There are very few things that I would say are bad just as ideas, but more FLCL is actually not something that I want to see. Ever.

Even if this new, er, show turns out to be decent, it's still fundamentally a dumb idea.

When thinking of shows that needed a second season, FLCL certainly didn't come to mind. The ending was fine, but I wouldn't mind more.

Maturity, bitches.
I guess America ran out of their own properties to rehash and has decided to look abroad with their barrel scraper.

These seasons shouldn't happen.

It's 12 episodes, so like the original 6 episode "season"

Super conflicted on this...I love FLCL but didn't ever think it needed more episodes. Like how do you even live up to FLCL a decade later? On the list of things that don't need a continuation, FLCL is pretty fucking high up there.

Unless they make it some kind of Gunbuster -> Diebuster thing or an Anthology series but is this really a good idea?

I'm sorry, what?

I should probably watch this show.

The only way this won't retroactively cheapen the original is if its set YEARS later, using different metaphors and analogies to showcase or its a different set of characters in the same universe.

Think about it though...even if they somehow managed to pull a miracle and get the original team, The Pillows and all that stuff together for a S2 and S3, you know what would be better?

That team working on something new or literally anything else besides more FLCL.

I can't really think of an anime more defined in its existence as a singular thing made by one group in this one year then FLCL.

Experience tells me that you should be careful about what you wish for and keep expectations low.

People were wishing for this?

I think the best outcome possible is it to have little to nothing to do with the original FLCL. Trying to redo that or riding out that creative vision would be gross.

Best case scenario would be a Diebuster equivalent, but I don't know how they could pull that off.

I imagine there have been people asking for "more shows like FLCL" or something along those lines.

Personally, I don't know how I would begin to make a rigorous ranking of all the anime I haven't seen. (I'd have a hard enough time doing it for the anime I have!) So when I decide to watch something, I don't really ask myself "Is this better than everything else I could be watching?" Once you ask that, you open yourself up to wondering if this anime show is better than all the other forms of entertainment you could be partaking in, or if watching a TV show at all is a better use of your time than every other possible activity, and there's no end to questions like those. So I just watch whatever looks good and interesting at the moment, and as long as I'm not feeling I'm wasting my time, I'm happy.

Well, that's certainly a problem I'm encountering fairly often these days. I don't relish the choices that people with even less free time than myself have to make.

I'm pretty sure a continuation was basically confirmed when IG scooped up the rights from Gainax. It might even have been mentioned when that news popped.

edit: yup, although new seasons weren't mentioned, but a remake was

Production I.G has announced acquisition of original rights to FLCL, the 2000-2001 wild coming of age OVA from the company, Gainax and King Records. The August 28th announcement notes the six-episode series' international popularity and the exposure from its dubbed broadcast, before indicating I.G's plans to take advantage of the acquired rights, with the possibility of a remake mentioned.

That's from the CR article, but the ANN one mentions other ventures.

Adult Swim should actually revive a property from the times when anime was good, the 60s.

It worked for Osomatsu-san so clearly the demand is there.

If it's terrible, I'll just look at it like most Evangelion fans look at the rebuild movies.

Like a dumb spin off that can be safely ignored.

Optimistically i guess it can never damage the original so fuck whatever bring it on. Hopefully adult swim jumps on for more Big O too.

And Cowboy Bebop series 3!

12 episodes of Spike lying on a set of steps.

A show that actually did allow for more was Outlaw Star. The ending literally said they'd continue having adventures even if this particular story has ended.

Or maybe really do something surprising and make something original!

FLCL is my favorite anime. Like, ever. Of all time. I got every single fucking 30 dollar DVD with two episodes on it the day of release. I got the absurdly priced blu-ray day of release. I own 3 FLCL shirts. I have a FLCL hat I've worn for 13 years. I bought the manga. I commissioned artwork from people at anime conventions for it.

WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS

WHAT GOOD COULD POSSIBLY COME FROM THIS

WHY DO YOU WANT TO DESTROY ME

Hey!

