Gad Gaurd Finished
A pretty unusual mecha(though it has more in common with medabots) show in a lot of ways. I enjoyed it despite it having some flaws. It's somewhat hamstrung by its episodic format in that while some episodes are incredible, other are just kind going through the motions. And then when it tries to tie in an overall plot its not too convincing in its execution.
Pros
-Stellar OST. I think even the staff knew this was their best asset and they really push it to the forefront.
-Non tropey characters and locations. Every character has a really fun, unique design and they're not just standard mecha kids who whine about everything, they all realize how genuinely awesome it would be to have a mech. Their disguises are great, kind of a mix between phantom theives and superhero costumes. And it's set in a faux-european urban setting gives the show a unique feel.
-Great exploration of its main theme-parent/child relationship. Whether its Hajiki standing in for the role of the dad who left him, Katana assuming his own parental responsibilities or Takumi using his parents as an example of everything he doesn't want to be.
-The world feels alive(terrible phrase). Like every character has an arc, even side-characters gradually progress throughout the story. It makes everything feel connected and that the main characters don't live in an isolated world from everything around them.
-Cool bulky aschetic for the mechs. Great twist towards the end that ties them into the shows themes too.
-The show manages to subtly balance two romantic sub-plots that...only get slightly annoying towards the end.
-And as i said when an episode hits the right notes the show is incredible. There's a strech of episodes between 10-16 that are all superb and they range from hesit stories, to Tarantino like narratives and more light hearted romps. Especially great are Katana's backstory or episode 3 that has one of the best mech fights ive seen where the pilots and mech are both fighting simultaneously.
Cons
-The episodic structure. When they try to ramp up the main plot it falls flat at times due to really weird pacing, killing any momentum the plot tries to build. And some episodes are a lot weaker than others
-The ending thematically makes sense but general sense plotwise is batshit insane.
-Two character arcs are cut really abruptly.
-Don't use the setting enough. Like they build up a lot of grime, crime syndicates, the underworld and the class divides in the city but don't really utilize those aspects that much.
-Not much of a con but the animation is usually good but never great. It's very consistent and a few episodes have some nice stylistic choices but in general it never really pushes the boat out.
So there I don't think ive ever wrote as much for a show I just kind of like. It's still an easy 7/10 for me and I would recommend it. I think its because there is such a clear distinction between the show's stronger aspects and its weaker ones that im so critical of it.
