yeah, the show much catch a larger interest from more casual viewers. The show OTs are a good way to connect with the larger anime fanbase on GAF that are scared to, refuse to or rarely will come into the anime community thread.

As reference, look at the participants in the Erased thread and cross-reference those posters with the anime thread. There are a lot of unique posters in there that just want a neutral place to discuss an interesting show.

There are also a ton of shows this spring that could be really good OTs, which is why we already have like 5 planed and hopefully they all get traction.

Erased, Rakugo, Konosuba and ???

Ugh... Is it starting to drag?

Little bit. There has been way too much political/ bad prince crap. The next episode should put things back into form... hopefully. Time for that almighty Japanese special forces to jump in and make a mess of the dirty Prince and his bullshit ways. I really hope his stupid bitch sidekick catches it too, since she is essentially pulling the strings from the background.

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu 10

It's fascinating seeing Kiku developing into the man we see him as in the first episode. A lot of callbacks to that - someone asking Kiku to take him as an apprentice, Kiku performing the Shinigami story, and most significantly the name of Sukeroku haunting earlier generations as it comes to haunt Kiku. Knowing the endpoint of the story upfront creates an ever greater impact as we draw closer and closer to the tragic denouement.

She and Her Cat -Everything Flows- 2

Another sweet episode. The cat's perspective is well utilized; we as viewers can see what's going on with the girl that the cat cannot.

Gundam Front Tokyo to Show New Gundam UC Short

The Gundam Front Tokyo entertainment venue will update its giant Wall-G video presentation on March 26 with a new "Mobile Suit Gundam UC: A Phantom World" short. The Wall-G setup projects videos onto the Diver City Tokyo shopping complex's outer wall, where it becomes an animated backdrop to the life-size Gundam statue. (The actual Gundam Front Tokyo venue is on the seventh floor of Diver City Tokyo.)

SMH putting Kyoani fanservice LN dreck into Gundam. How low can you go Sunrise?!?

Majin Bone - 47

Man, that scene with Liebert and Shougo's mother was great.

This entire show is great. I'm gonna be sad when I finish this soon. :(

I've got a feeling that Stolz isn't dead. Like, it makes sense plot-wise for him to be dead after episode 46 and seeing his body during Revolt's speech is certainly convincing, but still. I have a feeling something else is at work here.

Holy shit. We had multiple people watch E7? Did they watch the movie? AO? I didn't see those impressions.

She and Her Cat has been all that I hoped it would be, so far. Slice of LIfe in short form is particularly powerful in that it gradually reveals more and more of the characters - like any SoL - but it's such a small piece of them that I can barely stand waiting a week for each new episode.

I have a love-hate relationship with both Gate and Heavy Object (incoming rant, sorry).

In Heavy Object they keep reminding you that Objects are the one element that changed war but at the same time they show in every fucking arc why big ass land-battleships are a stupid idea when faced with a bit of reality. Now that's the good part of the show, what annoys me is the whole "mens are horny so they must be punished", pls bitch this guy is winning your war for you, make a goddamn parade for him. Also Ohoho's real form was a complete disappointment, goddamn lolis!

Regarding Gate, I'm just tired of Itami and his harem. I just want more civilization clash and maybe involvement of other countries so the JSDF has real challenges. Also Itami was just told a few episodes ago that the Gate will close at certain time but apparently that's not critical to say to the japanese soldiers that would be trapped in other world and all the people trying to start an economy based on the Gate's world resources.

Please don't respond to me with manga spoilers, even if you hide them I can infer what you want to say if you quote part of my rant, thanks.

GATE - 22

Dear god, how long does it take to deploy the troops? I was sure that they deployed them at the end of the last episode, so color me surprised that they spend the entire episode waiting to get deployed. At least we got some more time with Itami and the gang. Liked the whole assassination arc, until Itami turned his brain off and somehow decided that there can be only one assassin and to not keep an eye on the one idiot girl who's been gone for 4 days with no explanation finding the person who is known to turn idiots over to his side. Good thing she magically didn't go for the neck, or Lelei would be dead. Glad the gangs heading back to the capital next episode. Hope they put a bullet in both the Prince's and his bunny's heads.

Also, that Pina scene was hard to watch. Not sure if the animation team was sexualizing the whole thing or not.

Holy shit. We had multiple people watch E7? Did they watch the movie? AO? I didn't see those impressions.

No. Multiple people also advised them to avoid both the movie and sequel series at all cost.

I post whenever I watch new episodes, and am at #10 so far. I'm glad I put Cross Ange away and got to watch some quality show with mechas rather than... whatever Cross Ange's supposed to be.

I also like the 80s vibe of the OP and the whole surfboard thing. The invisible waves make no sense to me so far and appear to bend to acomodate the plot, but having radical surfing robot combat is kind of nice.