Seems good to me and I'd argue most Western Anime fans. More shows like GitS: SAC, Big O, Space Dandy, etc.? Yes please <3

Looks like you got your wish, Crocodile!

And Cowboy Bebop series 3!

12 episodes of Spike lying on a set of steps.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Toonami folks were begging Watanabe at this very moment to do a Cowboy Bebop sequel.

I am so excited for another original Enokido script.

At this point there's no indication any of the original FLCL staff will return for this.

When you're right you're right.

I rescind Big O because it ended fine and this is a better idea.

Judging from the reactions, these new FLCL seasons are going to be another Madoka Rebellion/Eureka Seven AO aren't they?

The kind of sequels that destroy peoples' memories of the original and stomps all over what they loved about the original series.

Tsurumaki has a very distinctive directing style and Imaishi put in a lot of work. I can't see this turning out well unless everybody decides to leave their respective studio to work on this.

Ashita no Joe 1

Osamu Dezaki has the magic touch. Most TV anime this old (Ashita no Joe aired in 1970) are so dull and dated in their approach that I can't stand to watch them. This, however, is compelling viewing. The introduction to this rough world, steeped in poverty and violence, and a homeless drunk who seizes on a penniless drifter as a hope for vicarious boxing glory - it's really well done. The scratchy art and raw animation has a lot of character that sets the appropriate emotional tone for the story.

The art gets really extreme.

And here I am, having completely no idea what FLCL is, but it seems a pretty big deal. And the first anime is only 6 episodes, cool.

To work it HAS to not follow Naota or have anything to do with him.

Follow new characters, hell, you could probably still use Haruka as long as she was not interacting with any old characters.

Just please for the love of god don't have her show up back in Naota's life. For everything that is holy.

I'm so annoyed that this made me miss the teaser site opening for Danganronpa 3, revealing the students.

The students look pretty boss. Wish I was able to interact with them instead of watching an anime about them.

Press Release from Turner

Popular Anime Series To Premiere on Network’s Toonami Block

Cue Anime Fans Worldwide Going Insane

Adult Swim, a division of Turner, is proud to announce an official sequel to one of the most beloved anime series of all time - FLCL (pronounced Fooly Cooly). Created in 2000, FLCL told the tale of Naota, a 12-year-old boy who met a woman that would forever change his life…whether he liked it or not. 16 years later, Adult Swim and legendary animation studio, Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell), are creating two new six-episode seasons to continue the tale, which will premiere in Adult Swim’s Toonami block. Known for its surprising and unique content with high fan engagement, Adult Swim has been basic cable’s #1 Network in the U.S. with 18-24 and 18-34 year olds for eleven consecutive years. The new season of FLCL adds to Adult Swim’s ever expanding portfolio of original programming.

“The original FLCL is an anime classic and has been a fixture on Adult Swim since we first laid eyes on it,” said Jason DeMarco, senior vice president/creative director, Adult Swim On-Air. “I’m beyond thrilled to be able to produce a sequel with the original creators, for Toonami, where it belongs.”

Back for the new season is FLCL series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki, serving as supervisor with director Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass) and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion). Also joining this season is writer Hideto Iwai (Last Dinner).

Established in 1987, Production I.G has since produced a number of acclaimed feature films and TV shows, and has also partnered with Mamoru Oshii on every one of his animated films since Patlabor: The Movie (1989), thereby earning an international admiration which eventually led to the visionary collaboration with Quentin Tarantino for the animation sequence in his hit, Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003). They are most known for the Ghost in the Shell franchise, and for the acclaimed animated TV series Psycho-pass and Attack on Titan.

“FLCL has become an anime classic over the years, yet it has remained vibrant,” said Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, co-founder, president and CEO of Production I.G. “This new season will capture the hearts of both longtime FLCL fans from around the world and new anime viewers.”

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

But why did Haruko return to Earth?
What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota?
And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?

All of these questions and more will be answered in the new season of the series, which is set to premiere in late 2017/early 2018 on Adult Swim.