Still, god bless 2D mecha anime. I get that 3D models work for cutting corners since you can just model them once (except for specific shots which might require distorted models, like that JoJo part 2 OP one) and pose them around for cheap, but it's like even the animations and battle coreographies are done on a relly low budget, which results in far too many fights between bad-looking robots that are animated in boring and bad-looking ways. A real shame, IMO.

Orange does excellent CG mecha work. Take a look at the fights they animate in Akito the Exiled, Fafner Exodus, Comet Lucifer, Majestic Prince, and the like. It's good stuff.

Speaking of mecha, is Heavy Object any good? I know it's written by the Raildex guy, so I know at least the world building should be good, but how's the plot, writing, and characters?

Guess I'll check some more mecha shows sometime after I've finished E7, so I'll keep those in mind.

Trust me, you don't want to watch Comet Lucifer. The CG mecha was good, but it's another one of those "we really needed 24 episodes for this storyline to function properly but we only had 12 to work with so we had to rush things" sort of shows a la Charlotte.

Majestic Prince had some really good fight scenes in it and the suits were cool. Too bad it's irredeemable trash much like Valvrave.

Excellent characters, Qwenthur and Havia are really refreshing. Their commander is pretty great too.

Writing is pretty awesome for the plot. It feels nice just not having epic guy piloting powerful mecha for once.

ALLOFF is a great music group, please watch.

WataMote give me a very mix feeling when watching it. In one way, I did chuckle as I watch Tomoko fail in almost everything or in a situation which show her in a very awkward position (see: Tomoko's Dad scene when he saw her with the sex machine as she was asleep, not realize she didn't use it for dirty thing). On the other hand, it's very depressing and very uncomfortable to watch her fail so many time to the point you kinda feel pity for her (almost…).

WataMote is a slice of life, comedy (a bit on the uncomfortable side), and school life. You follow a main female character name Tomoko who is in her 1st year of high school and (basically the entire plot of the whole show) simply wish she is well liked by her peers and look attractive to the opposite sex. In a way, this is what we all went through when we go to school for the 1st time and want to have friends to talk to and be liked by other peers in the class. For Tomoko, this is a struggle she have to face every day of her life in the high school and this is mostly cause of her personality. She is a very lonely girl and very socially inept to the point she need help by asking her younger brother to teach her to talk to guys (even though her brother doesn't care about her issue).

In some ways, you can say the problems she have in life is cause by her personality of what she thinks of other people (aka: very negatively). You see this quite a bit when you listen to her thinking of what she thinks of her classmate when she overheard them talking. It's kinda sad how she thinks that way to other people as if she just talk to push that aside and maybe talk to them, she might able to break away from her issue. Also, she try too hard to be somebody else when she isn't but you can see why as she didn't have some sort of a resembling of normal life sine she was a small kid. This explain why she is always angry of herself and her lifestyle.

Even when Tomoko have a chance to change her life for the better, she squanders all of it which leave us a hopelessness feeling. As a audience, you wonder what is the point for her to keep doing this as they isn't any payoff for her and for us. In the end, she basically tell the audience it doesn't matter anymore if she isn't liked by her peers. Which kinda me feel like they is no point of the entire show.

I guess the humor of this show is come down to laugh at somebody depressing situation and feel happy that our lives is not as bad as Tomoko. I can see that side of the show and did laugh at certain scene joke like the watching porn but put the wrong plug when listen it in the computer or when asking the famous actor to say something that is very weird and nasty. Even with this, you start to realize it isn't too funny as it droves into teenagers lifestyle and how they have to go though this issue like we all did when we're in high school. The final episode show this a bit more detail when Tomoko want to know what her classmate are saying about her and then found out no one say one thing of her which make her feel like she is been exclude. Hell, certain scene in the show make me feel uncomfortable as it remind me a bit of my past to the point I have to stop watching the show for a bit and do other stuff.

In a way, I will give this show a credit as it didn't try to make high school lifestyle look nice but instead portray the reality of high school. You seldom see this side of it too much in animated which make sense as fans want to get away in the real world of issue and into a fantasy world when watching animated show. Even with this positive, this is a very depressing show to watch as we basically see Tomoko trying desperately to cling what hope she have of one day she can have some sort of a normal life with some happiness. Unfortunately, as an audience, we know this won't ever happened for her and this is why it's a sad and depressing show to watch.

Man I've been on a break from watching anime for awhile. Hopefully I'll get back to it sometime. It really sucks when you start losing the motivation to watch more.

Oh well I've been wasting my time watching some Donnie Yen movies. Fuck, is IP Man so good.

As has been said, Orange handles 3D mecha pretty damn well. And even if the best CG animation isn't as good as the best 2D, a low budgeted 2D is just as bad as a low budgeted CG. Part of the reason the original Fafner was a pain to get through was precisely because the mecha were animated so poorly.

Majestic Prince had some really good fight scenes in it and the suits were cool. Too bad it's irredeemable trash much like Valvrave.

MJP was leagues better than Valvrave, how can you even compare them?
